do you need to have a partner for this or will teams be randomly assigned?

RE: Vegas G40 "Showdown in the Desert" 2018
@Screaming:
If the Allied Powers control the Philippines for the entire game, when does The United States get their FOW research roll?
i don’t think they’d get a FoW in that case they’d just get an extra point at the end of the game if phillipines had never been taken

RE: Why not Egypt first?
going egypt first as axis can be fun, i usually do a variation of this if italy still has the majority of their fleet on their first turn. With the current meta though usually most of the italian fleet plus most of the italian ground forces in africa are gone by the time italy goes. A decent strat to have in mind as a reactive strategy based on how the first turn goes… i’ve had italian money up to like 45/turn or more once when the allies left them alone on turn one, i gave italy egypt and the middle east and they were scary lol. Granted this was against inexperienced allied players so not the best test of the strat :P

RE: A&A G40 Con 2018 Vegas
sounds fun, will you be playing OOB or using the YG Victory tokens & timed tournament rules?
-
RE: Re: YG's G40 Invitational - Comments
@Baron:
I hope you will give us feedback of people about victory tokens.
IMO, it is a great thing to actually get so many people playing along and agreeing to follow what was basically a houserule. And you bring a deck to enhanced the experience.
Nice job.
Mission accomplish, hope you will get a few cooldown moments to make post-mortems and enjoy what you have created and manage to settle.yeah i’m interested to see people’s opinions of these as well, i’ve been holding off buying them as a few of my regular players in my own games aren’t fans of house rules. Anything I can use to sell them on the idea if they worked well and it sounds like they did ;)

wish i could have budgeted a trip to Toronto in, glad your guys’ event went well!! Any chance of this being an annual thing or is this a one-off? I was with you guys in spirit, i ran a global A&A table at a convention here in Calgary on Saturday ;) It was surprising how many people walked up to the table and said “i didnt even know you could do that with europe and pacific”.
hopefully this tourney becomes an annual thing so i can budget for a trip sometime!

RE: Germany, a plan for victory in Europe
I like to get up to 5 transports set up in 112 or 113 on turn 2 and then build alot of fast movers (tanks/bombers) The reason I like 5 transports is you can build 5inf/art in germany and land those in either lenningrad OR the UK(london or scotland) from 113. that threat coupled with bomber buys keeps the UK spending money on london instead of africa. If italy is lucky enough to have a MED fleet that can spell disaster for allies, and could allow you to mop up northern africa with italy. my typical cookie cutter build (it varies but this is generally what i do as germany)
G1: carrier/sub/destoyer, strafe yugoslavia and position forces in poland & Romania. Try to retreat battleship in 110 to 112 if possible, hoping UK scrambles into 110 and you can pick off a plane or two lose a plane or two if you have to in order to retreat the battleship.
G2: build 4 transports into 113 5 inf 5 art on berlin, 1 tank 1 mech on west germany. total buy is 70IPC which you should have.
reposition 112 fleet to 113 and clear out any remaining UK ships with planes. DOW on Russia, push in baltic states and clear their navy out of 114 or 115(wherever he has it) set up italy can openers.G3 if the UK called your bluff and didnt put any money into london well… check the odds you may actually be in a position to do some damage and sack it by G4 or 5, i’ve had success with landing 10 units in scotland G3 which the UK can’t afford to deal with, plus put 20 damage on their factory. This will allow you to hit london with 20 troops and all your planes on G4, i’ve only had the opportunity to do that once and it worked… weak UK player to be honest. Otherwise land your navy into 115. you’ll now be able to build 5 inf 5 art every turn on Berlin and shuck them into lenningrad, while dropping tanks on lennigrad factory or bombers back in west germany to throw at any fledgling UK fleets. Push forward in the south and take ukraine factory as fast as possible.
from here on out i mix in a few bombers here and there and just steamroll into moscow if the UK doesn’t land planes to defend, which works against weaker allied players. Otherwise I just hold the line at two russian factories take as much russian money as possible(caucus area) while drawing allied money away from japan. Every game i’ve played lately italy always gets creamed with taranto raid and crumbles in africa/med by turn 4 or so… i typically just make fast movers in northern italy the first few turns to send to the russian fight.

