• Anyone seen the movie?  I caught it last night.  I’m not a huge fan of QT, and in fact haven’t been thrilled about his last few, but this was a fairly entertaining WW2 flick.

It is kinda slow in lots of the movie, but there are some great multilingual actors that keep it together.  Every Nazi seems to be extremely shrewd and conniving, Brad Pitt’s character is fairly shallow (or I should say the development of), but somewhat humorous.  A lot of dialogue that is obviously QT, and some “what the hell???” moments.  And let’s not forget that you get to see on screen what everyone has wanted to do for 60 years to Hitler and the Nazis.  Rather brutal, all in all.

Also, some pretty graphic scenes in the movie, but I don’t think anything you haven’t encountered before unless you’ve not seen many movies or are squeamish.

  • I saw it yesterday afternoon.

Its kinda funny in a campy way. Its like Dirty Dozen meets Natural Born Killers.

Some of the extras looked nothing like Germans and more like people from the midwest.

    But it was kinda funny.

  • I enjoyed it.  The actor that plays Landa did a fantastic job.  You really need to dig to find an actor that fluent in 4 different languages, and QT found the right guy.

  • OH yea the funniest part is when Aldo Raines try’s to speak Italian to a German who happens to also actually speak Italian.

Its like John Wayne playing that Genghis Khan role in the movie The Conqueror.

Perfect description.  QT has always been campy, I think.  He’s just run it into the ground after doing the seemingly same method every time.

Yeah, he was pretty damn good.  And did the genius subterfuge, evil Nazi SS officer that I think makes a good antagonist perfectly.

The only thing I’m confused about is that I thought there were some Basterds that went unaccounted for.  There were 10 plus the Brit, and 3 I have no idea what happened to them.

  • im gonna see this movie when i can.

  • Well i saw the movie, its pretty humorous.

  • I could not stop cracking up at the Jew Bear and the obvious fake body he was beating in the head (bouncing off the ground).  Any time movies have a fake body - falling, beaten, shot, etc. - I can’t help but laugh my @$$ off.

  • What about when they kept shooting at Hitlers head? It was looking really fake after the first 200 rounds. His head was bobbing because it was clearly ‘fake’ looking.

  • I saw it on Friday and thought it was a great movie but a few questions were left unanswered:

    1. How did the “Basterd” who was in the prisoner truck with Pitt get captured?

    2. Also, several of “The Basterds” were unaccounted for in the end.  There were 8 of them (not including Brad Pitt, the German prisoner, and the Brit) 1 died along in the tavern shoot out, 2 died in the fire at the theatre, and 1 got away with Pitt, leaving 4 of them unaccounted for….

  • I don’t think its the kind of movie thats aiming at any accuracy in the story. Kinda like Star Wars when the Death Star explodes and makes noise and all the bad guys have British accents.

Yes, that got me too.  And all I could do was think “damn, it took 60+ years for some revenge porn.”  That scene should have been filmed in May 1945 and broadcasted immediately.

I wondered as well what happened to the whole crew.  I counted 11 in all - Aldo, 8 soldiers, Stiglitz, and the Brit like you did - and noticed everyone was not accounted for.

Before the tavern shoot out it looked like there were only about 4 Basterds left in the basement (plus the Brit and Stiglitz).  I imagine they cut out some scenes since the movie was pretty long as it was.

  • I finally saw the movie today and I thought it was great.

Best QT film since Pulp Fiction.

  • I saw it with my son last month late after work. It was great, Hogans Heroish in parts. Only thing I don’t care for was the sub titles. I know they spoke German but I hate sub titles.

But the bad guys in ALL American movies have British accents.  Even when the antagonists have American accents they’re usually played by British actors, because Americans don’t like being seen to be bad.

    e.g. Gary Oldman.

  • What do you mean Americans don’t like being seen as bad? Americans love being badasses. You say that to the wrong person in this country and you’ll find out what I am talking about.

So why do they have to hire so many European actors to play baddies in American movies?

Has any American actor ever played Hitler (in a serious piece at least?)

Remember Professor Heinkel and the Bumblebee:

  • Probably because they are looking for a guy who looks like Hitler.

  • Bruno Ganz is probably the best Hitler I’ve come across.  I never thought I’d use “best” in a sentence with Hitler, but there you go.

Also, I would have a sex change just to have Diane Kruger’s babies.

  • Got the movie on dvd. Was definitely worth watching a second time.
