Hmm…that italian heavy bomber doesnt seem like the SM 79… and the bomber that comes with AA50 is the same as the japanese bomber…  :?

Well, but that mold looks great but it’s the japanese betty bomber.

It does appear VERY similar to the Japanese G4M.  We’ll have to wait for FMG to confirm which model this is.  Italy did have some lighter bombers with two engines that might be confused for a Betty if you didn’t know the scale (the italian planes that look similar were smaller).  It’s possibly a Fiat CR.25, I guess, but that’s hardly a heavy bomber?  We’ll just have to wait for FMG to confirm that he did his homework.

It’s also possible that the images are switched?  Their Transport/Med bomber is perhaps a Fiat BR.20 which was a widely used bomber while the Fiat CR.25 was a reconnaissance/bomber/officer transport but only 10 were ever made.  Gotta say I’m surprised it’s not one of the many 3 engine options as they were so very Italian.  I’m confused.

    Lets get to the bottom of this before this goes into the mould!  Now we need the communities help!  I don’t think it is a betty bomber… look at the rear tail wings in comparison;

Also the shape of the wings is very different.  More rounded as with other Italian designs.

I think it is a 1940 variant of the BR.20.  If there are any experts out there please assist BR.20bis?

  • FMG,

That is definitely a Betty (see pic below). Notice the small gunner’s station behind the main cockpit.

Bright spot: Your Japanese Betty model is complete  :-)

Try molding the Piaggio P.108 Bombardiere as the heavy bomber. It is 4-engined and a good looking airplane as well:

The rear vertical fin is what makes the figure look most like a G4M Betty.  That and the gunner turret on top.  And the fact that it’s shaped like a cigar.  The Transport/Medium Bomber has the correct BR.20 rear wing configuration.  I can’t find any images of a BR.20 that didn’t have twin vertical fins in back.

This is what this plane was supposed to be I think!?

It was a variation of the B.20 late war.

You may be correct here!  (At least we will have our bomber complete for Japan!)

That’s a CANT Z.1018.  Only 15 were built.  That’s definately not a variation of the B.20, and wasn’t particularly successful, even before the armistice.

Keep that one for the japanese bomber and use the Savoia Marchetti SM 79 sparviero for the italian bomber. It is easy to recognize and was an icon of the regia aeronautica as it was largely used.

If not, use as a model an italian heavy bomber with 4 engines.

Piaggio P.108 Bombardiere this one is nice, large and has 4 engines - heavy bomber.

What about a better Italian Transport?  We have a B.20 Bomber sculpt already.  I used it as the transport as my research showed that there was a troop transport /Air drop variation?

Any ideas about a better ITALIAN Transport?

If possible provide a technical image like that above (Good for sculptor)

  • FMG,

Read the Wikipedia article about the P.108 - it mentions that most were converted to use as air transports, and even the Luftwaffe used them as such.

Thank you for your help.  My concern is that the P.108 is for engine and bigger than the B.20.  We can’t have an air transport that is bigger than the bomber!

Maybe we can keep the B.20 as the Bomber/transport and build the P.180?  What do you think?

Can anyone find me a technical drawing of this aircraft?

The italian transport is fine. As for the italian heavy bomber… you cant go wrong with the Savoia Marchetti SM 79, it was the most used and recognized easily. I found drawings of the two, the SM 79 and the piaggio p-108.

  • Yeah, My vote is to keep the B.20 as the transport as well.

Your call on the heavy bomber - I prefer the P.108 for the 4 engine config.

    THANK YOU!!!

Lets hear what others think.  I like the four engine bomber…  it will be easily recognizable on the board.

For what it’s worth, I prefer the SM79, as the shape and tri rotor config is more uniquely Italian and it was their primary bomber.  It’s not technically a heavy bomber, but the P.108 never got out of it’s teething period and the Italians were out of the war before it could really be used.  And considering the P.108 was inferior to a B17 is pretty much every way, it hardly could be called a heavy bomber.

If each power nation ends up with a 4 engine bomber I don’t see how it’s all that unique other than nation color.  Not to mention that the Italians will probably NEVER get “heavy bomber” tech, so why make a figure indicative of a technology they didn’t come close to acquiring in the war, or in a game?

Which models were used to design the italian trucks and halftracks?  Really looking forward to see those beauties!  :-D

These are almost done!  Should have images next week!  …and the Italian sub I am told.

I like the SM79 also…  it has a very unique look just like the 202 Fogalore Fighter

My vote goes to the SM79 as heavy bomber
