Re: Field Marshal Games Pieces Project Discussion thread

  • @reloader-1:

WotC was inconsistent in the past - but they have a standard color palette now.

They may have a SEMI-standard color palette now … but definately not 100% standardized.

I’m currently painting my pieces.  In 1 set of AA50 and 2 Spring 1942 sets, looking at just the USA pieces right this moment I see 3 different tank shapes and 2 different greens.

Looking at my naval units, there are 3 shades of Orange for the Japanese, 2 shades of tan for the UK, 2 shades of green for the US …

To say they have it down to a standard palette is too generalized.  CLOSE in shades, yes, but the SAME shades, absolutely not!

Not only that, but I have found not all German pieces are 100% black.  At least with the infantry pieces.  I recently got some German infantry from one of the Europe 1940 games and they were a very dark grey.  It’s a slight difference but it is there.  If you looked at a pile of the very dark grey infantry by itself, you would think they were black but when you see true black infantry next to them, you can definitely see the difference.

  • Ok, Ok - then will FMG match the general shade?

All our colours are 100% match to COMBAT DICE.  We use Pantone codes to standardize.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are Pantone codes?

Pantone is a professional Color Matching system.  Each color possible has a number code associated with it that determines the exact mix of base colors to end up with that specific final color.  It’s used to ensure that anyone who wants a specific color will always have that same color (Or should), even if you have to mix up a new batch of ink/paint/dye.

I figure it will be illegal to match 100 % with the AH Axis & Allies units, since its copyrighted and trademarked etc, so even if its possible to do, it would not be allowed to do so.

I don’t think matching the color of A&A pieces would violate any copyright or trademark, at least not by itself.  I think FMG avoided that by simply calling them “Combat Units” and not “Axis & Allies Combat Units”.  Also, FMG is producing different units from WOTC (eg. Folgore fighter instead of brown Me 109) and even the infantry units are in different poses.  So even if they were the exact same color, FMG would not be violating copyright because the pieces will still be different.  Plus, they state that the pieces can be used for Axis & Allies and other WW2 games so that saves them from copyright issues as well.

I think even minor differences can protect you from copyright infringement.  Take the new German Artillery piece from FMG.  It’s an 88mm with a blast shield.  WOTC’s German artillery is an 88mm but it doesn’t have a blast shield so technically it is a different piece.  On a personal note, I think the new FMG German artillery looks really cool.  Can’t wait for more German sculpts.

  • Colors can’t be patented. Thats impossible.

  • @FieldMarshalGames:

    @reloader-1:

That is a given - the dice match current piece colors.

I’m asking if the pieces will match perfectly with current pieces.

All of our COMBAT UNITS will match colours with COMBAT DICE

To confirm: the US units will be a saturated Kelly/Hunter Green (matching combat dice) and not a muted drab?

Does anyone have time for the big-head figures popular with metal figure war gamers?

    Nice comparison here:

Hey FMG, do you have any further news updates with regards to how the Germany Combat Units are coming along? It’s been pretty quiet round here the last couple of weeks. Thank you!  :-)

    (Sorry guys)

  • These German pieces look excellent! Any idea of a ball park release date FMG? I know you had said 4-6 weeks after each nation’s release, and that Italy was probably shipping in January, so does that mean were looking at a mid-February release?

  • FMG- I know you plan on doing both Black and Gray for the Germans, I was wondering if both colors will be done simultaneously, or will we have to wait for U.S. to be completed? Thank you.

Right now we are working on getting the Nations done and released as quickly as possible.  SPECIAL EDITIONS will be released later.

The FIRST Germany Units will be Grey
