    • RE: IL, Champaign: Axis and Allies Miniature and Revised Gamers Wanted

      Holy crap…

I lived in Champaign for 3 years in college and could almost never find anyone to play with.  Gaming at The Dragon’s Table on Saturday nights was the closest I came, outside of my roommate George.

Anyways, I live in Minnesota now but I might be moving back at the end of the summer.

BTW, play 1942 or PAC40 too.

So I’ve stepped away from the game for about 2 1/2 years now and I just found someone to play War At Sea with the other day.

I think before I get back into it (because it is expensive) I’d like to see if we can get people together to play it, or at least if anyone could point me in the direction of the local War At Sea group.

If anyone lives in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, stop by Fantasy Flight Games Event Center on Tuesdays… that’s where I’ve met the only other two people who play this game. (in person I mean, obviously if you’re on this site you play)

In fact, if anyone knows anyplace in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Illinois with serious War At Sea gamers, let me know!

    • RE: How many boxes?

WOW, this thread really did get alot of replies.

Anyways, I think that they should make 4 full size boxes for US, UK, USSR, and Germany, and 2 half-size boxes for Italy and France.  Half-size lengthwise, not long-ways.  Know what I mean?

The current box size is 3.5"x11.6"x1.4".  France and Italy should be 3.5"x5.8"x1.4" so they can fit together in the box.

While they’re at it they should throw in a box for chips, dice, and base counters too.
      That’s probably wishful thinking, though.

    • How many boxes?

So I would assume that the Europe 1940 box is going to be the exact same size as the Pacific 1940 one, right?  The PAC40 box fits 5 of the unit boxes (with the starting setups on them) perfectly.  Can I assume then that Europe 1940 is going to have 5 also?  That would be a neat trick since there are going to be 6 playable countries in the game.
So I’d guess that Germany, Russia, England, and America are going to get their very own boxes, so how are they going to put the Italian and French troops in there?

Has anyone else though about this?  Are the unit boxes just going to be smaller then?  Is one country’s setup card going to list two countries?

So I’ve noticed the inherent lack of anti-aircraft guns on this thread.
      Behold!

Even China and ANZAC have one

      Sorry about the image quality.
This is just an idea.  I borrowed the “roundels on the bottom” idea from your infantry allwork.  I don’t like to use the counters unless I have to, this just seems better.
Here’s hoping the images show up ok. ACK! THEY DON’T!

This is what I’ve come up with so far.  I’m trying to find a way to print them on a 3"x5" card so I can tape them to the reference sheets.

Hay, has anyone thought to make cards for Guadalcanal like they have for almost every other A&A variant on this site?
I’m just saying, it’d be nice to have a reference for things like what “Superior Fighters” and “Ranged Fire” do.

If I have to make them I will, but they won’t be very good quality probably.  More to come I guess.

    • RE: New Player to the Game!

I agree with the others, welcome.

the main thing to remember (about all A&A games) is never to leave your units anywhere they can get killed.  Since you can’t land air forces on areas that you just took, make sure to only attack with the minimum land forces required to take the territory.  This goes both ways too, if you see a big pile of your opponents pieces in range of an attack don’t ignore that possibility.
You say the Burma road was protected but if you hit it with only a few guys and ALL the planes you can muster it goes away very quickly.
Also, don’t keep any forces behind when you attack, move everything that you have to the front, you can always build units to protect yourself if it goes bad.
Another tip is that because all combat happens at one time, a single destroyer or cruiser placed next to an enemy fleet can block the entire force from attacking your precious islands.  For example, a US player worried about Hawaii will throw a destroyer in between Japan and Hawaii, because the japanese fleet will have to kill the destroyer before it can move all the way there.  He could attack just with planes but planes don’t get you control over territories, only land units ferried by transports would.  He could also move there on non-combat, but then the US would have an attack on him with everything they’ve got.

    • RE: Accurate Miniature Equivalents for Custom Painting your 1940 E&P

BTW, on your initial list of accurate miniatures, the Japanese carriers should be “Shokaku” class, not “Shinano”.  The Shinano was only one ship and got sank a week after it was finished.  The Shokaku class served in almost every major Pacific battle until the Philippines campaign.

