Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

This was the initial wish list going into the project.  It will be almost the same with a few additions and subtractions.

The BUNKERS and TASK FORCE MARKERS will be in the “extras” set that will include ICs / Naval Bases / Air Bases etc etc

We have added Tac Bombers and Transport Planes.

As stated in that old list (Which was done on a study of what is needed for AA50) the sets will include more then enough for each nation.  Individual unit qty will vary from Nation to Nation as each is a separate Sprite.  For instance, we may include more Russian Land units than Naval Units in the USSR set etc…

The cost is being determined now as the final touches are put on ITALY.

    PRODUCTION INSIGHT

Each individual sculpt cost us $200 each!  That does not include the cost of Models, Historical research time and shipping of samples back and forth to the sculptor.

Each Nation Mould for injection will cost about $3000

Final production cost / Freight costs / Packaging costs are still being determined and negotiated.

We will make it as affordable as possible, maintaining a margin that will fund the next set.  Once I get to release the final pictures of the set you will all agree I think that they will be worth the time/money and wait we have all endured.

  • Whatever the price i will buy the standard 6 sets.

For Italy the key is to get it out before AAE40 because Italy will have no dedicated pieces except the infantry… what a joke.

Then Germany will carry the funds for the rest. Thats the one everybody wants the most.

So plastic AB and NB are going to be available? I’m sold. Completely and utterly sold.

What’s the current plan for representing them? Just tiles with icons? Or maybe a miniature aircraft control tower/wharf type thing?

whew - for a moment I thought you meant $3K to make each individual set! Any chance of telling us how much it costs you to get one manufactured, once the moulds are all arranged (just for curiosity’s sake).

  • No tiles! Control Tower/Wharf, would be great!

  • when can we pre-order?

And when will the french and ANZAC combat dice be coming out?

    I cant wait.

  • '10

Of course we are not going to use tiles!  Real units only!  For all Pieces.

  • Glad to hear read it! :-D Of course, even plastic tiles would be 10X better than the thin cardboard ones WotC gave us

  • I eagerly await this, but I hope its a little cheaper than what IL is suggesting. If I could get all the pieces together for around $100 that’s doable, but I couldn’t justify spending $50 on each individual nation’s set.

fifty dollars a set I can buy hole new games with the money I put into six of these sets

Then don’t buy it, you saw how much their production costs are.

Price is beyond our control.  This is a community project and it will live or die based on community support.

    You asked… we will deliver.

As mentioned above, with the mold cost + each individual sculpt x # of sculpts, I’d guesstimate somewhere in the range of $8000 per nation

To sell cheap enough to get a full set at around $100 (even $15 a set would be $120, and I don’t imagine it will be that low) would require a huge amount of faith in MASSIVE future sales (we’re talking in the range of 500+ of each and every set).  For a project like this, do we believe that more than 500 people will purchase?  I don’t know ……

  • the basic set has 13 or so molds $3,000 x13. Then you got to add $200 x 13. Now you got how much each will cost. Then add the extras which would be the same group of perhaps 6 more molds ( $3,000 x 6 and $200 x 6) now you go a true figure

$41,600 for basic divided by $50… they need to sell 832 of these at $50 just to get back the money

Now add the other $19,200 divided by $50 , means 384 additional sets between the other nations just to recapture the investment.

So they need like to sell 1500 of these to make a profit.

But in the long term it will be a great product. All game companies will come to FMG and sign deals to publish games using their pieces. Just like that Napoleon and the Lion game , which uses Viktory II pieces and now other games are coming out in this series. Morrison games which did not sell alot of games, is now really doing well by selling the pieces as standard Napoleonic game parts.

The bottom line is for Jeremy to finish the line and build a platform of being a supplier of these game pieces to many companies to produce new AA style games. Even perhaps going to WOTC and having them buy up the pieces for future AA games.

An official AA game with these pieces could you imagine that. I might buy the pieces I will just need to save up cash.

I think you’ve got your numbers way off there IL.  I’m reading that you’re calculating a “basic set” as one nation (at least that’s my understanding of what you’re saying) coming out to some $41,000+.

Each nation will have it’s own mold.  One mold = $3000.  Add to that $200 per sculpt with 13-14 sculpts per nation (give or take) means $200 x 14 = $2800, plus the cost of the models, shipping, research etc.

This makes each nations individual mold approximately $5800 + extras (models, shipping back and forth, research, incidentals), which is why I figured $8000 per nation as a rough guestimate.  I’m thinking it may be a bit less but of course, I don’t know for sure.

    $8000 x 8 nations (for AA40Global) = $64000
    $8000 x 1 ‘extras’ mold = $8000
$8000 x 2 for neutrals (assuming 2 different sets of neutral sculpts not relying on any other existing sculpts) = $16,000

Total for a “full” set of 8 nations, 2 sets of neutrals and all extra pieces = $88,000

Then there’s the cost of doing the molding itself.

The big question I think that needs to be asked is “how many full sets will be sold” over a fair time frame?  That’s got to be the biggest question FMG has to figure out before a final price can be determined.

  • So one mold can be of more than one sculpt?

I guess a mold is the plastic tree where the pieces are connected and the buyer needs to remove like in MB AA?

If the cost becomes $64,000 for 8 nations or 8K each, I would just make 6 nations and come out with recolored versions for the others.

6 x $8,000= $48,000 or sell 960 units at $50 each to get back your money.

I think on this site alone they will generate at least 500 units within 1 year. The rest is links on BGG and FMG site direct. The profit is when they clear deals with the majors to supply game parts for all sorts of new games.

    Conquest Games will buy them
Fantasy Flight Games might buy them for a AA knockoff
    Eagle Games might
    WOTC might
Xeno games will replace their crappy games with these pieces.
    who else?

WOW! You guys are really getting into the math here!

There are other costs involved also like Freight and samples shipping back and fourth etc…  I can’t tell you the exact cost, I just wanted you to understand that this is VERY expensive.

I have been waiting for an update forever…  I am told to expect the ITALY TRUCK / MEC INF and planes very shortly.  Will post pictures when they arrive.

  • Considering the cost of each unit, perhaps just make one sculpt?

Tanks need a few different sculpts ( heavy, medium)

The utility of different infantry poses is not really a ‘bang for the buck’ concept. Of course if the sculpt was an airborne unit or marine thats different.

  • @Imperious:

That’s correct.  One mold can be for an entire set of sculpts for a full country, depending of course on the size of the machines being used (I used to work for an injection molding company so I’ve got a fair bit of insight into those things).

    @FieldMarshalGames:

Exactly, which is why I took the costs you provided as an estimate and added a ‘guess’ to round out all the extras.  There are ALWAYS more costs than the average consumer sees … we just hope for the best quality at the lowest possible price.  ;)

  • Well, you can be assured that if I have the money, I will buy them. If I don’t, I’ll try to get the money.
