RE: Transforming spring 1942 into 1941 questions
Our group used to play Global when we had the time and 1942.2 when we didn’t have time for Global… now we pretty much just play AA50 all the time, as it’s a happy medium between the two and well balanced.
1941 is intentionally an introduction to the game and priced to not be a serious commitment. I’d find it hard to commit to playing 1941 long-term… its just not as fun with the incredibly ham-stringed IPC budget of all nations.

RE: Transforming spring 1942 into 1941 questions
As to why, well, I want a short game which I can introduce to my kids.
Even a revised game will go on for a long time.
I heard 41 plays a lot faster.
Therefore, consider it a gateway to longer versions if it is a hit.
I believe that was its intended purpose anyway. That’s all true… 1941 is a shorter game and an introduction to the series that plays faster (I think the biggest problem with 1941 though is there’s so little money, there’s practically nothing to buy every turn… but I guess that’s why it plays faster).
Pieces are sorted, double everything of the original 1941, just in case.
I’m now going over the map to renumber the IPC values in the 1942 1st ed. map.Well if you DOUBLE the number of units that 1941 comes with, you’ll almost have enough to play 1941~! Lol… little joke there… another famous thing about 1941 is that it comes with so few units, its barely enough for initial setup!
How are you renumbering the 1942 map… are you literally making pen and ink style changes, or are you doing something fancy? I’m interested how you go about doing this (just from a “i’m bored and curious” aspect).

RE: Favorite Axis and Allies version
Meh, poll missing too many options… includes three out of print variants that were never popular, but doesn’t include either of the out of print popular versions (A&A Classic and Revised), and if you went with current in-print versions, he’s missing 1942 and 1914… also could have just said “Global” instead of spelling out both 1940 versions together.
If you make a.poll on favorite version that includes out of print, please list all the out of print versions. … same if you’re going to list in print versions…
Too many missing options to get a good vote sample! (Just saying, very incomplete list).

RE: Transforming spring 1942 into 1941 questions
I’m going to point at the large elephant in the room that everyone is ignoring… why do you want 1941 over 1942?
IMHO, 1942 (either edition) is a superior game to 1941… there’s just more of everything in 1942 vs 1941.
Having said that, sometimes that’s the only appeal of 1941 vs any other game in the A&A franchise. Less units, less income, less territories, less strategic options, less paths to victory… LESS PLAYING TIME… the latter is about the only thing I can think of that might make 1941 more appealing than 1942.
As for the steps to convert 1942 to 1941… you already have more than enough pieces, the rules are easy to print up or look at online… the only issue is the map… and there’s the sticking point… it would cost more to print the 1941 map (short of making a really poor quality map) than it would cost to just buy it in the store new.
Personally, I don’t recommend 1941 to A&A veterans unless you’re looking for a very quick game or just want the unique sculpts… I only recommend 1941 to new players to the franchise… if you really want 1941, it’s probably just cheaper to buy it than to try and print a 1941 map.

RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)
Ya, talking about Canada’s roundel on the AA50 map thread… with all due respect to our Canadian friends, in AA50, Canada is just another UK territory, there’s not even an ANZAC power in AA50.
It’d be like discussing Italy’s roundel on a map thread dedicated to the 1941 map… where Italy is just another German territory.
Our group is so happy with the re-release of AA50 though… we did play and enjoy Global, but it was just a huge time commitment that some in our group struggled with… we enjoy the quicker pace of AA50 and the fact Italy is it’s own power (we have one guy in our group who even loves to play Italy). There’s things I miss about Global, but we just seem to get the group together more often after switching to AA50.
I digress… can’t wait to see the AA50 map updated with Fasces roundels for Italy.

@SS:
@Nowhere:
I really like your map Imperious!
I have this map in 3 x 6 f. I dont know why you just dont print this one up. It has your roundels you want. If you dont like the Canada-China territories just put Canada-China or Japan roundels on map. Just sayin.
Map overload… if i’m not mistaken, IL has multiple versions of the AA50 map, and (as I recall), the one with the changed roundels is a solid color nations map?!? While the one using the more “textured” map (for lack of a better word) that IL has are the original OOB roundels? I dunno, I remember seeing the different roundels on IL’s map but there was a reason I didn’t go with it, thought it was the solid colors.
To be honest, Italy is a bigger sticking point with me than Germany, and to that end…
Long story short, I will create a fasces version of the map :-D
Hooray!
–----
I’m still debating if I will modify the German emblem or not on my own end… as it’s a PNG/JPG, it shouldn’t be too hard to modify 6 roundels… i’m just lazy and not as firm on changing Germany as I am on Italy.

RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)
Awesome update… so is the Italian (fasces) roundel version pending, or are we on our own for that one?
Please know that the German roundel is the correct one from an airplane roundel perspective. If you want to display the flag of Germany during the war you’re right about the change.
As mentioned in one of my earlier posts I will create a version with the correct Italian roundel (the black and white one), but personally I don’t feel much for adding the German flag on the board… Furthermore it’s the flag and in my opinion you should change the other nations to their flags as well and it’s easy enough to add to my map file yourself.
Just a quick shout-out here… the Japanese “roundel” in the game IS the Japanese flag, NOT their Roundel… but nobody complains of the Japanese Flag being used in game while the others are roundels… minor point of contention… the German roundel is the roundel, but if it were changed to their flag, it would NOT be the first such occurrence in the game, since the OOB map already has a major axis power flag in place of a roundel.
In any case, no biggie… my main point of contention is the Italian/Iranian roundel… shouldn’t be there for Axis Italy in any way shape or form… as you correctly mentioned earlier, it should be the fasces… that’s the only roundel i’m really wishing were changed on the map. Having Iran’s roundel for Italy is really off-putting.

RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)
Any chance when you’re done updating the changes to the AA50 map you can pop out a 2nd version with optional corrected roundels for Germany and Italy? It always bothered me they removed the historical emblems those countries used for more PC ones, all the while, we can get the correct roundel control markers from HBG (ty HBG)… I would just love to have my roundels (that our group already has and uses) to actually match what’s on the board… I mean not only did they remove the Fascist Italy roundel, but they replaced Italy’s roundel with Iran’s roundel… how annoying!
Anyways, if it’s possible to have these on a 2nd map option… or perhaps at least make a descent to-scale transparent background PNG with the correct roundel so we can pop it on there ourselves before taking it to the print shop?
Something like what HBG uses would be awesome (if you could be so kind). Our group can’t be the only one that uses these roundels from HBG.
P.S.
I don’t know your country of origin, so if you’re from Germany, you don’t have to explain German law, just pretend I didn’t even ask, I can respect that. -
RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)
That should be no problem, but please wait a few more days for a new file to be released as I’m doing some rework on the colours and brightness of the map. As well as some other small changes that YG asked me to do.
No problem waiting… though you might want to post your new map in the AA50 forum instead of customizations (just make sure to announce it in this thread to)…
By all means, i’ll be waiting.

RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)
@Nowhere:
Has anyone actually printed this map? Maybe its just me, i dunno, but it seems subdued/pixelated compared to the Adobe Maps of Dedo and Imperious… but i could totally be off base or maybe i need glasses?
At what size do you want to print the file? As per my last response you should be fine around 80 inch wide. But you can easily make a test print of a small portion of the map at the number of pixels per inch you want to go for to see the effects of enlarging the file.
Let me know if it helps if I create a few files of different enlargements that are small enough to print on a standard A4 or Letter page. Then you can see for yourself. Do know that colors will always differ between your home prints and professional print equipment.
Due to the limited playing surface we have, we’re looking only to print a map roughly 57" [wide], maintaining aspect ratio… we’d take it to a professional printer for either show floor or outdoor banner vinyl.
Simply looking for something as bright and clear as the OOB map would be fine (but printed so we can roll it up and have a seemless gameplay experience).
Would your map work for this, or would we need something altered or a different map alltogether?

But you know my map redo is 100% vector, no image loss at any scale!
I really like your map Imperious!

RE: Tjoek's A&A Anniversary OOB Map file (Updated March 23rd)
I guess what i’m asking is this file going to give you a basically perfect reproduction of the OOB map, just on your material/size of your choice without looking pixilated or color saturated/faded?
YG, i’m really curious to see your results and/or modifications.
I’ve played every version of A&A from Classic to 1941 through Global… out of all, (for me and my friends) we’ve settled on Anniversary as our game of choice… not that we don’t like Global (we do), it just takes up too much of the time we’re willing to give and we all enjoy the balance of Anniversary for both gameplay and time investment… having said that, we are looking to print the best possible map for our group… and we’re all debating on which one is the best (we can’t decide)… we like the work of Imperious and Dedo, as well as possibly going with a reprint of the OOB map such as on here… we just need a nice bigger map than OOB… so we’re taking our time to find THE PERFECT map for us, and hoping to see results of what other people have chosen for AA50.

