Japan is unstoppable, even when the US goes Japan first in 1941 Anniversary Scenario

  • This is just another rant post in which I complain how unbalanced Japan is. It is a shame that Japan is always too strong in almost every Axis and Allies variant:

I remember the old Pacific game in which Japan could basically win every game by just focusing on India.
Then there was The new Pacific game which had to be nerfed because of Japan’s “Death Star” and their invincibility because of the amount of fighters.
It is not particularly unbalanced in 1942 2nd Edition, but it is much easier and profitable for the US to go Germany first because it takes so long to build a fleet that can threaten Japan - and usually, Japan is already before Moscow before the US even starts going for the Money Islands.

There was a discussion that an Indian IC could balance things out, but here is a screenshot of me playing as Japan that shows you can assemble an army due to their 5 transports and their amount of fighters that can take India in R2… and you do not even have to neglect the Money Islands.

japan attack 2 India after attack.png

And even if you do not go India first, your first round will probably look a bit like this:

    Japan attack 1.png

With this opening, you can push forward into Russia, defeat almost all of China, take the Money Islands, do Pearl etc. In my opinion, Japan has just too many options. Even if the US decides to go after Japan, they cannot stop them from taking all of Asia, from India to all of China and the Eastern parts of Russia.

Did I overlook something or is there any way to do a successful KJF in this game (assuming the Japanese player doesn’t make some serious mistakes)?

    @cloud7707

Axis & Allies Anniversary was the box that got me back into Axis & Allies when it was reprinted a few years ago. I loved the seemingly dynamic options of the 1941 setup. Without enough games against different opponents to find a “balance” point myself, I did find that playing with National Objectives is heavily slanted towards the Axis.

There was a discussion that an Indian IC could balance things out

I tried a few things to continue playing as Axis, with National Objectives. One of them was giving India and South Africa a starting IC. This helped the UK hold the Indian Ocean for a while longer, but it also took pressure off Germany and so it almost always still resulted in an Axis victory.

Even if the US decides to go after Japan, they cannot stop them from taking all of Asia, from India to all of China and the Eastern parts of Russia.

Egypt & India both need a little boost, if you give 1 Infantry to Egypt, India, and Yunnan, and don’t play with National Objectives I think it is a pretty balanced game despite the clear strong position of Japan (especially in terms of air force!).

I highly recommend checking out @The_Good_Captain 's excellent video discussing the balance of A&A 1941 scenario:

  • @mr_stucifer hey, first of all thanks for the reply! However, I am not sure that one Infantry is enough. In 1942 2nd Edition, Japan starts with two transports (of which one is destroyed early) and only two aircraft carriers. However, even that is enough to pressure India very hard and even take it on turn 2 or 3 if the Allied player did not build at least 3 Infantry there each turn.

I will definitely check out the video, very excited if there is something I have overlooked!

To be fair, in the example given you do not hold India. I do not consider “Japan first” as a strategy that works in Anniversary edition. Japan starts with 9 Fighters, 3 Carriers, a Battleship, and will have most of that left after turn 1.

At a minimum Japan will probably have a fleet with:
6 Ftr, 1 CV, 1 BB, 1 CA. Add in a DD for ASW on round 2/3 when USA starts buying subs for the Pacific.
    Offensive power 30 Defensive 39

To match the combat power offensively against their fleet, while having defense proof against their attack, America needs to spend two rounds of buys (again, just to be able to move off SZ 56). Something like 1 BB, 2 CV, 1 Ftr, 5 subs.

74 IPCs to let you move out, without any transports to capture territories, while Japan and Germany are ground-pounding China and the USSR sucking IPCs out of your Allies’ economy. Or instead you unplug from the Pacific, scoot your carrier group to the Atlantic, build transports, another carrier round 1, and are contesting North Africa by round 3 at the latest. Any fleet units Germany buys are doomed (eventually) and taking IPCs away from the fight for Russia.

I think if you want Japan first to be a viable strategy, 1942 might be a better starting point. The setup in 1941 is so favorable to Japan to allow them to do their big J1 moves ala some level of historical simulacrum.

There is also the Balanced Mod for 1941 setup, I have not played it much but I do like the light-touch changes and reworking of National Objectives to not be so heavily Axis-favored.

  • @mr_stucifer Totally agree with you. I have only played the balanced mod once, although I like the new NO, I think what really has to be done is to adjust the starting setup since, as you pointed out, it takes just too much effort to match japan’s fleet and by the way you have more boats, Japan has already done such a huge expansion that it meets your IPCs (comparing US and Japan’s IPC count).

@cloud7707 I made a little mod for triple a to play test a version where all the Chinese units and territories are USSR’s, I played it a couple times with my friend that has patience with me. It ended up evolving in to an alt history setup with more neutrals in the war. Axis Spain, neutral Persia/turkey could be attacked.

with Russia invested in China (IC in Szechwan and raised territory value to 3) and getting the IPCs, pluss the turn order allowing to consolidate, made a KJF more viable. My friend tried it one game but made a couple mistakes with positioning
