Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

That looks like a really cool list.
So you’re going with the Sherman for one of the tank sculpts?  I was kind of hoping for the Stuart.  However, I bet your Shermans will have a lot more detail on them.

FHF Hellcat figher?  That’s a surprise.  I would have sworn you would be going with the P-51 Mustang or F4 Corsair.

Here’s an idea for your artillery.  How about the 155mm Long Tom?  That would be a cool piece.

    Can’t wait to see them.

  • Awesome list FMG, thanks for the update!  I cannot wait until I can get my hands on this set.  For the Sherman, do you have a model in mind?  May I suggest the M4A3?  For the artillery I would suggest the M2-A1 105mm Howitzer.  I like the Hellcat, but what happened to the idea of the US having 2 fighters?  If that idea got nixed and you are going with only 1 fighter, I think a European theater fighter such as the P-51 or P-47 would be better suited seeing as the P-38 and Dauntless from WOTC and the TBM Avenger from your set were all primarily used in the Pacific.  Finally, I think your missing an opportunity with the transport.  WOTC has a liberty ship and although I know yours will have more detail and look better, I think an LCM-3 would be a welcome addition to anyone’s collection.  Just ideas though, no complaints here!  Thanks for posting the info, let us know when you have pictures!

Sounds like a great list, but if its not too late I’d like to once again lobby for the P-51 D mustang; (and contrary to popular belief mustangs were assigned in both european and pacific theaters.)  In any case, thanks for the update. Keep up the excellent work FMG.

  • coach is doing the F4 Corsair. but i would like to second the p51 mustang if it isnt to late

  • Let’s get a Euro centric fighter - another vote for the P-51

If FMG doesn’t make the P51D then let’s lobby Coach to make a supplement set fir US and make sure it has the Mustang!

Are you sure the P-51 was assigned to the Pacific?  I know the P-40 (flying tigers) was but I thought the P-51 was used exclusively in Europe.

P51s were the only ones with the range to escort B-29s raids from Tinian to Japan. That is one of the reasons we took Iwo Jima, to have a Mustang base.

Mustangs also fought for the US in combat over Burma and the Philippines. The Australian, New Zealand, and Chinese Air forces also used the P51 in the Pacific theater during the later stages of the war.

Contemporary plans had assigned the P-51 as well as the P-47 as the primary fighters to be used the invasion of Japan, should the bombings prove to be unsuccessful in forcing a Japanese surrender.

On a side note: The P-51 was the second most produced US fighter during WWII; lagging behind the P-47 by a mer 89 units.

  • Thanks for the update FMG. Totally pyched about these pieces. Can’t wait to replace the ones I got with yours.

  • Razor and Bob thanks for the compliment by the way. If any country needs the 2 infantry it is Britain for the reason I suggested. Cheers

  • Hi

What will be used for US. MECH INF UNIT? Maybe a standard army jeep? A Ford GP or Willy MA / MB?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willys_MB

  • Mech Infantry should be the M3A1 halftrack

  • i like IL’s ideas for this one, the different battle would make people who are trying to add this to OOB pieces happy also

  • Yea wherever possible the choices should be different from OOB, so that you can use both. If both sides have a Sherman tank, you don’t get an early war or late war unit model so you have less flexibility in making a D12 system or unique national unit values.

For example the OOB bomber could be a heavy bomber and the b24 an early war bomber or medium bomber. Indirectly you created a greater use for the pieces.

The mustang p-51 is a perfect long range fighter.  Im just looking at the utility of choosing sculpts that both compliment the OOB and also are not copies of them. This makes them more unique and at the same time more interesting since they are somewhat different.

    Agreed!

  • I’m a little surprised by the Hellcat, too!  I mean, it was a great fighter and all, but it IS what we have oob and wasn’t made in nearly the numbers of the P-47 or P-51… From a utility angle, though, I suppose it’s all good, since we could use the oob P-38’s as long-range fighters.

I’m OK with FMG doing the Iowa class, as long as it’s slightly bigger than oob; we could then use the oob ones as “North Carolina” or “South Dakota” class which were fairly similar but smaller.

I find it a little odd that FMG is referring to the “Enterprise class” and that IL counters with a preference for the “Hornet class,” as both carriers were from the same class and that it was called the “Yorktown class”!  I would go for the Essex class if you really want something to distinguish it from oob: the oob “Wasp class” was really just a slightly smaller one-off revision of the Yorktown class that looks identical except for being slightly shorter to get the tonnage limits under treaty restrictions.

Wasn’t the Hellcat only available in the Anniversary Edition OOB?  I’m not positive but my copy of 1942 and my older copy of revised came with the P38 lightning, and I swear the copy of 1940 I saw was also the P38.

  • The Hellcat came in Guadalcanal and Anniversary.  1940 games come with the P38 and the Dauntless SBD.  I agree 100% on the carriers Dr. Larsen.
