Also, I read in the rules that I should uncheck the “use triggers” box in the options menu. Is this a requirement or an optional rule?

the “use triggers” option when turned on (default) means that each nation will have an extra 4 units that can be purchased from the start of the 2nd round
if turned off, you will never get to purchase these 4 units

the default for the tournament is default rules, unless the players want to change it

I wasn’t sure if I should just build ground units and salvage as much of the French navy as possible or put pressure on the English navy.

I also took 1 Fusiliers and 1 Howitzer as casualties for the battle of Novgorod because they were the cheapest. Edit at your leisure.

A hint for Sweden next time:
if you want to try to defend Finnland, transport the general to general to Finnland and build 3 infantry first turn. You can evacuate him anytime and I will get no factory.

I don’t see how it’s possible to evacuate the general from Finland without building up it’s navy, which is costly. Sweden has it’s hands full just defending what it has right now.
