I found the example I was thinking of and it’s specifically using a British destroyer to move into a zone with Japanese transports and then using ANZAC to declare war on Japan which prevented the transports from picking up units in that sea zone. So thats how they got around that niche case where being the aggressor lets you pick up in a hostile sea zone. All the other rules around transports on pp 15, 32-33 say friendly sea zone only.

for reference to what i am talking about, see my game with tyzoq. i made a huge fleet attack this morning with odds to kill his fleet and end up with 5 planes on average. instead he killed everything of mine and survived 2 acc, 3 ftr. battles like THOSE are the ones i specialize in failing at dramatically.

i feel your pain. it’s especially infuriating when almost all of the infantry rolls are 4 or less and the bomber is whiffing away.

naval battles are notorious for zany results… i expect that. it’s the little bitty ones that drive me nuts. makes me wonder how often during the actual war that something really unexpected happened, and ike went, “what the… ? how did that happen?” like in Great Escape:
