Game Just Crashes

I have been a long time fan of the game and just purchased the game for 10 bucks, but I can’t seem to get it to work. It seems like the first combat sequence it just crashes. I applied the 1.33 patch and have the same problem!!!
any assistance would be appreciated.

I think it is a direct x issue, I am running v8.x and the game wants to install 5.x has anyone had a similar problem?
if so how did you work around it?

Random crashes do happen a lot in A&A (to the dread of players everywhere) at any particular moment. I might help if you reinstall A&A or close all programs before running A&A.
Oh yeah, Direct issues might help too. Check the troubleshooting file.
