The American Front: An Alternate History Map For A&A 1914

  • Customizer

    Hello All,

In addition to the modified Europe map project I’ve announced here: http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=30389.0 , I’m announcing a project I’m starting in parallel: to design a map based on author Harry Turtledove’s excellent alternate history Southern Victory series (http://turtledove.wikia.com/wiki/Southern_Victoryhttp://turtledove.wikia.com/wiki/Southern_Victory). When finished, this map will butt up against the Europe map to create a full world map of the conflict, as well as be able to be used by itself for those who only want to look at the American Front.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the book series is based on the stipulation that the Confederate States of America were able to achieve victory in the American Civil War, as well as in the Second Mexican War some years later, with intervention from their allies, Britain and France. It follows then that by 1914, the CSA is part of the Entente and the United States have allied themselves with Germany and the Central Powers. When the war breaks out, fighting rages along the North/South border, as well as between the U.S. and Canada.

My goal here is to create a custom map that will mimic the look and feel of the A&A 1914 map, as well as to write some basic rules and scenarios unique to the timeline (for those who have read the books, I do intend to have Deseret and Congaree Socialist uprising rules ).

  • Will the expansion/alternate history map also include the Pacific, or at least part of the Pacific to allow Japan to take all of Germany’s Pacific colonies?

  • Customizer

I hadn’t really planned on it, the idea being that my new Europe map will be 36"x36" and this one will be as well, with North America dominating most of it.

  • Won’t that throw the scale off when the two are combined, with the US being the same size as half of the world?

  • Customizer

Well, in my map Europe will dominate the center of the the Europe map, most likely most of Africa will be cut off. Since Europe and North America are roughly similar in size, this will make the scale pretty realistic. It’s definitely not going to be measurably perfect, but it won’t be ridiculous.

  • You may need rules for backup capitals because Washington and Richmond are so close.

I never actually read of the books so I may be wrong about what cities.ate.the capitals in this timeline

Yeah, in the case of the U.S., Washington D.C. was the capital in name only; Philadelphia was the de facto capital. But I might have to make like 1 or 2 backup capitals per nation, and you have to take all of them to win.

Cutting off the rail line that ran through Chihuahua and Sonora was also critical in the books, which encouraged fighting in the west. Might have to add some sort of National Objectives or something to that effect.

  • One I am a DIE HARD fan of the series so Bravo!!

Two… definitely have the Dessert and Congareee Uprisings in there.  For National Objectives, might I recommend having a coastal Blockade be one for the USA- During the Great War story cutting off aid from Britain was essential to the US strategy.  Multiple victory cities would be the way to go- something like this-
    (you need 6 of the 8 )

    USA                                                        CSA

    1. D.C.                                                    1) Richmond
    2. Philly                                                    2) Louisville
    3. Manhattan                                            3) New Orleans
    4. Chicago                                                4) Birmingham or St. Matthews
    5. San Fran                                              5) Lubbock
    6. Seattle                                                6) Capital of Sonora or Chihuahua
    7. Somewhere in Kansas                              7) San Antonio or Houston
      8 ) Boston                                                8 ) Habana

Lubbock a victory city?  Have you ever been there?  I’d rather use Austin.

  • The only reason being a good portion of the story takes place in Lubbock… it’s where the USA first started training and building barrels and figure out how to use them.

Fair enough, I haven’t read the books.

  • The other reason is in the books after WW1 The USA carved off the NW tip of Texas and created it’s own Rump State of Houston… and that did NOT end well…

  • Customizer

Yeah, I’m also still debating how I’m going to divide up territories…Should I do strictly states, or sub-regions (N. Texas, Northern VA, etc.)?

  • probably should be in the variant section of the forums…

  • Since WWI is its own thing perhaps we should keep it all condensed here.

We don’t need WWI cross contamination in the WWII sections.

  • Great! If you need assistance hit me up lol. I was going to do one of these, only make it a tad bit smaller. more of a sub map to the original board.

If people want to play a world wide alternate scenario of this I would reccomend using Italy piecs to represent the CSA, as in this alternate timeline Italy stayed out of the war for either side.

Also, are ya going to represent the Great Lakes at all? It was an important area in the book but one that could be taken out for the sake of gameplay.

  • Customizer

Hmmm…Hadn’t really thought about it. I suppose I could stick a cruiser or two up there…

Thanks for reminding me about the Italy thing, although for some reason using orange units to represent butternut leaves a bad taste in my mouth… but seeing as how Mr. Jensen implied there were barely enough units for OOB setup as it is, it might be the only option (besides purchasing another copy).

Could also use 1940 Brit units as well.

  • Yeah I figured using the Italians was the more practical option, but using other british (more tan ones) pieces would work to. As said, I think the greatlakes can easily be looked over, might be to much work for little value.

  • I like the ideaa (Read all 11 books ;))

I think the VCS for CSA should be

    Guyamas (on the pacific coast)
    Houston
    New Orleans
    Birmingham
    Atlanta
    Louisville
    Charleston and Richmond

    USA
    Washington
    Philadelphia
    St Louis
    San Francisco
    Boston
    Chicago
    Salt lake City
    Pittsburgh

Good suggestions. Does anyone know the font that the more recent (G40 and 1914) OOB maps use?
