RE: Deciding to sell my copy spring 41
This is what I purchased Gargantua
errmm but it doesn’t have the greenish disc on the right of the box under where it says anniversary edition like the above one does, the card inserts inside the interior boxes have both 41 and 42 scenarios.
Anniversary comes with a 1941 and 1942 setup, but it doesn’t say SPRING on the box… so I’m wondering where you got that from?
Ahh okay my box lid does say SPRING 1941, THE WORLD IS AT WAR! Then it has the A&A title with anniversary edition next to the game title.
You found an Axis & Allies title in a flippin’ charity shop?! You lucky dog! :-D I remember I once found the game ‘Battle Of Britain’ in a charity shop and I was well chuffed.
Haha thanks, i’m hoping it is indeed the rare version and i’ve not confused myself, but yeah 25 pounds is what it cost me. I appreciate the help in making sure it is legit though.

RE: Deciding to sell my copy spring 41
25£ from a ageUK charity shop, I went in with my mam and noticed it on the shelf, thinking it was a ‘normal’ copy of A&A thought i’d pick it up and cannibalize it for europe use, then saw the 25£ price tag but thinking even if worth no real value the extra play pieces would enhance the game we do play as we always run out in europe and was looking for spares.
Thanks for the reply.

Deciding to sell my copy spring 41
Okay today I picked up a copy of the anniversary edition, I purchased it to use the play pieces inside for my europe game. But after looking through gameboardgeek and ebay i’ve seen that the game is worth some cash, kind of debating selling it and picking up a copy of pacific, which I still haven’t had the cash to purchase.
I’ve had a quick look through this forum to find a realistic value for the item and the closest seems to be 300$, i’d like to know if this is actually realistic though, or is it just a waste of time thinking i’d make that amount on the game.
I’ve unboxed it today and i’m not even sure it’s been used as the IPC notes are unused and none of the play pieces are broken or bent (unlike my well used europe copy) the box lid however is a little scuffed on the corners from storage I imagine.
Anybody think it’s worthwhile selling? I love playing the game but i’m not a collector and would rather get some cash and possibly pick up a few boardgames for the value.

RE: How is the balance with the new Alpha 2 changes? Please give your view.
@Cmdr:
To qualify for your rule that everyone has the same ability, if you were to use “home guard” I would recommend it as you described, but the units are a one time bonus of units defending at 1, attacking at 0, move 0, cost 0. In effect:
America invades E. Germany. E. Germany is worth 5 IPC (no idea why it’s worth less than London, whatever) so Germany would get their defenders and an immediate placement of 5 units that defend at 1, and can be taken as casualties.
On Germany’s next turn, just after France’s collect income phase, before Germany buys their units for this round, those units are removed and a marker placed on E. Germany to show that the “home guard” has been used. However, I would suggest just allowing them to be activated on each and every assault of a Victory City. (so England has to beat them, America has to beat them and ANZAC has to beat them and if that does not work, France does not beat them, then Russia would have to beat them as well. Worst case scenario.)
Our gaming group is very mixed in ability of playing this game, plus at the clubs we sometimes have folk who have never played a strat board game mixed with vets. the rule was essentially to keep it simple as possible as we do random draws on who plays what, and some of our players are very aggresive and will push for sealion no matter and if the UK player is new and learning (and out of the game on G3 is not learning anything other than to shore up in UK and pray) this was the main reason why we implemented the house rule but we decided all nations should gain it, to stop mistakes happening as well :/
However yes against a group who play regular I would take the house rules further and implement what you have added to hopefully improve the game further, as i believe the militia activation already does in our games, I will point out that since using it our games usually last 2 more turns. I look forward to the time when your worst case scenario happens though, not quite reached a point where Berlin is threatened by the Soviets, yet.

RE: How is the balance with the new Alpha 2 changes? Please give your view.
Whew just finished reading through this topic, in comment to the earlier discussion regarding the defense of UK we have a house rule in place for the invasion of any VC (not just England) the defenders gain the amount of Inf. to points of IPC generated by that location so UK is 6 so would gain a one time bonus of 6 Inf, France would gain an additional 4 Inf. for defense against the German invasion. We allow the activation once at the first moment of invasion, so obviously plans for invasion are drawn out and planned to negate this bonus, basicly a longer game, though i do like to marshall U.S troops in UK for Dday, looks all purty.
While I like the Home Guard idea we try not to have rulesets for individual nations not because I dislike the idea but because the simpler the better.

