Are AAP40 & AAE40 No longer in print?

  • i used to have the original AA when i was small and i would like to start playing again. Ive been reading that AA50 is super good but that’s out of print and is now 1000$ new.

AA40 Global, if I’m not mistaken, is pretty much exactly like AA50 but bigger. Please correct me if im wrong i would like to know the differences

the thing is I cannot find them ANYWHERE. AA42 looks horrible compared to global so im pretty sure i want to get global but i cant find em. Anyone know if they are still made?

I’d be surprised if they’re impossible to find.  Smaller brick and mortar stores may not be able to order them, but online such as Amazon et al still have stock.  AA1940 may be out of print but not permanently, as it appears to be in between editions, I believe.  You can expect to see them released again with updated rules; at least that has been the indication from Larry Harris (creator of A&A).

That said, it is NOT simply an enlarged version of AA50.  There are enough new units and rules that it plays quite a bit different.  It’s still A&A of course, the same basic tenents apply, but it’s still quite a bit different with diplomatic rules that are very unique only to the 1940 games.  It’s a great deal more complicated and due to the new rules, players unfamiliar with the additions will find themselves at a far greater disadvantage than previous games (including AA50, with its comparitively modest rule and piece additions).

And though it’s argued that AA50 is modestly imbalanced and requires an allied bid at the higher levels of play, AA1940 has suffered from severe imbalances that are still being ironed out, in part due to the diplomatic rules that affect the economies and can cause some rapid and extreme shifts in power.  These are still being adjusted over a series of endorsed rule revisions that may eventually culminate in a 2nd edition printing with the possible corrections.

Like kcdzim said, they are between editions I think.

Seems a little silly to do so this close to christmas, but if you want to wait for the “improved” second edition, it could be a few months.

Actually the better comparison is that AA50 is exactly like AA42, only bigger. The gameplay mechanics and units are exactly the same, but the map is much nicer on AA50.
Also, AA42 isn’t so bad, especially if you can get a bigger map. If you haven’t played for a while I would suggest it anyway. It’s cheap, simpler and when you step up to global you’ll be able to use the extra pieces as well.

Also, what some people have done on here is to buy a copy (or two) of AA42, then print out one of the available maps from AA50 and have it made for around $100. They also have the rules and setup stuff available, so you can play AA50 at a fraction of the price. All you would need is maybe a few older sets of troops to represent China and Italy, but China can be filled by US troops if need be, so all you really need is some brown units for the Italians. They can be found fairly cheap on ebay or historicalboardgaming.com.

  • Im going to buy global very soon unless the changes from the editions are going to be very drastic and physical ( such as changes in the board ) i can deal with rule changes.

    3 questions about the editions:

    • is there is actual paper money like original AA in Global and AA50 or if you have to keep track of it on paper like in AA42.

    • Production facilities now take damage in the new rules but from what info i found on the web, apparently only AA50 has damage counters. hoe do u guys keep track of damage on the facilities? is there a piece you use from other games?

    • Why in the world did they take out research in AA42?!?! trying to dumb it down?

Thanks for all the help on clearing out the differences on all these editions. i think there should be a faint FAQ or something that has all the changes from edition to edition.

There are unlikely to be any actual board changes.  perhaps cleaning up some intersections so people don’t get as confused about certain territory adjacencies, and maybe removing the very unnecessary wartime income tag on west USA or darkening the convoy markers.  Things like that.  Territory adjacencies as established are unlikely to go away and convoy zones will probably remain exactly the same.

AA50 has paper money.  AA 1940 has no paper money - grab a pencil and paper.

while AA50 had markers, in AA1940 damage is usually counted by using poker chips.

As for 1942 and research, I believe it was mainly to simplify and because tech is incredibly random and can be grossly imbalanced simply due to luck (heavy bombers plus long range aircraft can end a game).  Also, due to the small map size and decreased income of 1942, tech has an increased impact on the game.  Tech that affects movement is exagerated on a smaller map.  Tech that affects income is exagerated because compared to AA50 and AA1940, 1942 income is dollar per dollar more precious.  And since the price of tech didn’t change per edition, and the type of tech didn’t change, tech in 1942 is more imbalanced than in 1940 (though some maybe not by much).

  • Ok cool if the board us not going to change then I’m going to buy AA1940. So they’re probably just going to change initial deployment and rules. I thought there were a bunch of people complaining about certain territories and/or income on some territories.

I originally thought you meant actual poker chips until I realized u were talking about the small ones you you put under the units to represent how many there are. LOL I was thinking you meant like casino size poker chips lmao.

Ok so ill just print out all the rules when they come out then.
Thanks guys you have been really useful. Have fun playing AA!

  • he means the little chips that come with the game.  Poker chips in miniature.

I also would vote for Spring42.  Its a good game, Global just expands it to many more spaces.

If you are looking to check out Anniversary and see if it is a good game, TripleA will let you download a version of the game to play online  vs real people.  It’s not quite the same but decent enough if you want to check out the rules and see how the game plays….its also much cheaper.:)

  • By the time I edited my last postyou already posted bout the chips lol.
    Ill check out AA50 online.

To me Global seems like the face of AA, the most ultimate and the full version of the game. I don’t know if you guys would agree due to Imbalances but thosebare being solved. So I don’t really know what all the fuss about AA50 is besides being limited edition and being composed of higher quality parts. But you get less game…

Unfortunately, AA50 has lower quality pieces than AA42, but it came out before AA42.

I slightly prefer AA50 to AA40 due to the fact that you can plausibly finish in a day.  And it had two setups with options for national objectives, so technically, 4 different options for setup and play.

  • I dint know AA42 had higher quality pieces. That’s interesting.

AA50 is faster than AA Global but I don’t mind global being longer.

  • Customizer

The way I understood it, Europe 40 and Pacific 40 were temporarily out of print while Larry ironed out the rules through ALpha, Alpha+1, Alpha+2 and ALpha+3.  The final version was supposedly finished Nov 2.  Now I think they are going to put out new games with the new setups and rules included.
I have heard different rumors:  one said the new versions would be out around the first of the year.  Another said they may be ready for “Black Friday” so people can get them for Christmas gifts.  I haven’t heard any official confirmation of either.

  • well i just got the older Pacific and Europe yesterday. i guess ill just print off the new rules when they come out ( tomorrow supposedly )
