J1 attack does break the game, unfortunately. We had to adopt 2 house rules to rebalance and AFAIK they’ve worked: (1) Japan cannot attack the UK, ANZAC, Dutch or the United States on turn 1 and (2) The UK, ANZAC and United States cannot attack Japan on turn 1. Easy fix.

UK really needs an Asian or Africa IC if it wants to be successful. If by turn 3 or 4 all of its colonies and IPCs are gone there’s no way in can viable for the rest of the game and that basically forces the USA to play helper for Russia and take on Japan. UK without colonies = Italy, and the Allies can’t survive long in '41 with that.
I’m a huge fan of the E. Indies IC, it takes a little luck and planning to make it happen but it puts the UK in a perfect position to retake Australia, Borneo, India and eventually the Phillipines over time. 4 UK units pumping out of the farthest east island territory plus the USA on the other side makes Japan’s life incredibly difficult. The opportunity for an E. Indies IC doesn’t present itself too often, but if you’re guaranteed to hold it until your next turn that could be a game ender for Japan.

Description: Started KJF but Russia got some incredible rolls making Germany an attractive target. German vulnerability and Italy having some success in the Med diverted a huge amount of US focus to Europe/Africa who focused soley at Italy to help Russia fight a one front war. The UK by round 3 had IC’s in India, Australia and the East Indies which after holding against Japanese invasion started pumping out more ships (from E Indies and Australia) and tanks than Japan could handle. UK made a huge point to sink any Japanese transport that was built, which made retaking the Phillipines and Borneo fairly easy especially after the UK got Paratroopers. The UK single-handedly would’ve crushed Japan if not for the USA making quick work of Italy, forcing an Axis concession.
Observations/Recommendations: Japan should have gone straight for the E. Indies but viewed America as a bigger threat, did not see 100% of UK’s effort going into Asia. Allowing the US player to focus soley on Italy sped up what was becoming a certain allied victory. -

Japan would’ve fallen a few turns earlier to the US who would’ve plowed tanks straight through to liberate Russia. The German player probably could’ve taken the US alone but the UK was turning into a bit of a threat by the time Russia fell.
It looked like the Allies were going to win that exact way until the bombers eliminated any chance America had at working it’s way through Asia.

Game Length: 6.5 hours (with cigarette breaks streching it out a bit)
Bias: Japan player’s first game, but his Axis partners were experienced and guided him through. Russian player was inebriated, but never did anything that would indicate an unstable state of mind, so to speak.Description:
In the Pacific Japan got off to a slow start like you’d expect from a new player, but got a major break on turn 2 with heavy bombers. Though America had taken every island except for Japan and Iwo Jima plus S/E Asia the US still had to tiptoe around the Pacific trying to avoid the 5 bombers that were teched to high hell. Eventually US thought his navy would withstand the bombers and brought it out to the Carolines where it was crushed. America was making 70 IPC’s a turn so it definitely could’ve eventually taken Japan but by then the UK had fallen in disrepair and Russia was toasted.
Europe was bad. Russia did not have the success it needed on it’s first turn losing a lot of tanks in it’s attacks to create a buffer zone around the production facilities. Russia being Russia the funds were never around to rebuild those tanks. The UK held Africa, India and Australia to the bitter end (mainly because Japan had to spend 110% of it’s money to keep up with the Americans even with Heavy Bombers) but Germany had far too much money after taking Russia and launched an overwhelming Sealion. America ignored Europe almost completely because it had to spend a lot of money to counter the Heavy Bombers with cannon fodder destroyers and free hit battleships. Help came far too late for mainland UK which survived 2 consecutive German invasion attempts before finally falling.
Observations: America was far too preoccupied with the Pacific and although it gained a huge edge in production Japan’s heavy bombers cancelled it out alone. Long Range aircraft weren’t enough to get all the planes from the pacific onto the UK. Japan simply played the game to survive eradicating anything that got within bombing range while Germany smashed Russia. Italy had almost no success in Africa and shifted all it’s resources to claiming some of Russia’s carcass.
