Can submarine go through a contested seazone?
-
Hey everyone
Suppose 3 connected seazones, let’s name them A - B - C. The only way to go from A to C is through B. And inversely, the only way to go from C to A is through B.
Suppose the American has its navy in A and Japan has its navy in C. Japan blocked seazon B with a ship (not a destroyer, so it doesn’t block sub).
Are you allowed to move subs from A to attack C IN THE SAME TURN you are attacking B? I’m guessing no but needed confirmation

In the Combat Move section of the Europe rulebook there is a picture example similar to what you’re asking on page 14. Here’s the caption:
“Sea Movement Example: Sea units other than submarines must end their movement when they enter a hostile sea zone. The destroyer must stop in this zone. However, the submarine can pass through safely because the enemy unit isn’t a destroyer.”Although in the example the sub isn’t attacking anything in the destination sea zone, it is still moving through a sea zone in which a combat is going to occur. (perhaps because it is moving to escape a combat due to starting in a hostile sea zone, in which case it would be moving during the combat move phase although not attacking anything)
Long story short: According to the example, yes, you can move subs through B to get to C, even though B will also be attacked, as long as no destroyer is present in B.
For future reference there’s actually a pinned thread for these kinds of questions. The rule deputies usually answer them pretty quickly.

Yes you can move your subs through SZ B to attack the US fleet in SZ A. As you already said there is no destroyer there so there is nothing to stop the sub from treating the Hostile Sea Zone as a Friendly Sea Zone and moving through it; even if you are also attacking SZ B. While Combat is considered simultaneous Combat Movement is not. So even though you are attacking SZ B until the Combat Phase actually occurs SZ B is not a hostile sea zone as far as the sub is concerned.

Thank you for the clarifications!

While Combat is considered simultaneous Combat Movement is not.
While you answered the scenario correctly, only the quoted sentence is not correct.
Page 12 Pacific 1940.2 rulebook says: “All combat movement is considered to take place at the same time.”
Here the submarines move from seazone A to C at the same time as the rest of the fleet moves from seazone A to B. -

Here the submarines move from seazone A to C at the same time as the rest of the fleet moves from seazone A to B.Than you Panther for pointing that out. Then perhaps I have been misusing a scenario. I will open a new thread not to hijack this one.
