Buying 1942
-
I use to play the original A&A must be 20 years ago. Had one or two variations of the game at the time and a better printed map also. But that was a lifetime ago.
Just recently my girl has started playing a lot of risk with me. She is getting into it a lot and thought I might introduce her to A&A for a more in depth game.
Unfortunately I had no clue what all went on with the game over the years. Man some of the versions are lots of money. i know out of print and all but still!
I see the 1942 version for cheap (enough to see if my girl will play A&A!)…… would buy 2 of them to get enough pieces but would like a better map.
I see all the downloads and one of the main guys posts here. Grabbed them all just to be sure. I have the 42 game versions on the way.Question is - what map works (which file) best with the stock rules of 1942? I want to get the file off to staples and have them print a nice bigger map. But not sure if I can use the anniversary edition map or any other with stock rules. Or stick to the 1942 corrected map?
Last question - 24x36 a good size to print to for the game board?
oh and hello all :) :-D

I just recently got '42 and have only played it once, but it is fun. The board is only slightly smaller than the revised board, but looks so much better. Plus, a few things are upgraded. The most important fix is that Eastern US does not touch Panama. This makes it actually possible for Japan to use the panama canal. Also West Canada is no longer THE territory to put your units in since it no longer touches the Alaska SZ or the WUS SZ. There are also Formosa and Iceland which are generally pointless.
Get AA42. It is a blast and a huge upgrade from classic. Unless you are getting a larger map printed, stick with the OOB one; revised board is not enough larger to be worth it.

Yeah i was gonna print one of the maps, I hate playing on squeezed small maps and thye general concensus was the 42’ map that comes with the game is terribly small!
But maybe you are right - let me see if my girl likes playing A&A before printing a map up.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. My favorite AA game is 1942. I have AAP40 but no room or time to play it. AA42 map is only small in a couple of the European territories during the first couple of turns. If you have access to Revised you can use the marshal cards and tokens for the small spaces and the board is just fine that way. I had thought about printing out a bigger map that IL has made but no room for it. If you find that you want to add research and development or national advantages the forum for House Rules has some in there that you can look at. Enjoy AA42 and happy gaming.

Yea, I finally get to use those marshaling cards I got in revised. If you want more flavor, try playing AARe. You can play it with AA42 board and pieces. map is close enough to revised that it should be about the same game play.
AARe is stickied in the house rule section and is IMO the best revised alternate rule set. It has nicely balanced tech and NAs as well as changed rules for subs that make them interesting and useful. The last and only AA42 game I played, I ran out of ICs. The allies ended up building ICs in South Africa, India, Australia, and East Indies. It became an economic struggle for who would have higher production for longer as Russia fell early and the allies held africa and took most of Japan’s money early. It was a fun but very long game.

the changes between the revised board and the 1942 board are pretty major when considering unit movement.
I consider the 1942 game the best version over all (I haven’t played the latest europe or pacific game) but the board is too small. If you use the revised board with the 1942 rules, make sure you draw in the changes that are on the 1942 board… they make a difference -

There are some nice marshal cards and tokens on the AAP40 forum in a sticky. http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=17094.0 Bob calls them Task Force Markers. Since they were created for AAP40 only Japan, United States and United Kingdom can be used for AA42 but I think that he will be working on Russia and Germany cards and tokens after AAE40 comes out later this month. It will be nice to have nation specific cards to use with AA42. I have the files for Japan, United States and United Kingdom marshal cards ready to print and mount but waiting for the other 2 nations to be completed before I print and mount them on card stock. Also, I made a copy of the victory city board from Revised to use with AA42 since the victory cities are the same in Revised and 1942.

Curious. I don’t dispute differences in the maps. But, how are they major? And, how do they make a difference with experienced players?
1st… In revised… if you had a bomber on britain… you could attack boats in SZ 63 now you can’t because Alaska is extended to the top of the map and Western canada does not touch that SZ. this could also affect moving planes to Russia through the north.
2nd… In revised SZ 55 also touched western Canada, fighters there could attack the waters of pearl harbor and land back in W. Canada.
3rd… In Revised Central America was drawn next to Cali and was not adjacent to the gulf of Mexico. those men there had to move to be loaded on a transport. In 1942, its adjacent and now you can immediately bring those 2 men with you on turn 1.
These are major when considering USA Strategies for attack and defense. In revised I used to park some bombers and planes in Western Canada… from there the bombers could reach SZ 13 or SZ 60 and threaten the Japanese coast and the entrance to the Mediterranean… also landed Fighters on eastern canada, from there they could attack SZ 63 and the SZ’s on the western coast or could fly to Britain if needed fast.
Personally i prefer 1942 Map… if only it was bigger and clearer boarders