RE: The worse German defeat ever
3. With Italy, depending if your navy gets pwned or not, do your best to take Egypt and then hold onto that like it was the girl who gave you your first blowjob. Take gibraltar, place a destroyer in the seazone outside of the Med. You can slow the americans down by 3 turns in doing this.
A question on this point, surely you need to leave an Italian destroyer inside the Mediterranean seazone that buffers the med Gib and the Atlantic Ocean as all combats are similtaneous so the US fleet can’t take Gib and still move fleet into the Med, or have i got the rules wrong? if not then you would still have the chance to take Gib back and keep the US out of the Med.

RE: German Strategy: Mediterranean Offensive
Put units on the eastern front in offensive positions, that although look offensive are really Defensive.
Russia usually backs off and leaves a 1 inf buffer.
If it makes sense like it did for me, attack the buffer intelligently, but if it looks ugly, Then just DONT attack on Germany 4. You still get + 5 IPC’s for not being at war, you buy yourself an EXTRA turn against Russia, because likely since you’ve planned for a defence he can’t attack any of your territories, and if he does, you have Defenders advantagee.
No one seems to predict, that G4 moves might not encompass an attack on Russia. Depending on how Russia’s defense is aligned aswell, you can head north or south.
Coupling that option with a mediterranean strategy, is not necessarily a bad idea. The only outstanding concern is the Russia navy, but chances are it’s suicide for him to attack you too.
I concur, with intelligent placing of German units on the eastern front i see no reason why you could not put of the invasion of USSR, which would help in strengthening locations and getting Strat Bombers and other military resources into position.
While ofcourse the US/UK forces are a threat, the UK should be less so, as proposed before German subs should be hitting supply lines hard and Axis troops should be pushing through to South Africa and Troops permitting even into the Sudan and across to UK controlled India. Overall the aim is to ensure when the landings do happen the only player will only really be the US and with the troops Germany has been building for the previous 4 turns should be in a position to repel the first landings, combined with Destroyer blocks should hopefully mire US forces.
I’m aware that US IPC is still larger than (though they have to purchase fleet and air support to safely get them across the ocean) Germany however hopefully the greater cooperation between the Axis in Africa can only prove to make Italy stronger back in Europe and much more capable of adding real support for the Axis to fight against Allied assault in europe.
Though as you suggest the USSR fleet could be perhaps (most likely ) a problem, untill i actually try a game i can’t really see what numbers will be involved on both sides, though i actually wanted to get a chance to play Allies in our next game i’m itching to get another go at playing the Germans

RE: German Strategy: Mediterranean Offensive
G’s production at the end of G1 is 41-39 IPCs, plus the 17 IPCs from France and 5 for an NO, so it’s 60 IPCs and spare change. At the end of G2 the production level won’t move much, unless it attacks Greece or Russia, but it will get the 2nd NO from control of all of France/Benelux/Norway, so it will be 50 IPC and something. The US wartime production is 65 IPCs.
Okay so not as much as i thought but still a good amount, but surely with the Germans helping in the Med with troops and ships supporting the Italians in Africa that means less IPC for UK and with the use of German Subs denying them even more IPC and strengthening the position in that over all location in preperation for a possible US assault through the Med. Also it goes some way towards weakening the UK financially thus freeing up the Germans to concentrate on the USSR on G3/G4 onwards.
If perhaps this does work i can imagine that even if the eventual push into Russia stalls/slows it will still hold the ability to succesfully repel any US invasion on Europe and the use of strategic bombing on Russian Factory’s to slow production down. And with the IPC gained from bonus’s and acquired IPC from annexed country’s will eventually help Germany to victory at Moscow.
Though we could just ignore all this and just blitz towards Moscow :-)
Personally though i think this is a clever idea, far better use of the resources and allows stronger cooperation between the Axis powers, weakens UK, punishes USSR into decline albeit a slow one and ensure the US has to make more choices when it comes to war in Africa or Europe and therefore more of a chance to make mistakes.

RE: German Strategy: Mediterranean Offensive
I really like the idea of this Med push with the German Fleet, think i’m going to try it out in my next game. Plus thinking about it in the two games i’ve played so far i have not been agressive enough on following up on the additional IPC bonus gained for Germany (amounts to +20 IPC i believe) if all objectives are met.
And i imagine if you are in a position as Germany to claim that extra 20IPC including the french territories IPC that would greatly help with the war effort and cause the US some trouble as it would have less weak contact points to choose from when it does come round to attack through Africa or Europe making the Med and Africa plenty harder to take control of.
I don’t have the game to hand but with the German bonus IPC and the fact by G2 France should have added it’s IPC to Germany, Germany should be making something close to what the US does in it’s war IPC collection, is that correct?
