I had to reply here, because I remember all the mistakes that me and my friends made the first few times we played…
In the beginning we also thought it was free for all. And, because the first few times we played we didn’t have the rulebook (in classic), we thought that the dice were for the movement, so we would move our units with the dice. We even bought units, and then sold them and bought them in another place…

Then, we learned how to play better, but we still made big mistakes. We made kamikazee attacks with planes, or we allowed them to land anywhere. We landed Bombers on carriers. We mixed land and water battles… It was so mixed up…!

USA: mechanized infantry or chinese divisions.
UK: Radar or French Resistance
Russia: Railroad or Lend-Lease
Germany: Panzerblitz
Japan: Tokyo Express or Lightning Assaults.

I’ve had both experiences with the U.S.

i’ve gotten my Pearl fleet killed, most of the times, on J1, and have concentrated mainly on Germany.
But on one game, not a long time ago, I was playing KGF, and my Pearl fleet was not attacked on J1. Japan was concentrating on mainland, and was almost reaching Moscow, to kill Russia and help Germany. In one or two turns I used my still alive Pearl fleet, and built a few trannies/battleship/destroyer, etc. and went up through Alaska. This got Japan of guard, and the Japan player had to stall it’s attack on Russia for a few turns, and reinforce Manchuria/Japan, which were the main points that I could attack. Eventually, with no help, Germany got smashed, and Russia survived, and after that, it was only downfall for the Axis.
My Pearl fleet cost Japan the game.

No one can hate Risk, cmon! its the classic strategy board game! Although A&A is a thousand times better, no doubt in that.

Personally, I’ve never played with bids, and every time the Axis give a pretty good fight, and have won many times. The times i’ve played w/ my friends, it’s been about 50/50 between Allies and Axis victories. I thought that with bids, the only difference that would happen would be in the german/russian front. It had never occured to be to get 3Trannies + an IC. I just’ hadn’t thought of it.

Does anyone else place any other use to the axis with the bid other than a) units in ukraine, b) unit(s) in Libya c) units in WRussia d) 1ipc Japan… ?

I’ve played much more w/ the Allies than with Germany, but the few times that I have played with Germany, I’ve done SBR only once or twice. I only do it if I realize that there is nothing else to do with my bomber. Generally, if Japan is doing well going up Russia’s back, I bomb Moscow, so Russia will have less and less cash every time. I do it if I can, but it’s not a MUST for me.

If they’ve never played the game, I would say that they’ll play just like any other person that has never played the game. They would try to make strategies, but b/c of never playing before, and not knowing the game mechanics well, they may fail. I don’t think it will go the way the real war went. They are just gonna see what is the best thing they can do with the units and money they are given.
