I had to laugh and take this picture.

Excellent job! Love the planes.

I’d skip painting seldom used units (Russian naval vessels and Italian bmb come to mind.

I thought about that, but im not really painting the game for play reasons, more of a painting exercise.
I really like painting and just wanted to do a project, for the sake of doing a project almost.
I could play AA with old bits of cardboard, this is just for fun

I need to do a picture of the underside of the planes as I painted them a very light blue and the contrast between top and bottom is quite nice.

Just out of intrest, did you consider dry brushing?.
Also Flames of war models paint up and fit very nicley on the discs, ive tried the dry brush over basic national coulours and a more detailed approach and don’t know which way to go as i kinda like both!!.
I normally do a bit of drybrushing on models, but i fnd the AA50 models too small to really utilize that technique. I did drybrush the metal parts on the German artillery (88flak) however. I tend only to drybrush metal.
What I do instead is a lot of inking. Taking black (or a darker shade of the original colour if black is overkill) and the original shade, mixing them and then applying a lot of water. You then coat the model in the watered blackish mess over the original paint. It falls into all the cracks and once dried, you paint the higher areas of the model again and is creates a nice layered effect. When I post pictures of the fleet you should see that a bit better.
The key to painting, i think at least is practice. Start simple and build up. Be prepared to paint lots of crappy models, you should see my original blood bowl team from when I was 13!
I learned a lot from various friends who paint in a whole league above me (One friend even has a couple of games workshop golden demon placings) . I sat with them and painted horribly for years and they gave me advice and guidance. Slowly, and surely I got better. I’m not a fantastic painter, but i’m not horrible either.

wow very nice. makes me want to paint mine. sure would make it easier to distinguish between russian and italian forces. the friend i play with is color blind and sometimes he has a hard time seeing the difference. nice work.

I think you now inspired me to paint up my Axis and Allies miniatures! Yours look great, can not wait to see the rest!

Germans are finished! 8-)
Well, almost. I am planning on getting some flock to do the bases for the German infantry, but that will be way later
Updated pictures include the entire fleet painted and some quick snaps of the Germans in their 1941 start up positions with all units on the board.

Wow, my compliments on another solid paint job that makes me envious!
BTW what did you use for the stars on the ships? Looks like a decal of some sort.

My local model store has loads of stuff for flames of war, so i grabbed a transfer set. You can also see some of the cyrillic script on the russian tanks as well.
Annoyingly, flames of war doesnt do Japanese models so ill be winging the paint scheme a bit.

I’m very impressed, well done! Are you planning to paint the IC & AA units as well?
-
I’ll second what everyone else has said as well…very impressive indeed!
I have a question as well…is this sort of work something that is available for purchase? What I mean is does anyone sell fully painted and historically accurate sets?
-
I want someone to paint my units!!
I think I will go to a local shop where they hold Miniatures game. Maybe someone will paint them for me :)

WOW :-o That is some really impressive stuff! Well done. I’m soooooo jealous.

Whilst on the topic of painting, i play Warhammer Fantasy and love to play but hate the painting so paid an overseas company to paint my stuff. They did a good job and were priced well. Maybe i should get them to paint my AA minatures too. If your wondering who they are you can find them at www.paintedfigs.com

Yep gonna do the AA guns in a generic grey and most of the IC’s in a redbrick look. However, I plan to paint all the nations starting IC’s thematically and leave them in the individual nation bits boxes.
That overseas company looks ok, and are reasonably priced. My 40k models are of that standard or higher already so I doubt I woudl use them.
Omega
Give it a go, just be prepared to pay a bit. After all, even painting 670 models to a lowish standard takes a long long time.
Pan
Don’t know of anyone who sells painted AA models. I know if I was to do another set i would charge a fortune as its very time consuming.
Thanks all for the comments and compliments. Japan will hopefully be done in the next 2-3 weeks and I will post them up once i’ve finished.

Phase Three is complete, and not a moment to soon! Too many damned ships!
Moving on the the UK next, planning on doing the armour and artillery in 8th armour colours. And I need to figure out how to do little union jacks. PS. I will be redoing some of the german and Russian ships with flags as well.
