Here is an interesting bit of historical trivia. The US 8th Air Force actually had bases in the Ukraine for a short time. From June to September 1944, the 8th Air Force started a shuttle run of bombers that would take off from England and Italy, bomb targets in Germany then fly on to 3 bases in the Ukraine, Piryatin, Mirgorod and Poltava. The reasoning was mainly to show solidarity with the Russians and to hit Germany from an unexpected quarter.
The mission was called “Operation Frantic”. I don’t think it was much of a success. One reason is that the Luftwaffe bomber arm was still fairly strong in the East. Some Luftwaffe planes saw the American bombers heading into Russia. Then when a shot up P-51 crashed in Poland, it had documents on the Russian bases. Luftwaffe command was notified and they send Fliegerkorps IV, nearly 350 He 111s, to pound those bases while the B-17s were lined up in neat rows due to lack of space. It was the 8th Air Force’s costliest single operation of the war.
I didn’t even know about this until I read it in World War II magazine.
Strategic Bombing Runs Rule
-
On strategic bombing runs I’ve decided to play with the rule that if the bomber or bombers score a hit, that Industrial Complex is destroyed and removed from the board and that country must pay 15 I.P.C.'s to buy a new one. Does anyone have an opinion on this?
-
sounds pretty vicious. perhaps if it was only like on a 6? or perhaps it gets destroyed, and they can’t build anything there until the next turn when it gets replaced.
-
Good idea.
-
I dunno… the ability to blow up IC’s would make Bombers insanely powerful. Plus it raises all sorts of issues, like if you build back the IC, is it still unlimited production or not?
If you want to make SBRs stronger, you can try something like this: after rolling the die to determine IPCs lost, you roll the die one additional time. If on that time you score a 6, the IPC value of that territory permanently drops by 1.

I don’t much like this either; I know some people who are very skilled @ rolling sixes. I would try something like if you roll a certain number, you get to roll again for damage.

Hahaha, like my Sister! :o

Yeah, I read about that somewhere. If she was my sister, I probably would have disowned her or something. :)
-
believe me, that hasn’t stopped me from trying.
-
I have no idea how the conversation went from strategic bombing to TG’s sister, but I still think it is realistic for industrial complexes to be destroyed, because if you drop a bomb on them that’s usually what happens. When and if the person builds back that IC we just say that it’s unlimited production again.
-
Why not let bombers roll 2 dice when deciding their damage when doing strategic bombing runs?
-
i like waraxis’ idea. but make one die for lost IPC’s and if the other die roll gets you over 10 or some number, the complex is lost until nest turn. then it can be rebuilt

The whole glorious online sibling rivalry right here.
As far as strat bombing, rolling two dice makes them too close to HBRs, IMO. Maybe if the rule could be for HBRs and if they score 15 or more damage, you can destroy the factory instead of paying for it.

Histerically funny :D .

I hope you aren’t having a good laugh on account of my britterness and mockery :x
Anyways, TM’s Strategic Bomber advocacy is legendary. She devoted entire threads on her theories (that’s right, leave it to her to actually come up with “Theories” on such a straightforward game! :o) on Strategic Bombing, Active Time Battle, and Varable Active Time Battle. She’s just strange… :-?

No, never!

What are Active Time Battle and Varable Active Time Battle? :-?

There’s more, but that’s it for now.

I looked, and I have to say, I agree with you on bombers vs. arm/inf.
Personally, I would never trust my luck to allout SBR strategy like that, but knowing my friends, I can generally tell who has good luck and who has bad, so some of them might pull it off. As far as the ATB, that’s confusing. Is it simply playing A&A in real time, or what? -
Interesting.
