My buddy Todd wrote this up for our website. I’m copying and pasting here….
* Game: Axis & Allies Europe 1940
* Players: Joe (Germany & Italy) Todd (Russia & France) Adam (England & United States)
* Winner: Allies
The game was won by the Allies on Turn 5 when Germany failed to take back Norway from a joint British/American force. Adam left after turn 1 and Todd continued on playing all of the Allies. Italy had taken Egypt and the North African coast by turn 4 and was going to be driving into the Middle East and Germany was at the gates of Moscow and had taken Leningrad. Britain took Norway with a troop and 2 tanks and a huge navy consisting of 2 Aircraft Carriers, 2 Fighters, 2 Tac Bombers, 2 Battleships, 3 Cruisers, 3 Destroyers, 4 Transports. By taking Norway from Germany he lost 5 IPC’s for not getting the Swedish Iron Ore shipment and another 5 IPC’s for not holding all of Poland-Norway-Denmark-Holland/Belgium-and all 3 of the French home territories at once. Including the 3 IPC’s for Norway and the Convoy zone next to Norway that as long as there is no Axis warship present in Sea Zone 125 and Russia controls Archangel and no Allied units in any original Russian territories Russia gets 5 extra IPC’s. That is an 18 IPC swing to the Allies just for holding Norway!!! Britain took Norway on turn 3 and Joe drove ever deeper in Russia and said he would take Norway the next turn and husbanded his forces for an attack on turn 5. But the Americans landed 4 transports full of 4 tanks and 4 Infantry and 2 Fighter planes and a bomber in Norway on turn 4 as well as Britain bringing up more stuff from England and flying up more Fighters to protect the Major Factory that England built in Norway on turn 4 to the AMAZEMENT to the Axis player! Germany was fixated with Norway and built 2 Aircraft Carriers and other units to invade Norway which he lost and Norway still had plenty of forces left and Joe and the Axis capitulated on Turn 5! Joe wishes he had ignored the Allied Norway Gambit and had kept driving on Moscow but the Russians had stopped the southerly and middle drives and just the turn before had driven the Nazi thugs back away from Moscow and had taken Bessarabia and was next to the Minor Factory in Romania that Joe had built. After Italy had taken Egypt and built a minor factory there they had driven deep into Africa and were a couple of turns from threatening the Minor Factory in South Africa. This being the first game we both saw mistakes made by both sides and opportunities for games in the future! The game took from 3 p.m. to around 10 p.m. Brian Favereaux came down late and was going to take the Americans and French but Joe capitulated just before he could play but got to see a lot of the new rules and moves that will certainly help him in his first game this Sunday! A lot of fun was had by all!
