WEIRD!!

Did you know . . .
It sounds far-fetched these days, but as recently as the 1920s, the director of Military Operations and Intelligence at Canadian army headquarters drafted a plan calling for such a tactic.James Sutherland “Buster” Brown had joined the army in 1906. He served overseas in World War I and in the 20s took up the director’s post where he drafted Defence Scheme Number 1. Under the plan, Canadian mobile columns would strike southward into the U.S. to capture such “key” bases as Seattle and Minneapolis. This would stall the American army from moving northward and allow time for the British army to arrive and help Canada.
Brown was descended from Loyalists and was described as “deeply suspicious” of Americans. Although few people, including soldiers, took the scheme seriously and Brown was later dismissed from his post, Canada had long had a fear of American invasion throughout the 19th century and up to World War I. And according to one historian, the Americans had a hypothetical plan for conquering Canada in the 20s as well. It was called the U.S. Army’s Strategic Plan Red.
- i gotta’ admit, i almost bust a gut reading this. Like we could deal with having that many Americans living in our country . . . . :D

lol :P

Seems to me that Michigan is cold enough, I don’t see why we’d want to go any farther north! JK  I could see an amphibious flanking manouvre to the south on Canada’s part with intentions of taking Florida though! JK

I have served in the military(Nam). I’ve spoken with high ranking officers who now are retired. Some are serving their country in positions of power in England, Germany, and The Pentagon. I’ve heard snippets of many conversations and participated in a few regarding an odd fact…
Great Britain and the United States signed a treaty during WWI. I heard it referred to as thr Treaty of Nova Scotia and the Antigone Treaty(named after were it was signed, I think). In the treaty GB sold Canada to the US for supplies and support to win the war. There were three copies of the treaty. One was sent to England on a steamer. The steamer sent out a distress signal, but no sign of her was found. The vessel was presumed sunk in the Atlantic. That part of the story was always the same. A second copy was sent to the Canadian authorities. It ‘never’ arrived. The last copy was sent to Washington, D.C. via train. The train wrecked in the ‘boonies’ of New Brunswick(now, there’s a redundancy. if ever I heard one) and the copy burned up. Each copy had a courier. Only one courier’s body was recovered and identified(from the train wreck in NB). No trace of the other two couriers was ever found.
Personally, I’ve always considered Canada’s relationship with the US to be like Taiwan’s relationship with China. Just a wayward brother. Besides, we don’t want to waste our time or $ invading Canada(one of the generals always joked, "…20 miles, 24 hours, and Canada is 10 more stars on ‘Old Glory’[he had the Old Glory part wrong, but I think you get the drift]). If we really wanted it we’d just stop buying their goods(I believe we are their largest trading partner) :P . - Xi

We will eventually own Canda, just as Taiwan will eventually own (part of) China.
By the way, in the war of 1812 we actually captured Montreal and burned the Parliament building down. Thats why they burned the white house.
If we had manged to capture either Quebec or Toronto, I can’t remember which, we would now own Canada. Sadly the Candians held out and we were really cold so we ran away. A glorious chapter of American history.
-
Are you thinking of the American Revolution? And it was Quebec. Benedict Arnold failed in his assault on Quebec, but stayed in Montreal over a year looking for a second chance.
-
Actually YB, i believe that if the British were better negotiators, close to 1/3 of America would belong to Canada including the Ohio valley. The British/Canadian forces had occupied much of the US under Wellington (who had just come over after defeating Napoleon to replace the recently departed Canadian General (who’s name escapes me, but was brilliant apparently)).
Also the capital was Ottawa, and it was hidden for pricisely the reason of avoiding being sacked by the Americans - unlike Toronto which was sacked and burned, like the White House, HA! -
I like America just the way it is. Besides, Canada is a bit too cold for my taste. Plus, who knows what horrors Canada holds? Good beer, gratuitously violent hockey, and Polar Bears - a deathtrap for Americans!

Don’t forget higher taxes, sociallized healthcare, stronger unions, sociallist governments.
It was once said “Canada could have British government, French culture, and American efficiency. Sadly it has a French government, American culture and British efficiency” -

Actually, the Americans captured Fort York and burned the parliament there. York is now known as Toronto. So the Canadians burneddown the American parliament as revenge which was then called the white house.
The General you are thinking of is General Brock who was killed in the Battle of Queenston Heights which was probably the most important battle in 1812. The Canadians and Natives were outnumbered 4 to 1 and still defeated the Americans.
And don’t forget that Canada got Michigan state in the battle of Detroit.
-
Yeah I forgot to mention your higher taxes on just oh. about everything
As for most important battles, I always thought it was the Battle Of Lake Champlain - yet another milestone in our superb Navy.

I se from history that we were not meant to be hockey players.

“The most important thing learned from the Persian Gulf War of 1991 is this: if you are ever to go to war against the United States of America, be sure to bring a nuclear weapon.” - Republic of India’s Military Chief of Staff -
if higher taxes means that if i broke my arm or cut hand and needed stiches or got sick and needed anti biotics I would not have to pay a cent, i’m for it. i do think taxes are a little too high up here, but canadians are too apathetic to do anything about it.
also it was not called the white house before, it was actully called the presidentel palace, the renamed it after the painted it white to hide all the scorch marks.
