For ships we always have all ships horizontally. Until they move and we place them vertically. This is really helpful with countries like Japan. Good to see what transports already moved , what subs have moved etc. Even when we don’t move ships in non combat, we place them vertically, so we know that’s the plan (to not move them). Round two is the same, but then all ships are placed horizontally again. Really simple, but really helpful.

RE: Was the Taranto raid overlooked?
I agree with Taamvan. Doing Taranto comes with a high price for England. It loses its fleet, which also could have been used to help out India or retreat behind Suez and wait for a nice opportunity to kill off Italians at a different time.
It also means Sealion is more viable. You have to get most planes into the fight, which aren’t there to save Britain, if G does Sealion.
It’s not a no-brainer to me, although most of the time I do it. It also depends on G1 buys. If there are TT’s bought, I reconsider. If there are German fighters in Italy, I think twice. If Russia gets attacked G1 I almost guarantee to do Taranto, etc. -
RE: Players in Eindhoven, Netherlands
Hey! I am one of the Dutchies Wittman is talking about. I, however, live in Zaanstad. That’s really far away from Eindhoven, unfortunately. One guy from our group lives in Bodegraven, which is considerably closer to you guys. He is not on this frum, so I could give him your information?
Anyone from Noord Holland, or closeby? I live a fifteen minutes drive from Amsterdam, for instance.

RE: How to best deal with Italy
The only problem I usually have by using that TT for taking a DEI Island is that in round two that TT is lost and the two inf you stationed there are but a marginal headache for Japan.

RE: German Sub Opener
As Germany I help out Italy by taking out that cruiser rather then taking out the DD and TT off the coast of Canada. Or if I feel Lucky I do both with about 50-50 odds.

RE: How to best deal with Italy
I also sometimes use India forces to kill off Italians in Africa. It´s ofcourse a one time action. The rest of Indian Brits are needed against Japan. But I mostly make up for that by building an IC in Persia to help out India with European Brits.
I also sometimes use my Indians to transport units straight into Persia so I can build an IC there UK2.

RE: Any need for French units beyond the setup?
There was one game where my French units were literally essential in winning. The Battle of France cost the German player all but his tanks. The French DD and Cruiser killed its Italian attackers, survived, and saved a British fleet next to Gibraltar, so that UK could build an airbase there, which forever denied Italy its NO´s. The DD by Africa turns later could block a Japanese fleet from invading India, which after that never got captured.

RE: THE FIRST BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Hopefully I can join one of the next ones! And perhaps followed by one in my country, called Market Garden (or Fall Gelb, depending on which side you play).

RE: 100 Years since the Act that Sparked the Great War
A couple of friends and I are organizing a 1914 tournament. Not on jst one day, but numerous days, starting June 28. Four players at a time, 2 vs 2. We want every player to rotate countries, so that he has played every country.
We are not sure yet how to calculate points. Maybe a point for every enemy country forced into political collapse, or something. -
RE: Hall of Shame - tales of the worst dice ever
I remember a game of the classic Pacific A&A. In the first round, all allies only score hits in the defense on a 1. So as Japan you keep in mind with every attack that you will lose about one in six of your units. My opponent had a 1 about 50% on all his rolls. Especially on crucial ones, where I lost expensive units or didn’t take an island, so my transport could be killed the next turn by an allied fighter which could land on the non-occupied island!
It was maybe about 10 years ago, but that same opponent keeps reminding me about it when he has a handful of dice and needs 1’s. Like for mines in 1914 or radar in Global.

RE: Still Playin?
Since the tournament rules exist I’ve been playing with them. I think about 20 games since last year.
Only house rule we have is an impassable Switzerland.
I think the rules are quite good as they are now. If there ever is going to be a 2nd edition I think I will buy it anyway. I loe this game. Some friends of mine like it even more then ‘regular’ A&A. I think it is quite different from Global, but evenly fun.
I hope Larry will make more games with a different theme then WW1. Napoleonic theme for example. Or Imperialism. Or Cold War. -
RE: Cavalry Unit
Horses:
Cost 1 IPC
No combat value
Every horse unit gives an infantry +1 movement.
Can be withdrawn from contested area to bring in more inf from far away. -
RE: Balancing 1914
I suggested a rule once concerning limited India builds:
India can build four units (IPC worth of India)
This can be increased by +1 for conquering Afghanistan and +2 by conquering Persia. This way it isn’t four builds from the start and Britain really has to do something to get those builds and it will be ultimately limited to 7 builds. -
Pointsystem for tournament
My group is planning a tournament for 2014. We want 8 players (we need only one more player) and want to play two games simultaniously. And then four games (in two days) and that every player has one go with each set of countries.
We don’t want a simple win or lose point, but want a pointsystem for different types of achievements. Both parties score points for:
Not having a political collapse with your countries
Conquered enemy capitals
Being on the winning side
Winning in a certain round (eg 1 point for round ten, 2 points for round 9, etc)
Doubling your start IPC?
Having all original territory?
EtcAny ideas and suggestions?

RE: Some advices for Willy, Franz and Mehmed please!!
Since the PTR the Centrals have won about 50% of our games, and we also have an impassable Switzerland. We don’t have the Italy rule however.
My strategy as Centrals is going after Italy from the start with as much as possible. But considering you dont do that, I have to tell you about my friends strats.
One of my friends buys quite a lot of ships. There are certain advantages, but I wouldnt do it too much. I tend to buy a sub with GE and AH every turn. That way every ally has to consider those subs. They are never really free to move whatever whereever without expensive escorts. And sometimes you can attack a small groups of ships which messes their plans of follow-ups, etc.
Another thing I do is keeping forces occupied by sending their unit count plus one to it. Just so you are sure that those, for example, four units in a Russian province are pinned down and the territory contested. This I do with just inf, which makes it quite expensive, as they don’t do much harm themselves, but this way you cut their supply lines and get one step closer to an economic collapse.

RE: The New Game On The Block
I don’t understand either. I do, however, buy a sub every turn for Germany and most of the times for AH. This helps allied spending on defensive ships for their transports and it makes the Russia lifeline a lot more difficult for them.
But I can’t imagine me buying more ships for the CP against an experienced opponent. Sometimes, with an inexperienced opponent, i buy battleships for Germany. And even then, against inexperienced players, I gain very little with those ships and never, ever gain supremacy over the Atlantic.
