Exactly! That’s why I always wait for a declaration of war. Attacking first caused Japan to lose in real life.
Any experiences with a global J3 attack?
-
I’ll the japanese for the next global game.
To protect Germany from an early US-assault, I plan a J3 attack.
Any experiences with this strategy?
Think a J1 2 transports - 2 subs will be fine
J2 minor complex in French Indo China, 1 transport, 1 dd, 1 tank (something like that)
J3?

i did the j4 global attack last game. on round 1 i bought 2 minor ic’s for manchuria and the territory with shanghai in it (whatever that one is lol). i attacked china every where i could and took out 14 of the eastern russian infantry.
on round 2 i bought units for the ic’s and 2 transports for japan and destroyed more chinese, including the flying tigers, and more russian territories.
round 3, upgraded the shanghai ic to major, brought fleet to sz 36 and units from japan to kwangsi, china down to 2 territories
round 4, attacked phillipines (including the stuff US brought there from hawaii), borneo, kwangtung and finished off china
we called it a night after round 4 but i feel that i’m set up to take india in 2 rounds and with the major ic in shanghai and minor in manchuria, japan shouldn’t have any problems on the mainland.

I like to go a little earlier, turn two if possible. You deny India and Australia a large percentage of their income by taking the DEI sooner. Toss out a couple transports 1st turn. Round 2 I’m looking to get a major complex to directly compete with India and fast. Might have to wait till Round 3 to build it in Kwangtung or Malaya.
Let the US get the 30 bucks. Either way they’re building 50 points of something planning to use it in Gibralter. Wait too long and they build peaceably. Catch them soon and maybe you can pounce on some of that stuff from the Philippians.

I almost always do a J3 attack. Allows Europe some breathing room but does not allow the ANZAC or Indian forces to get too powerful. On turn one I buy two transports and a Manchurian minor factory. I push into china on all fronts, moving the bulk of forces south while attacking china. I push 2 or 3 infantry into Yunnan to attack the Burma road with all available fighters. I move the two Siamese infantry into French Indo China. I move the mechanized infantry as far south as I can. I keep the transports in the sea of Japan and land the tank, two infantry and an artillery into Korea. I use the transport in the Caroline Islands to grab the infantry off of Palau. I also move an extra carrier down to the Caroline’s.
J2:
Buy: a minor factory for French Indo China, two infantry and an artillery for Manchuria and two more infantry and another artillery for JapanOn turn two I move into Yunnan (assuming China counter attacked) with 5 or 6 infantry, a mechanized infantry and two artillery. I again surge into China across the line. I poise the majority of the fleet down in the Caroline Islands and move a small force off of Johnston Island complete with transport with two infantry. I keep two transports in the Sea of Japan and offload four men into Korea, (grab the two off of Okinawa and Iwo Jima to make sure you have enough men for transports next turn) I usually push into Russia on this turn but it depends on how things look but usually you have more than enough infantry to stand off with them.
J3:
Buy; (If I still hold Yunnan) I buy a couple mechanized infantry and infantry or one infantry and a couple mechanized depending on what is in Yunnan. I buy three Infantry in (or artillery if I can afford it) in Manchuria. Remaining funds go into subs for Japan. Here is where attacks vary depending on allied movements but typically for my opponents Hawaii has been fortified so the force off the Johnstons moves to take New Britain and stop both ANZAC bonuses with one attack. I move a sub or two off the coast of Queensland with available air-force off carriers and take out the at least destroyer that is blocking Sydney. I move a transport to Borneo with an infantry and AA or two infantry off of the Caroline’s. I move another transport out of the caroline’s with two men onto Celebes with a carrier if need be to attack the forces if any on the island. I also bring enough to ensure that one or both of those transports lives (often a small fleet to defend the Indian navy with Borneo landing and a destroyer off the coast of Java (whatever the long sea zone island is) to defend transport off Celebes and block on convoys. One transport from SZ6 moves to take the Philippine’s with bombers from french indo. The other transport in SZ6 takes Kwangtung with sufficient air force which was also staged in French Indo. I now use the forces in Yunnan to make sure that both Burma and Shan state fall allowing me to take Malaya on J4 with Shan state and Mech built in French Indo on J3.
J4 Things are varying far to much to do a full report but always put 3 units in both minor factories and take the remainder of the DEI. Main fleet and fighter force tends to move back to caroline’s to stand off with US forces which are probably becoming a little bold.
J5 depending on pressure put a minor or major in Malaya to outproduce or at least stall India while you move some of those men into China to push them back and surround them.
*Subs are always being produced to block convoys and take out Indian fleet with Strat bombers and to crush Australia into making 3-4 a turn.
Obviously depending on Allied strats things need tobe tweaked but the general idea is you make a ton of money by the end of J4 and can now compete with everyone at the same time unless of course the US is pushing the majority against you in which case you have successfully bought your European allies some room to pressure Britain, Russia and Africa.
Does that help a bit?

