My group and I have been playing 6 player Global games for years now, and we used to rotate every nation among us until we came full circle, however, over the past year we have been using a better system we call “Roll Call”.

Using the old way we would all know what nation we were playing and who our teamates were a whole month before each game, and there are some advantages to that. However, Roll Call allows most players a chance to play the nation they want… during most games.

    Here’s how it works…

Wait for all players to show up on time, then announce “Roll Call” (also good for emailing players and instead of saying when the game begins, you can say what time Roll Call is).

Everyone takes a pile of roundels (one for each nation), and secretly places in their hand which nation they wish to play. On the count of 3 each player reveals the roundel of their choice. If no one else has choosen the nation you did, then you automatically play that nation. If multiple players choose the same nation, they must roll a dice to determine who will play it (highest roll wins). Once the first round of “Roll Call” is finished, those without a nation will enter a second round with the nations that are still available, and repeat until everyone has a nation. One rule we have is that players may not play the nation they played the last game.

  • Sounds cool Grasshopper.  We have been thinking of doing a random selection here lately.  On the flip side, we really enjoy the long strategy email and phone sessions when we know our teams in advance (but then promptly ignore all agreed upon moves and do something crazy  :-o ).

We might try the roll call out with our next game.

I understand what you mean about plans going out the window, one issue with Roll Call is that we have a player who bounces back and forth from Germany to Japan and back to Germany. But if no one is challanging his choice or he gets the dice roll he needs… than so be it.

Not bad.  We usually roll for it and if we have 6 we have someone take India, China and Anzac
