    As I am new to this game, I think I made some strategic errors early, but I’ve been saved from an embarrassing defeat by good dice in the mass attacks against individual unit battles.

    Unfortunately, as I have been spending the whole night polishing off a bottle of 100 proof vodka, I’m not in any shape to make any moves right now(typing this post has taken me 20 minutes already). The battle resumes after a good nights rest. Back in 8 hours or so.

  • Ok, best moves: Ottomans.

    1. Moving all units vs. Austria.
    2. not reinforcing Eastern Turkey

    So far I had the same idea (though never had the chance to try it).

    The nice addition: you dont have to defend Lazes for a long time if you build a few Marines. Now you can delay the Russian entry to the Middle East for some time - and also keep Russia back in the West. It takes 2 or 3 turns longer till Russia can help Austria.
    The Marine units make the difference.

    Btw - I dont think the big mistakes were done in the beginning, but later.
    Example again Ottomans: you raised a big fleet and forgot to build reinforcements on land.

    The problem with the Ottomans was that they were already fighting a 2 front war when the UK built the encampment in Candia. I simply couldn’t afford to allow the UK to open up a 3rd front against the Ottomans so I decided that the only way to prevent that was to crush Candia before the UK Med fleet could get there and reinforce it. Believe me, I wasn’t at all happy to have to build all of those ships. Hopefully, they will come in handy later when the Ottomans are surrounded on all sides.

    I personally think my biggest mistake was not building more fleet early with Sweden to control the Baltic from the beginning. It also might have helped me to evacuate some of my more expensive units from Finland before the Russians destroyed them.

    Ha. I actually came into this game expecting to lose. My main goal was not to make a fool of myself in the process.  :lol:

    It’s a bit more complicated.

    1. Ottomans fought on one frontier - Austria - and succeeded to keep Russia away or at least to delay them for quite some time. Perfect!
    2. England build an encampment on Candia for 8 PU and you responded by building 3 ships for 24 PU. Well - perfect investment for England. You build far more than needed. And dont forget - England fights also Spain and France! I cant afford everything at the same time. I simply have to force you to invest more into unnessary units and distant areas :-)

    Sweden is your weak point so far, I agree. Though they could still be far more dangerous.

    It’s not that I had a choice in making that imbalanced purchase. If UK had built max protect (2 fortresses) in Candia and sent their Med fleet directly toward Candia(2 turns away), delaying my attack on Candia by even 1 turn would have made Candia impossible to eliminate and given you the ability to reinforce the Russians in Turkey with UK ground units. I was faced with 2 equally distasteful options.  Either prepare to eliminate the English threat immediately or build ground defense and be vulnerable to English attack where I couldn’t defend against it. I came to the conclusion that allowing the English to assist the Russians/Austrians was worse that losing a turn of ground production. And since I couldn’t know your intentions with the English, I had to assume the worst case. I went through quite a few purchase possibilities and what I eventually built was what gave me the best possible odds for taking Candia this turn in the event that you had decided to build 2 fortresses there.

    And dont forget - England fights also Spain and France! I cant afford everything at the same time.

    That’s exactly my point. The Ottomans were already fighting Russia and Austria. Adding the English was an unacceptable possibility so I decided to remove it before it became a bigger threat.

    I simply have to force you to invest more into unnessary units and distant areas :-)

    That’s what I’ve been trying to do, as well. As long as I could force the UK to keep building ships it became impossible for you to keep your Med encampments fully supplied. The only reason the UK hasn’t spread faster throughout the Med is because I’ve been challenging you for control of the Channel with the French fleet. Once the UK is neutralized in the Med, Spain is going to become a beast. I can only hope that it happens before the Ottomans are completely destroyed.

  • Here comes Russia. I think Ottomans have enough to worry about with Russia. I dont think English pressure is necessary, but that’s my own experience. Though I remember Veqryn once trying to put pressure on Turkey. One of my very first games. Generally I dont like that option, but thank god you dont know my personal preferences concerning this map :-)

    In that case you are partially right: I like destroing Spain with England. Without the help from France it would have been gone probably by round 10 completly. I still think they wont become that strong, but I have to take some actions towards that goal.

    i don’t play at all as much as I used to, by my most ‘winning’ french strategy is to:
    1. go all land to start out with, usually 100% cavalary
    2. after conquering hanovre and pushing both austria and prussia onto the defensive, i switch to producing sea units (and still some land).  i usually produce in the med then move them to the atlantic after clearing the med of uk units.

    i like it because it scares the crap out of prussia and austria, thereby freeing up sweden and ottomans to do whatever they want to do.  the only problem is that i have to switch to sea units in time to save spain’s convoy.

    still, i think there is a lot of room for improvement in strategies

    and i also hope to make the game not just better balanced: but better balanced for multiple strategies
    i don’t want napoleonic to be some 1 trick pony where there is a single optimal strategy for each nation.  i really want each nation to have multiple optimal strategies, and each of them still be balanced overall.

    anyway, i’m willing to bet from this game that u505 would kick my butt if i had of got him as an opponent…
