That is so true.
I suppose the bright side is without the bid I would have had only 6 inf in Wrus and Germany could have made an aggressive attack there.
I was thinking about this right after my turn, and maybe a plane bid for Russia might be better. I like the bomber idea b/c you get to use it for many turns, maybe a variation would be with a 10 bid you get a 3rd ftr or with 13 you get a ftr and an inf.
Another problem too is I can’t really think of a safer Russian open (to limit dice). You can do a WRus only attack, but I think you still might need 2-3 inf bid to make sure you take with 11-12 inf just in case Ger gets 3 hits on Defense. An extremely aggressive Axis player may take a crack at the early Wrus stack if you don’t have the early defense. That’s kind of why I like to do Belo as it should eliminate 3 inf, and then block the Baltic armor from Wrus.
There are quite a few bids I’d like to try out, like DD for Eus sz or sub (or 2) for sz 35, or a few other non-Russian bids, but for me it still comes back to how do you protect Russia from slightly bad dice in rd 1. For example my Russia open shouldn’t be a game ender, but with no bid or if I put in a US DD or sub to sz 35, then the extra hits Russia took puts Germany in such a stronger position.
Seems like an awful lot rides on the R1 attacks and its results. I suppose with a high enough bid or different bids you can cover many areas, but then if Russia 1 goes smoothly with minimal losses could that tilt things too far. Darn dice! Â :-D

For the same reason I also feel Belo is a safer attack than Ulkarine as you suggest, because Russia need to minimise risk at the opening. Perhaps such a momentum is necessary to keep the balance since without this Axis will always be in disadvantage with Allies.

I would not have been surprised if you did. But that said I probably wouldn’t have pulled the trigger either. A strong Germany got a little stronger on R1 so I don’t think I would have risked the dice possibly turning and going really bad. Might be a different story if Germany started out weak and this was an opening, but I don’t know if I do that battle either with Germany so strong unless I feel like it is 100% sure thing.
Wrus can be really bad for Russia if you can’t cut Germany down to about 3 inf in range of attack after R1.