RE: Thinking of 1942.2 buy?
This thread is from early 2017, when Anniversary hadn’t been reprinted yet.
Oh, i missed the fact that someone brought the thread back from the dead, my bad.

RE: Thinking of 1942.2 buy?
I see a question about if he should buy 1942.2 and everyone jumps in and tells him to buy Global.
1942 and Global are completely different animals… it’s like if I had a Camaro and asked if I should keep it or get a Firebird (assuming they still existed in production) and everyone chimed in that I should just buy a Lambrogheni… whoa, whoa, whao, completely different thing here.
Imho, 1942 to 1942.2 is mostly about updated sculpts and a few map changes, but the difference isn’t huge… really you just need to ask yourself if the cost is worth it to you for very minor changes (to some it would be).
If you’re looking for a different gaming experience, sure there is Global, which is a huge step up in complexity, map size and most of all, time commitment… go for it if that’s your thing, but it’s a lot different than the scale and time commitment of 1942… there is a middle ground upgrade that is more involved than 1942 but less than Global and that’s Anniversary edition which I’m surprised nobody mentioned as an option… I might recommend that as your choice if you want something similar to 1942 but not as drastic a change as Global.

RE: What scale are the units ?
The ships aren’t even in scale to themselves in the game… the Russian Battleship (I forget the name, but its a WW1 dreadnought) is the same length and size as the American battleship (Iowa class)… if they were at the same scale, the Iowa would dwarf the Russian dreadnought… the battleship scales are all over the map, country by country and are not consistent (the same is true for tanks as a Japanese Type 95 is just as big as a German Tiger tank)… Marc is quoting ballpark averages, but about the only units truely on a consistent scale are the infantry (except the ANZAC goliaths)… tanks and battleships are especially on varying scales country by country.

RE: Best Box Art
This makes me want to re-watch Das Boot… a German film staring Germans about Germans in WWII… there’s got to be some swastikas in there, and if so, how’d they get that bye the censors… it’s certainly not a documentary (any more than Axis & Allies is). Did Saving Private Ryan not show in Germany… pretty sure there’s swastikas there too. I understand the basic meaning of the German law… they don’t want them back in power, marching in the streets, spreading pamphlets, etc… but some things seem a bit silly, like banning swastikas in a board game with no political message to promote, or a movie like Saving Private Ryan, which surely isn’t pro-Nazi in any way.

RE: Anniversary Map?
@Imperious:
Phone number (818) 784-9846 ask for Ramon tell them to print with ‘Showfloor’… what is it?
Its a printable flooring material used by plays, film, and dance halls. It does not wrinkle and it wont stain and much better than roll ups. And roll ups are something i have been using since 2004. This is a step up and its not really more expensive
I really appreciate the info… so if I went that route, I can also roll it up and store it in a maptube (cylindrical) case? That’s what I do with my other printed maps… i know you mentioned roll ups, but i gotta make darn sure we’re both talking about the same thing here… i’m very interested in doing exactly what you’re talking about if I can roll that sucker up when not in use.
Once again IL, thanks for that info!

RE: Do we need an AA50 2nd edition?
One that is more consistent with the Global 2nd edition rule set? Ideally these games would be self-consistent with as many core rules the same as possible, but that build on the simpler versions.
Maybe there is one in the works, but likely will be a few years before it is released.
Need and want are two different things… do we “need” AA50 2ndEd? Not really… do we “want” AA50 2ndEd? Maybe…
As others have stated, since it’s really mostly just a rules difference, if you’re really wanting it that bad, by all means, house-rule it in… nothing can stop you but yourself… perhaps the biggest rules difference is AAA and perhaps some unit costs.
As for WotC and/or AH making the “official” release of AA50 2ndEd… I’d dare say you’ll become a very old hermit waiting for that to happen, especially since some 9 years after the release AA50, they came out with little more than a reprint (though I and others were glad for a reprint)… if they wanted to do a AA50 rules rewrite, they just missed the boat, and it’d probably be another 10 years or so before they were to get the itch to do it again (if ever).
