    • RE: Global 1942 Scenario by Larry Harris

This could be the worst setup of all time from a historical perspective.  At least since the MB 1985 where Japan was setup to attack Hawaii in 1942 somehow.

When is it supposed to be?  Japan took Burma in January 1942.  If it is supposed to be January, then they should have yet to invade Java and take Malaya.  Worst of all, the US Marines didn’t invade the Solomon Islands until AUGUST.  If it’s supposed to be August, Japan should have the Aleutians.  The Solomons should have an airbase.

On the other side of the board, the US is setup to do Torch, which happened in November.  US forces should be in England, let alone Australia. The USSR is setup to attach Karkov, which happened in May.  El Alamein is about to happen, so it appears to be July.

I’m willing to come whenever.  Just let us know.

In the meantime there’s always Strategicon three times a year, Gencon every year, and Tacoma Axis & Allies Meetup Group events to do!

    • RE: Soviet fleet in black sea

I think it’s a great idea.  Also a Soviet sub or two in the Pacific off Amur might help dissuade a Japanese invasion.

They should look into this during the next Alpha revision.

    • RE: New Strategy for Allied Win

I’m so glad you found A&A.org, so I don’t have to shoot down your insane strategies in person!  Now you can bounce ideas off everyone else.

I’d like to see the Allies go all out on a KJF, but again it all depends on what the Axis does.

    • Late Game ideas

So I’ve been in this position twice now.  After all the strategizing and playing 9+ turns, the Allies stop the Axis from winning outright, but Moscow falls and then what happens?

I’ve been here once as the good guys (a contested draw) and once as the bad guys (allies win).

Noone ever seems to talk about what happens next.  You’ld think typical Allies strategy is to go all in against one Axis power while blocking the other from winning.  In other words, take down Japan and then swing around to take out Germany after 16+ turns.  Typical Axis strategy all depends on what the Allies do.

In the early game it’s really the Axis that dictate the game.  I think it’s interesting that in the late game it’s the other way around.  Am I wrong?  If the target is Japan, then Germany builds a bunch of complexes either in the Middle East to take Egypt or a big navy to invade England while the Allies focus in the Pacific.  If the target is Germany, does Japan try to finish off India or Australia?  I’ve never seen Germany be the target first.  Anyone else usually play the game out or is it always a concession?  Seems pretty balanced once it gets to the later turns.

    • RE: OOB rule on Russia entering China

Either UK or USSR can declare war on Japan at any time.  Such an action requires no pieces to actually move.

USSR can enter China with a simple declaration before the Combat Move phase.  However, they cannot ATTACK a Japanese-held territory adjacent to Manchuria without consequences.  If they do, they will never receive the Manchurian troops if attacked.

UK can enter China after a declaration, however this will not bring the US into war with Japan until Turn 3 or a Japanese declaration against US, whichever comes first.

      I know it’s confusing.

    • RE: Ramdas Vaidyanathan has a new move called "Ram's Mahatma Gambit" -

The basic idea I guess is to force Japan to declare war earlier so that the USA can get into Europe a turn faster.

It’s a brilliant tactic for someone who doesn’t expect it, but I’ve seen it three times now in various forms.  Only really usable against n00bs or people who just aren’t any good at Japan    coughs

You can’t name a maneuver after yourself, man.  Someone has to call it that first.  Sorry to burst your bubble.  Maybe we’ll call it the Mathew Perry move or Arrival of the Black Ships or something.

The now-defunct Bielefeldt Maneuver was given the name, it didn’t come with one ready-made.

My favorite battle?  Gallipoli, baby!  Loved the movie.

There’s a new series on TV called WWI: The First Modern War.  Check it out.

    • RE: What is your most favourite AA Game ?

For me it all depends on how many players we have.  I voted A&A Europe '99 for if we have 3or 4 players.  It always has been the gold standard in my opinion.
If we have 5 or more, without a doubt it’s Global '40.2
2 players would be the miniatures games, any version.

    • RE: The most important battle of World War II?

It’s definitely either Midway or Stalingrad.  I think it’s dismissive of the sacrifices that British, Russian, and American soldiers made to simply assume that the US could win the whole war by itself with it’s industrial might alone.

No other battles decisively turned the tide of the war.  Before the Allied victories at Midway, Stalingrad, and El Alamein in 1942 it really did look like the Axis were going to win.

Personally, I’d have to say it’s Midway.  If the US and not the Japanese carriers had been destroyed, if Midway had been occupied and another attack on Hawaii organized from there…

I think World War II would have gone very different.

    • The most important battle of World War II?

Note that I did not include the Doolittle Raid or dropping the Atomic Bomb on Japan.  Obviously the use of atomic weapons changed the course of human history, but the war was pretty much over at that point and the Axis situation was hopeless.

I’m asking for what you consider the single most important battle of the war.  The battle that altered history for good or ill.

      Thanks.

    • RE: Cheesy allied move

      @theROCmonster:

The problem you aren’t seeing is that Japan can easily put 2 subs off borneo, a fleet off of Malaya, and a fleet off of East Indies so that UK will get convoyed for most of her money. Japan still would be able to get Kwangtung, and set up for a take of all 4 Islands and Malaya turn 3. A good Japan player should have one transport in sea zone 20 that could take Borneo or Malaya on turn 2 anyways.

You’re forgetting that UK is not at war with Japan on it’s turn.  Japan won’t get any convoy disruptions, but neither do the UK get any NO money.  ANZAC will, though.  Unless you’re talking about the next turn, when Japan should be declaring war regardless.

We had this happen to us once in a game.  We were more than happy to leave the US alone and crush the British.  It delays the takeover of the DEI for a turn, but it’s worth not having to deal with the US until at least Turn 4.

The problem for the allies is not how to harass Japan, but how to hold the victory cities long enough to take Germany down.  Not sure this is very effective to that end.  Pain in the behind does not equal victory.
