I still have MapView 1.3. Is it safe to download and play the latest version for one of the new historical scenarios or should I wait until you (Mot) have fixed any potential bugs?

RE: Only 2 sets of units in North Africa cases
Sorry to hear of your mis-fortune. Keep us posted if you end up selling anything via Ebay. I only purchased 1 booster (which included a rare Veteran Panzer Mk-III) and the North African Map / Scenario pack and was thinking about just going to Ebay for the few particular units or vehicles I might need for scenarios.
I really hope WOTC isn’t making some deliberate mistake that would sink any hopes of this great game being resurrected.

RE: A&A Minis Module Support - Unit Requests
Thanks for posting these Mot. Half-Track and I are just about finished with the 1st North African scenario, “It Makes One Cry”, and I think it has been a great alternative to playing the standard, 100 point, random map, game.
I look forward to starting another scenario based game when I get back from Spring Break vacation next week.

RE: Combining A&A Guadalcanal, A&A Minis, and A&A War at Sea
The previous link for the Guadalcanal miniatures campaign alternates between Axis & Allies Miniatures battles and War at Sea Battles. It does not tie in with their Guadalcanal board game. I don’t think they have yet to combine all three games into one campaign. I’d like to try something like that at my local game scene because I think it would be to difficult to do via PBEM.

RE: Combining A&A Guadalcanal, A&A Minis, and A&A War at Sea
Yes, that’s the idea. It would make the campaign board game very long and drawn out but it would really enhance the tactical play. The idea of trying to hold off overwhelming odds for the sake of achieving a better result elsewhere on the campaign level sounds fascinating.
The Guadalcanal Campaign sounds idea for this combo because its at a point in the war where victory could swing either way. Niether Axis nor the Allies had uncontested control of the land, air or sea at this point in the war.

RE: Combining A&A Guadalcanal, A&A Minis, and A&A War at Sea
Thanks Frimmel,
I have these Each figure would represent a certain amount of points in the miniature game. For example, one infantry figure equals 50 points in Axis and Allies Miniatures. So if a player moves 3 infantry figures in to a space where the enemy has 2 infantry figures, rather than rolling dice once to determine the outcome of the battle, you would play a 150 point to 100 point miniatures battle to determine the outcome. The same could be done with Axis and Allies War at Sea.

RE: Cover Ammo Depot,Fuel Depot,HQ
It sounds reasonable to me. For the infanty units, a good Company Gunnery Sergeant worth his salt is going to cover and conceal the ammo boxes, fuels cans and the company HQ. For vehicle units … I’m not so sure. The volume and space requirements for tank ammo and fuel must be very large. I guess it would have over complicated the game to have separate ammo and fuel depots for both soldier and vehicle unit types.

RE: Axis and Allies Miniatures: North Africa 1939-1943
Very cool new options. I hope this gives the game a re-birth in my area. The only place I get to play AAM is here on this forum. Don’t worry, even if I do find some new friends to play with in real life, I’ll always save time for at least one PBEM game here with you all :-o

RE: Turn order
OODA stands for Observe, Orient, Decide and Act. It was a leadership theory developed by a Korean War Air Force pilot ace that the Marine Corps adopted in its warfighting philosophy in the mid to late 80s. The idea is to to risk a decision with only about 70% of the information verses the enemy who hesitates to make a decision until he has 100% information. By the time is the enemy is ready to make a decision, you are already on to the next problem and he ends up having to react more and more to your to your previous actions.
While this idea is not likely to be simulated in a PBEM war game, the whole initiative cocnept in Axis & Allies minis can make or break the plan of attack.

RE: Turn order
I am a big fan of the game mechanics “as is”. I like how initiative, movement and assault interplay with one another. I also like the initiative based abilities that usually have more to do with getting “inside the OODA Loop” of you opponent that sheer fire power.

RE: A&A Minis Module Support - Unit Requests
I can help out with the next batch of graphics if any graphics support is needed. I like the idea of AA units and aircraft next.
And what about the next batch official Avalon Hill scenario maps? I plan on finishing the remaining North African Campaign maps next week, but am open to recommendations for the next batch of campaign maps after that. (Normandy???, Guadalcanal???, Eastern Front???)

RE: Download links for the latest AAM Modules
Just downloaded and put the first two North Africa scenario mods in the appropriate MapView folder. Wanted to let you all know that “It Makes One Cry” does not show up in the New Game Window. “Come Out & Fight” does load in the New Game Window, but when you open it, it loads the “It Makes One Cry” map.

Combining A&A Guadalcanal, A&A Minis, and A&A War at Sea
I briefly saw a link somewhere for house rules on combining all three of these into a mini-campaign. My recent text searches have just pointed to the A&A Guadalcanal game. Does anybody know of any house rules along these lines?

RE: COMBAT ZONE
I haven’t followed all the re-direction of AAM marketing, shake-ups, transition of staff at Wizards, but it seems to me AAM has been relegated to the category of “out of print” and to be played only by an underground cult of die-hard fans. The only place I can seem to get an AAM game in is on this forum via PBEM.
Maybe the release of the Northa Africa sets will sell well enough to make Wizards reconsider resurrecting the Combat Zone program.

RE: French Alpine Troop
Roger. I was delyaed crossing the line of departure. I just sent a sample map. Let me know how it looks and we can continue from there.

RE: A&A Minis Module Support - Unit Requests
MOT,
I’ll send you a sample map from the “It Makes One Cry” Official North Africa scenario. Let me know what dimension and file format will work for you in MapView and I can start sending some more maps your way.

RE: French Alpine Troop
It would be great to see more “early” war games like these. Lots of fire and maneuver and less tank hulk battles. I’ve been playing a 1942 Guadalcanal series with Stimpy and it has been refreshing to get away from the King Tigers and the Soviet IS-2s. In the low tank armor games like the one Stimpy and I are playing in, the mortars and machine guns are almost just as much a threat as main tank guns.

RE: Download links for the latest AAM Modules
These are great updates MOT. I’m sorry I took so long to download them and I hope I haven’t screwed up any games with previous oppoenents by having an older module version.

RE: A&A Minis Module Support - Unit Requests
Hey Mot,
I think the game mechanics are pretty good so I don’t have any particular request for the Mapview system in itself. What I would like to work on with you (I can supply the graphics) are creating modules based on some of the historical scenarios posted on the official AAM site.
I have a map already created for the “It Makes One Cry” North Africa scenario. I’m not smart or patient enough to do the XML programing stuff myself, but I can provide the map and the BMPs for the playing pieces.
Thanks,
Brian
