On the 24th May 1864 Grant gifted Lee the kind of opportunity that rarely happens in a campaign: to wreck the other’s army.
After the bloodletting of May 5-12th, that cost Lee 22000 casualties and Grant 34000,'weakening both armies by 33% and 25% respectively, Grant again disengaged and moved South towards Richmond. Lee had followed and had been reinforced with 7 small Brigades from his capital.
Grant had inadvertentally straddled his large army across the North Anna river.
Lee saw the way to take advantage of his smaller numbers and punish the Federal II Corps, Grant’s best. He could throw 30000 men at the 24000 that were over the V in the river separating Grant’s two halves of his army. Hancock’s 24000 could not be reinforced, because of the V of the river, so he readied his assault.
On the afternoon of the 24th Lee fell violently sick with diarrhoea. He lay helplessly for hours while the opportunity to assault, before the Union commanders realised the sure situation were in.
The reason Lee’s defensive strike could not be undertaken was simple: the attrition of the last 19 days had robbed him of a subordinate able to manage it.
Time and opportunity passed. Grant and Hancock’s isolated Corps were extremely lucky.
We all know the loss of a quarter of Grant’s force would never have changed his resolve to “fight it all out, even if it takes all Summer”, but another battering would have diminished his potential to do so sooner.
Dungeons and Dragons (ver 3.5)

3.5? Why not 4.0?
Well, boss, cause I don’t have the 4.0 books. :P I’d be willing to incorporate rules from other sets, provided they mesh with the rules I have and don’t create power characters, etc.
I’m actually a very open GM, however, Bestow Curse will NEVER be allowed as an enchantment with permanency on it. :P I’ve seen DMs burned by that before!
-
You guys got to be kidding. :|
-
@stuka:
You guys got to be kidding. :|
Why? It’d be good to have a game going in memoriam of the founder!
-
I’m waiting for D&D 4.0 to be released. June 6th, yeah.
We could do 3.5 in the meantime though.
Would we just be using rules from the core rulebooks and the online errata? It would make things easier to keep track of, and new players could check out the online rules for Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 at:
The site doesn’t have ALL the nice pictures and descriptions and explanations that the real books have, but a willing and able player should be able to figure it out.
Guess we’d need a fighter-class, a rogue-class, a wizard-class, and a cleric-class, plus maybe two other assorted players and a DM.
I can fill in any of the roles except DM (too much work).
-
I actualy played Neverwinter nights On my last deployment, until we all got bored and went back to Delta Force:BHD :-)
-
So, is anyone going to play? I personally prefer 3.5 over earlier editions. As 3.5 was not so confusing on some issues, such as thaco and negative armor class. Who the hell came up with the lower your armor class, the better. Anyways, 4.0 should be pretty good. In the meantime I’m up for playing if anyone is going to.
-
If I can get 3-5 players I’m game to run it. As I said, my books are 3.5, and I have the 2.0 books, but some new players may get confused with THAC0 and Proficiencies, so it may be better to just stick with 3.5. (Though if there is a “kit” (like Noble Warrior, Elven Pirate, etc) you want I can help convert it to 3.5.)
-
I’m in for playing a fighter. Unless of course it’s taken, then I’ll stick with the rogue. I would stick with 3.5, as it is generally easier for most people. Thaco can be a nightmare for newbies.
-
There’s no limit in my groups. Everyone can be a fighter, or everyone can be something different, or everyone can be clerics, or whatever. I recommend different classes, I think it makes the tasks easier, but I’m not going to dictate who can be what and who has to be what. :)
I’m benevolent, honest!
-
I’m going to take the high road with choosing a class and go with the ever rage fueled barbarian. Everybody loves him when he goes berserk, just an all around charismatic guy. With the excpetion of a torso sundering battle axe, hee, hee.
-
Man, tell me you’re not going for a barbarian with a high Charisma . . .
Are we gonna use point buy to generate characters, or roll?
Guess I’ll play a wizard. pew pew blam blam.
-
First Edition Cleric…
Armor, Weapons, Spells, and HEALING…
-
No need to worry, he’ll only be charismatic when he’s cleaving through ranks of his enemies. After the bloody battle, he’ll be back to his sullen, beer swilling self.
-
I was thinking generation of 4d6 take the best 3.
From there you can drop two points from one attribute and add one point to another attribute. Since the site has an in-house dicey it should be easy enough to verify results.
Switch, in 3rd edition, if you were unaware and I’m not saying you were but just in case, clerics can drop any spell they have prayed for instantly and swap it for a healing spell. Which I think is TOTALLY awesome!
Also, my PERSONAL in house rule is that clerics can use any weapons that is justifiable based on the faith. You worship the god of the seas, you can have a trident. You worship goddess of the hunt, then you can take a bow. Etc.
BTW, my pantheon are the major deities of Greece, but I’ll allow some of the lesser ones on a case by case basis.
BTW, the start level I am considering is going to be L3 or L5, I need to roll up some of the monsters before I determine it in concrete.
I’d LIKE to start on June First (my finals were pushed into mid-may because of retard boy shooting up my campus on Valentine’s Day, otherwise I’d go earlier.)
-
I’m out. Powered ability score rules, free cleric abilities (you need to take the War domain for an appropriate god to have the appropriate weapon) . . . and Grecian gods just don’t go too well with wizards.
-
Powered abilities?
3d6 are going to average around 8-14, if I remember correctly. Making it 4d6 best three should give you 1X 17, 2X 15 and the rest between 10-14. If you drop two off one and add one to another, you’ll run out of points fast.
As for Wizards, I don’t care what deity they worship. :P
And I hope you are not referring to Clerical Spontaneous Casting as a free ability, it’s written into the Ver 3 rules. I was just bring attention to it in case you guys were unaware.
As for weapons, I find it silly that you can worship the God of the Sea but you have to use a hammer. Hammers don’t really work too well in the water! Likewise, if you worship the god of the hunt, what are you doing with a hammer? You should have a bow and a dagger. (Likewise limited to leather armor and no platemail. Hard to hunt in plate.)
-
I got the original AD&D books in hardcover. Players Handbook, Monster Manual, Dungeon Masters Guide, and Deities and Demigods; along with the Fiend Folio, Monster Manual II and the Wilderness Survival Guide. I have a few other books published by others about Alchemy and stuff, but I don’t have anything else. What are you guys talking about? Ver 2.0? Ver 3.5?? Ver 4.0???! I’m afraid to show my kids this stuff. The books are already well worn and I don’t think they could withstand another generation of this much love.
-
I was/am aiming at version 3.5 myself. Second Edition is my favorite, but there’s a big push to retire it so who am I to stay in the way?
-
First Edition… THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE!
May Gary Gygax rest in peace…
-
LOL!!!
AD&D ! I used to play and run that years ago !
First edition was okay in its day, but ‘Feats’ RULE!!, 3rd edition all the way… (I’m not hearing a lot of good comments about 4.0 apparently its just being made to make money for wizards, they’ll stop making stuff for 3.5 , forcing gamers to shell out hundreds of pounds for new books, and its all apparently geared towards getting people to use the minatures… AD&D is now a business more than ever… not much room for roleplayers in it anymore !)
…sure the system falls apart at about 15th lvl+ and ‘Epic’ is completely unplayable, but at low to mid level its a lot of fun and your characters get tons of options., I could never go back to playing first… no way.
