There are only enough (double sided) control markers for the islands included in the game. However, your solution would work if you have another A&A game that you could get control markers from.
Airfield construction

Is it necessary for the supply tokens required to build an airfield to be on the island where the airfield is to be built?
-
yes. when it talks about building airfields it may not read as clear as when it talks about repairing airfields, but the supplies need to be where they are going to be used. Like the supply tokens need to be at your home base to repair ships there.

thanks for your help on both counts. I’m new to the Guad and the rules are slightly different. I do like the integrated turn sequence.

I hear ya, I only got into it this year and am still wading my way through it. Enjoying it though, a good bit like Bulge, which is great, but you have to come at it like a new game and not think of it as one of the older AA games.
Krieghund’s got a link to the new FAQ too on the Larry Harris site, if you haven’t seen it yet.

The alternating move of units of the same type is a really neat aspect of this game. It always feels like it is your turn to me. You never really feel like you’re just waiting around.