RE: Grasshopper's G40 Invitational (OLD THREAD)
Hey this is Billthecanuck from youtube. Are there any good hotels near the convention you would recommend? My knowledge of Toronto is walking between terminals at the airport :P Also I just noticed that this is the same weekend as the Calgary boardgaming convention: Fallcon. tough decision as i usually go to that every year.

RE: Game length issues
Here’s a little something I do, that I’ve found really helps to shave a few minutes off every turn.
It might seem simple, but you’d be surprised how much time can be spent digging and returning pieces to their trays, if you don’t have a good system in place…http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=35904.msg1411574#msg1411574
You can see an example image in there at the bottom using 1942.2 but I adopt the same system in G40. Once I started doing this, I never went back. Now I’m a big proponent of grouping by shape, and trusting in color differentiation for easy recognition, rather than the other way round. Hard habit to break, for the OCD sculpt collector, but it works. Even chainsmoking degenerates like me can make the extra effort to be better orgnaized haha.
Also, like others have mentioned before and elsewhere too, my group separates combat movement, and combat proper with the purchase phase. So the phases like this…
repair, combat movement, purchase, combat, non com, placement, collect.
If you want to pick up the pace it’s highly effective for focusing your players. It doesn’t change anything compared to the standard phase order of “purchase, combat movement, combat proper” other than the speed with which your players will make decisions.interesting, i like the idea of sorting by unit type instead of faction, i may toy around with that in a smaller version to see how it feels before doing it with the G40 units (it’d be a huge pain to re-sort them again after, lol)

RE: Game length issues
yeah i think simultaneous turns could help speed up the game, maybe we’ll give that a try for early turns next time. Especially when the nation taking a turn can’t do combat (IE russia & US the first few turns generally) problem is we’re pretty competitive and don’t like to give the opponent any information they shouldn’t have when they’re making a decision, even a small one… we also like to bluff…
IE on anzac/french turn on turn 1 our german player would start stacking infantry & tanks outside his box for his “Buy” then when it comes to his turn after anzac/french are done their turns he drops them all back in his box and drops transports instead… with concurrent turns that kind of bluff becomes harder to pull off. It’s really not going to affect the anzac or french turns, but it’s also a fun part of the live game ;)

RE: Game length issues
yeah i’m not a huge fan of playing tripleA, tried a few times but I find i overlook things that i’d see more obviously on the table.
20 hours sounds about on par with our group to finish a game, i’d say we’ve played 7 or 8 games of global over the past few years we usually wrap around turn 7 or 8 over the course of 2 days. But we also talk alot on each turn (strategy & taunting) so that definitely adds to the game time.
-
RE: Game length issues
what turn do you guys end the first game at? 2 games in 12 hours seems a bit fast to me.
-
Game length issues
I’m curious if you guys have any issues with turns taking long, mostly in the early game.
For example we started a game on friday at about 5pm (maybe a little later as we were catching up and eating pizza when we started, I had pre-set the game up the night before so no setup time) We ended at 4am saturday morning and had only managed to finish 4 turns. To me that seems pretty slow to only be 4 turns in at the 11 hour mark. to be fair by the 6th-7th hour mark we’re all pretty drunk but still… seems long :P
The game is still set-up and we’re returning to it next friday but does that length of time seem normal to you? We don’t play often plus the allies are basically all being played jointly by 2 players, so they discuss options alot, where the 2 axis players basically do their moves then ask the teammate to double check anything obvious they’re missing before ending combat movement. Axis turns seem to go alot faster than allied turns for us(exception being the first German turn really)
We also allow teams to ask for 5 minutes alone with the table if they need, allows us to refill drinks / go outside for a few mins, however every time one team does that the other team gets to do it in return at any later point in the game before they’re allowed to do it again.
