My review copy of Axis & Allies Europe 1940 has arrived

    @almashir:

Sorry if this has been answered already, but I had a couple of questions about the pictures of the map and playing pieces.  I noticed on the countersheet with national roundels the British have their normal air force roundels plus 2 Union Jack roundels that seem to be slightly larger.  What are those for?

Also, on South America, just North of Brazil, there are 3 roundels on the map - one British, one French, and one that appears to be Czechoslovakian.  Is that supposed to be a Czech colony???

Bloody hell, don’t you Americans get taught in Geography these dates? That colony is Dutch! (currently the country of Surinam).

    1. You assume he’s American.
    2. Your sentence doesn’t really make sense.

Ya but what the heck do the union jack roundels mean?

my guess is it’s for the IPC chart, to keep track of both UK economies.

  • Yeah, he’s American.  What’s sad is that I probably know more geography than the average American, but I didn’t know that one off the top of my head.  I guess I could have looked it up if I wasn’t so lazy.  The picture of the roundel was small enough I couldn’t see the little orange dot in the center.  Ya know, what’s extra extra super pathetic is that I was actually married in the Netherlands and have a Dutch marriage license   I should have remembered how similar the Dutch and Czech roundels were.

    :-D :-D :-D , no problem m8. I hope you had/have a good marriage.

  • 22 years and 5 kids  :-D  Back when I learned geography Rhodesia and the Republic of Vietnam were still on the maps.

Anyway, the theory someone posted that the Union Jack roundels are for tracking IPC levels seems to make sense.  But why not just use their regular roundels?  Ah well, I guess we’ll find out in a couple of weeks.

  • Cause theres pacific and europe UK incomes.

  • Well, yes.  I get that there are two separate UK incomes.  But, unless these Union Jack roundels are marked with something too small to see (maybe a small “E” on one and a “P” on the other?), they seem to be identical.  So how do you know which one is for which income?  Unless you are using a separate IPC chart for each map.  But that still doesn’t answer the question of why not just use their regular roundels like all the other countries?

  • you use RAF symbol for one and the union jack for the other.

  • Yeah, now that would work.  I guess the second one is just a spare, in case one is eaten by the dog/toddler/vacuum cleaner.

  • It could also be put under an Indian AA gun.

why do you assume he is American?

Because everyone on these types of things are American.

  • Or if for some ungodly mistake UK (pacific) takes tons of territories and goes off the IPC chart.  :-o

  • Wow!  Been busy this weekend, I can’t believe I missed this! :-o

I just noticed now that Africa is completely covered in circle based roundels 8-) (UK, Italy, and France): my color blind brothers-in-law are going to have a heck of a time telling them apart; at least the Italian and French ones!

And as far as Malta goes with it starting empty: UK still goes before Italy so it doesn’t have to remain empty for the Italian turn.  Plus I’m sure it’ll be like Gibraltar in AE in that if the UK leaves it open it’ll be tempting to block them out and stamp out a major annoyance later, but I’ll bet that Italy is going to have their hands full trying to take out the UK in Egypt to the East, take over the French African territories to the West, and whatever they decide to do with the Middle East and Turkey…  Needless to say there’s plenty for them to do with the 2 transports they start with.

So I would say Malta has a good chance of surviving even if it remains empty after UK1, but especially if the UK decides to build an air base first turn and land a fighter or two there.  And if Italy does take it right away, it’ll be at the cost of something else in Africa.

  • Because everyone on these types of things are American.

    get real.

  • @Captain:

Here is a quick, full-board image that I put together using djensen’s map photos. It seems as India will look alright after all.

However I must say that because of the board split, the name of Western Germany is incredibly offset and looks strange in my opinion.

Why does Africa look so damned squished at the bottom? And what happened to South Africa? I can’t seem to see it.

  • There’s two South Africas now apparently. UoSA and WSA.

  • What is Algeria’s IPC value? It’s too white and Sahara-ee for me to tell.

  • It looks like there are several non-neutral territories that have zero IPC value.  I didn’t expect that.

  • I’d be extremely suprised if Algeria was one of those territories, seeing as it was the “main” French colony, but I don’t see an IPC value!!! Does anyone else see it?

  • nope dont see any IPC value.
