Hi! I just figured that there already seem to be pretty good summaries of LHTR vs. the original Revised rulebook. LHTR seemed like the best comparison point since those transport rules seemed to revert largely back to the timing in Classic.
Does anybody play with 3rd Edition rules?
-
I was wondering if anybody actually plays this game with third edition rules, especially on an actual board. The differences between 2nd and 3rd edition are relatively minor, but they do change the game:
“1. Defending subs can submerge or retreat from combat. A submerged sub remains in the sea zone and resurfaces after combat.
2. Planes can retreat from an amphibious assault.
3. There can be multiple AA guns in one territory, but only one can fire.
4. New sea units can be placed in an enemy-occupied sea zone (this was an optional rule in 2nd Edition).
5. Western Canada no longer borders the Atlantic Ocean.” -
Rule 6: Battleships must be hit twice to be destroyed. I think they repair right away, I’m not entirely certain on the repair part. But the need to hit them twice to kill them, I’m certain of that.

@midnight_reaper Actually, that’s an optional rule that came with the CD-ROM game.
From Krieghund himself: https://www.harrisgamedesign.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1745&sid=f585e1a3616f62d6596a4896609da671

And a file, purporting to have all of the “3.5 edition rules” for Axis and Allies, is available on BoardGameGeek. You tell me how accurate that rule set is.
It does have Two-Hit Battleships listed as optional rules, along with: Paratroop Units, Scorched Earth, No Weapons Development, No New Industrial Complexes, Kamikazes, One Panama Sea Zone, Always Active AA Guns and Submerging Submarines.
But as I don’t know what exactly constitutes the 3rd edition rules, I’m just calling things as I see them.

@midnight_reaper Yeah, it can get a little complicated as third edition rules didn’t come with an actual board. But what I’m basing it off of are Krieghund’s words and the game itself. When you first load the game, the third edition rules are set as default. And two-hit battleships are not part of those default rules. Here is a video as proof, at the 24 second mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKaz_lXxPtw&t=930s

These screenshots get me VERY nostalgic :)
ON-TOPIC:
I do not think many people play with the Third Edition rules for Axis and Allies Classic. But we always played (and play) with the Two-Hit Battelship rule. Needs two hits to be sunk. No repair costs. Will automatically repair after combat.
