Why does anyone care about this game if you already have AA50 ? How many people played classic after revised came out? I’m not sure I understand what all the fuss is about.

RE: Is AA Guadalcanal worth buying?
I just purchased the game over a month ago and have been pleased so far. The integrated movement sequence, combat phases, and hit asignment are nice features. I suspect the game can get played out over time as the map is limited. However, I think the game lends itself to opportunism as the movement sequence allows for faster and possibly sloppier play similar to speed chess. It is certainly worth a spin especially if you can get it on sale.

Optimum vp bid
I’ve played several games of AAP and have read that 24-25 vp provides a balanced game. It seems Im a turn or two short in SBRing Japan into oblivion. The last two games I took a northern approach after retaking Midway to take Bonin islands so my bombers could have escort that was not carrier based. This seemed to be the shortest approach, however I could not secure until turn 6 so Japan had 3,4,4,4,4,3,3 points and moved his air units from asia and a portion of his fleet to defend against SBR so I could only muster 1 or 0 vp a turn.
Any suggestions?

RE: New aircraft lineup
It dosen’t seem like there is much enthusiam for this option. As for fighter escort protection it depends on ones preference for choice pickings or massed rolls. In pacific the choice is between rolls of 2 or less vs 4 or less.

New aircraft lineup
I was putzing around with Guadacanal last night trying to get a taste for the flavor of the game when I realized that despite all the rule changes/ additions that have occured since AAclassic the aircraft lineup has remained the same. In a pacific theatre game the addition of torpedo/dive bombers might be something to think about.
In Guadalcanal these units could be cheaper than fighters with no sea or air attack (1 for land attack) and be used in a similar fasion to subs eg. at the end of the air attack phase any survivng units could choose their targets with hits on 1 or 2 to soften up the fleet before the naval phase commences. For land or airfield attacks standard rules would apply.
In AAP play would follow along SBR lines…dive/torpedo bombers enter a hostile zone alone or with other units. Fighters on CAP could intercept say with hits on 3 or less. If there is fighter escort hits would be at 2 or less and losses can be taken from fighters. Surviving fighters would need a 2 or less to hit. Defender choses casualties. (they get to return fire)
Cost for these units could be 8 IPC.I’d be surprised if I was the first one to think of this but I havent seen anything in the threads that I’ve read. Curious to know peoples thoughts.

RE: Playing options
Thanks for the imput. I have only played ftf and when I was younger we had 7-8 people who would play AAclassic or Conquest of the Empire anytime (usually in our off season from stratomatic baseball) so there was no need to even consider this. Besides, the ballbreaking and on hijinks that went on during the games was sometimes better than the game itself. (anybody who was Numidia and 2 catapults down knows this)

RE: Was the Sherman Under-rated?
high profile, poor slope to armor made the sherman at best, a mediocre medium tank. the allies vast quantitative superiority ,however, more than offset any german qualitative advantages. the T 34 , and when working well , the panther were the best medium tanks of WW2

RE: Airfield construction
thanks for your help on both counts. I’m new to the Guad and the rules are slightly different. I do like the integrated turn sequence.

Airfield construction
Is it necessary for the supply tokens required to build an airfield to be on the island where the airfield is to be built?

RE: Saburo Sakai's AAPacific Essays - #6 Japan's Futile Battles
I have to agree. The essays are insightful and informative. I started reading the older posts out of curiosity in an attempt to fill my experience void. I havent seen any SS postings recently. I would like to know his positions and thoughts for the other games.

Noob ? re aircraft
an aircraft unit can at most can be in 2 combat phases/turn ( air/sea, air/land) am I correct?

Sub question
If you enter a seazone with multiple subs and there are multiple targets do the targets have to be declared immediately or can one be opportunistic and declare sequentially: eg if 4 subs enter a zone containing a BB CA and 2 trans; if I choose the CA first and damage it can I send the 2nd sub to finish it ;if successful slate different targets with the third and fourth.

AA50 $300…. yikes!!!!!
I just purchased BOTB for 19.99 and was shocked to see all links for AA50 were sold out or charging $300. I got mine about three weeks ago for $75. Are there any cheaper sites?

Playing options
I’m new to the forums. What are the pros/cons for playing online, by forum or by email? What are most people doing currently?

RE: Substalling
dinosaur, curious to hear where you place your bombers to SBR Japan into dust. I have plaved several games now and unless US has ample fighter escort casulties are between 1-3 bombers/turn between AA and fighters. If japan senses your intentions it only needs 4 fighters or so to defend.

RE: Movies to watch while playing AA
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Downfall.
-
RE: Substalling
For substalling I was wondering if you can acquire enough VP (assuming the opponent is competent) without employing that tactic.
-
RE: Substalling
That answered my question. Sometimes in classic I would withdraw attacking subs while pressing the attack with the rest of the fleet to block a possible counter.

RE: Reinforcements
does this mean that you can buffer newly acquired teritories in non combat movement with the exception of aircraft. I was under the assumption that entering enemy territory could only occur in combat movement.
-
Reinforcements
If Japan captures Midway on J1 transports from sz36 could move 3 zones to midway but any loaded units would not be able to unload until the following turn. Am I correct in that assumption?