Thanks for the reports! :-D
I have to think on it and comparing it with my ideas.

In J4 the USA has declared war in the previous turn. Is it futile to wait until J4?

not really, but if you attack during j3 then the US can counter US3 and attack the other axis players. Germany had a fleet in sz 87 that i didn’t want to be attacked.

Yes… nice point… :-)

I have been attacking J3 unless the US is postured to attack somewhere vital…if that is the case I go on J4…
Pretty tough to get going fast enough waiting until J4 though…

I always attack on J3. If you have let the US posture for major attack on US3 then I feel I have failed as Japan or the US is inexperienced and doesn’t realize what he is about to lose…

One of the things I’ve tried with a J3 attack is a minor IC in FIC (thats french indo-china if anyone was wondering :-)) I also break off a chunk of the fleet, usually 1BB 2DD 1CR 1AC with 1ftr and 1 tac and several transport and place them off the coast of FIC, then posture with the rest of the fleet in the carolines, so they can respond to any major allied build up. The real key is to make sure you have Yunnan under your control at the start of turn 3. This way your airforces can strike at India proper.
From these positions you can hit the allies in all of their IPC rich tt and damn near double Japans Economy in 1 turn. Also, with the IC in FIC, you can create a self-sustaining front, allocating resources there using IPC take from the region.

J4 lasts too long in my opinion.
Can’t wait 3 turns while my european comrades are fighting for lebensraum.
Thougt about your reports.
My first production will be:
2 subs, 2 transports
second:
2 subs, 1 artillery, 2 transports
third:
minor complex (Manchuria strategy A, FIC strategy B)
tank, artillery, 3 infantryStrategy A: Ignore the russians and hold the line in Manchuria. Get “everything” to FIC, go for Yunan in J2 and crush the chinese inf production + Flying tigers only with planes, tacs and bombers (maybe you loose 2 - 3 planes). Rush throug china and go for the russian border. Meanwhile prepare a J3 attack on UK ships, Malaysia, Kwangtung, Borno and celebs. Freeze the UK income from sumatra and java with 2 subs each. Go for a major complex in Malaysia in J4.
Strategy B: Hit the russian in J1 at Amur with all the Manchurian stuff and two loads from Japan. 10 - 11 ground units will survive. (think the russians will only pplace 1 infantry there and concentrate out of land-unit-range) The go for Moscow throug siberia. Meanwhile prepare a J3 attack on UK ships, Malaysia, Kwangtung, Borno and celebs. Freeze the UK income from sumatra and java with 2 subs each. Go for a major complex in Malaysia in J4.

Sounds like a soild plan, may the dice gods be with you! :-D
One word of caution though, dont get yourself bogged down on the Asian mainland, remember, killing off Russia is good, but its those vital Victory Cities that win you the game in the end. Keep your eye on the prize and the game is yours :-) Good Luck!

Important Point.
Prevents the UK from from a “First-strike-attack” on less or unescorted japanese transports.

My friend and I have played close to 15 games of Global since we got it. (We were able to get a copy early and both of us are super nerds that have used a lot of our free time on this game.)
At first the allies kept winning and we thought the only way to go was for to Japan to attack early to get its economy moving. Yet last game he did a J3 as the axis and defeated me. He built mostly transports and men the first couple of rounds. He then moved everything in position and attacked J3. He was able to boost Japans economy by a ton in that one turn and kept the US at 52 points the first 3 turns.
Turns out US was just not able to crack Germany by a small margin at the end of the game. It definitely helped him that US had 60 less points to spend early.
I think there are merits to keeping US out of the war as long as possible. I used to think J1 was the way to go but have since revised my thinking. Also your plan to get IC on the mainland early sounds like a good idea. Hope everything goes well.

I never attack before J3 and our group has a current 4 game winning streak with the axis.

How does the Philipines work into this? If there are planes, you are probably going to lose a lot of transports. By this stage, I would have thought Japan would be keen to spend IPCs on something hard, like mech and tanks for the mainland, replacing lost planes, or building up the navy in Japan with destroyers and the like. Will you hit Philippines J4? expect three thranports and some bombardments would usually be enough. But maybe you need a fair bit if US fortifies it.
Just curious because I have learned a lot from this thread. And will be the Axis this coming Weekend.

Also, was thinking…
If I was UK, I would seriously contemplate a UK2 dec of war against Japan. If anything can be hit to your advantage, why not. The Japs are just going to attack next go. Maybe the UK should think about reinforcing Yunnan on UK 2, if available, or taking it back.

No, Japan may not attack J3 to prevent the US from moving adjacent to Europe/Africa
-
Japan has to wait as long as possible to attack in Global. When I play Japan I always attack round 3. No reason to give USA 30 IPC until you can compete with it.