    • P-40 Flying Tigers

Alrighty, so I can forgive the fact that they didn’t include any Navy Hellcats with this game, because you can just pull the ones out of Guadalcanal or whatever to make up for that… but is there any reason at all why they couldn’t have a Chinese P-40 fighter mold?
Can anyone think of anything I could paint that looks like a P-40?  From any A&A set?  Something under about $10?
-I’ve seen allwork’s set and he uses a Spitfire (not a big fan)
-I really don’t wanna use a Navy Hellcat or P-38 on principle
-A&A Minis has a P-40 but it’d be more than twice as big as any other fighter on the board
-Theres a 1/144 model die-cast P-40 out there but it costs up to $50 if you can find it

      Please help!

    • RE: Marines

Indeed, I do miss Marines.  I’ve actually posted on this before.  Throwing 3 inf and 3 art in Queensland in a game of PAC40 just isn’t near as powerful as 3 marines and 3 artillery would be.  I also miss how China was designed in the old game.  There Chinese territory was (mostly) worthless so it’s not near the same incentive for Japan to take it.  In PAC40 China is worth 12 bucks! (vs. 2 in the old game)

    • RE: Accurate Miniature Equivalents for Custom Painting your 1940 E&P

Any new ideas on pricing yet?  In other words, how much for a full global (usable in every A&A game yet released) super-deluxe set like the one shown here?  $1000 or so?

I’d just like to know my options.  I prolly couldn’t afford one so I’d have to do it myself and I’d like to know how much money I’d be saving, lol.

BTW, the US carriers look superb.

    • Strategic Bomb Germany or Italy?

What do you guys think?  Having at least one UK bomber and 2 US bombers in Britain it’s only natural to want to bomb the heck outta the axis in Europe.  But is it more effective to concentrate on knocking down the german war machine or picking on the hapless but deadly Italians?  I always do Italy because it’s SO much harder for Italy to pay off damage than Germany, besides the fact that I like to go for Italy first when playing the Allies.  Am I wrong there?

    • RE: Mech Infantry-Halftracks

Well, to answer your question… when I play as Japan in this game I build ICs in China or Malaya in order to turn out ground units for taking India.  I would rather spend 12 bucks on 3 mech inf than 18 bucks on tanks and the rest of my money goes towards building Navy to ward off the US.  Your power lies in your airforce so what you really need (more than tanks) are just guys to lose, but plain infantry move so freaking slow.

India could use them to snag some territory that Japan might be neglecting, but I don’t really see how effective they could be for them.

For ANZAC they are a cheap alternative to tanks that can still reach every space in Australia.  Pair 3 of them up with 4 fighters and taking out a small Japanese landing force should be easy.

The only way they could be useful to the US is if the US managed to take Korea and built a Major IC there.  10 of them could be very deadly in China.

Just because they cant make full use of them doesn’t mean they get destroyed.  The other allies could use china’s sea bases to get repaired, and if japan re-took that territory it would get back everything it lost (except the ind. complexes, of course).

    • RE: Bob_A_Mickelson's Complete AAP40 Charts and Aids [1st Ed.]

Your China special rules card says that all facilities built in China and then liberated are removed.  I’m not sure that’s totally accurate.  The rules say that Industrial Complexes are removed, but is vague when it comes to Naval and Air bases & Anti-air guns.  I’d assume that because they don’t specify that these are removed, they work like any other Allied power captured them.  What do you think?

    • Japan's Advantage

I want to know if I’m alone here… but given (in my opinion) the clear Japanese bias in this game - one thing stands out to me.

If Japan takes India, New South Wales, and/or Hawaii they get a 5 IPC bonus to their income.  So why not give the allies the same thing?  What I’m saying is that those locations shouldn’t be any more strategically important for the Japanese than the Allies.  So if it were up to me I’d add a national objective for UK, ANZAC, and USA.

Do you guys think that would be too powerful?  Anyone have any other ideas about how to balance the game out?
