@colonel-ace I love it when people call it a “TORONTO” raid.

RE: Question Regarding Normandy/Bordeaux
@barnee If a realistic opportunity to do Sealion is on the table,I want the factory, and to a lesser extent, the NB in normandy.I also like to eliminate the french inf/art so they can’t be taking holland. If allies land in normandy later they have to be dealt with even if it is still owned by france.

RE: The Italian playbook
When they come out with a War of 1812 game, then we can conduct a toronto raid.

RE: [Global 1940] Island Bombardment
I don’t agree. An amphibious assault is a concentrated attack on a section of coastline chosen by the attacker.Naval gunfire can be directed at defending forces near the coast. An airbase can easily be far inland, and naval bases are usually well protected by shore guns and mines.

RE: Japanese Response to KJF
Of course you may have already done a J1 DOW and now are facing KJF.I’d keep buying land units and back up the navy close to asian ABs and NBs

RE: Transport to hostile sz then land units in friendly territory
@genken Since sz 35 is not hostile, you would transport your troops to Egypt on your non-combat move(NCM).Keep in mind you need to own BOTH Egypt and Transjordan at the beginning of your turn to move your navy through suez canal. If the battle in sz15 goes badly and you retreat to sz 34,you can still have the transport join your fleet in sz34 and unload troops to Egypt from there as a NCM.

RE: [Global 1940] One rule to balance it?
@simon33 I really like Crocketts France 1st idea.Always seems to me that it’s too easy for germany to kill szs110+111+106? as well as taking Paris.Historically,Germany needed the luftwaffe to defeat France. In early june1940 France had just replaced their top commander and was not yet at war with Italy.
I would suggest Frances 1st turn be restricted to non-combat.For their 19ipcs ,I place a TT in sz 93 to start plus 12ipc to spend on units.Keep in mind, not being at war with Italy ,France can pass through or park in szs95,96,97. -
RE: Kamikaze in Classic 3rd Edition
So I’ve just been playing my old 98 hasbro CD game with kamakazi on.Many will recall that the CD was very glitchy,so a number of patches became available to download .I run it with a patch from A&AWC installed about 2010.Selecting the kamakazi option does NOT mean you can try to crash your planes into selected targets.lt simply allows any player to use all of their fighter movement on their combat move.100% the fighter will be lost before the end of your turn…hence the name kamakazi. It can still be lost to AA guns,or combat loss before literally running out of gas.
On the CD software the 1st fighters to go into battle are the 1st lost. This is important to know because, after the combat is resolved and a number of fighters remain to land ,it’s best to have the ones with most movement left.To test ,on J1 I attacked India with 2 inf 1 fgt from FIC plus 1 fgt(a kami) from philipines, making sure ,using the computer mouse ,to bring the kami in 1st.Therefore when I chose a fgt as 1 of my 2 casualties, the kami died and I was left with a fgt with 3 spaces of ncm available -
RE: Sealion
There is a name,(Scotch broth or something)for this sealion method. So some drawbacks may include,
#1 your transport fleet is vunerable in sz 111 after dropping off the 1st wave in scotland.
#2 If allies park a surface warship in sz 112 on non-combat,you can,t load your 2nd wave .I’m assuming your troops are coming from West germ or Norway…Maybe Italian air can deal with this .
#3 USA gets one more turn to build more units to destroy your fleet after you take london.BTW remember to take Eire from scotland .It takes away a possible landing spot.
Good luck and watch out for the USSR. -
RE: Goose's Axis & Allies 1940 House Rules Thread
@hengst This house rules forum is full of ideas. To avoid scripted games you need a varaiety ways to win or lose a game in a reasonable amount of time ,eg 8 to 12 rounds.BBR and 3G40 are rulesets that encourage you to win by achieving various victory objectives.(not just victory cities)
3G40 changes turn order, merges Anzac into UKPacific, and sticks pretty close to oob rules.BBR is more complex than oob and is real popular. Both are designed to play in 1 day and to be able to declare a winner.

RE: A&A 1940 Global: Japanese invasion of Russia and Expeditionary Fleet to Europe
@shadowhawk I can’t argue with that.Take out india 1st and then go toward Egypt and middle east to obtain victory on the Europe side.

RE: A&A 1940 Global: Japanese invasion of Russia and Expeditionary Fleet to Europe
@Classified_22 I don’t want to discourage you from trying novel strategies. They’re interesting and fun,but will likely be defeated by good players(I’m not including myself in that category)
With your G1 naval buy and depending on how battles went, the allies should be wary of a possible sealion threat.Watch to see what Russia buys and where they position their forces. If they decide to attack Japan, the 6 Mongolians will stay put.I guess your surprize move is using TTs to drop an army into northern Russia from sz 127.I reccommend using the units from Norway and Finland. If you take Leningrad you get the AB,NB,Minor fac+5 ipc bonus but that spot is not hard to get overland and safer to use baltic sea if using TTs.
Taking Archengal negates Russias 5ipc lend lease bonus.Nemetsia is worth 0,but so remote that it’s harder for Russia to contain you and close enough for it to be possible to bring over Japanese air from china.
I just want to say that I’ve made the mistake of splitting up my German army invading Russia.I lost all my slow movers because I underestimated the power of a lot of inf with just a few tanks and planes.
Let us know what you like to buy G2. -
RE: Transports required?
@SuperbattleshipYamato I like your"it’s game design"answer. With all the factors that went into developing A&A Global 40,they did a good job.If we really want to tweek something it’s a house rule.
I think it would be historically accurate to have some political (bonus?)consequence for gaining or losing the 2 Italian islands. -
RE: A&A 1940 Global: Japanese invasion of Russia and Expeditionary Fleet to Europe
@shadowhawk OK,I see this is turning into a sealion discussion which is fine enough. We should get back to what this thread was about initially.
Classified_22
8 days agoWhat are you guy’s opinion on the following turn sequence for Axis powers
G1: build CV, DD, and SS–Germany takes France and prepares for Sea Lion + Russian invasion.
Many of us would read that as Germany has to prepare to BE INVADED by Russia .I’d suggest that Classied_22 does not buy naval G1 and plans to with Japans help take out Russia 1st and maybe sealion later if the opportunity is there.Otherwise go for Cairo for the win. -
RE: Transports required?
@SuperbattleshipYamato . I don’t have a problem with UK being able to move overland to Eire with units that start in Scotland (which on the map includes N.Ireland)A mech starting in London UK1 is crossing a straight to activate EIre.Why can’t Italy move land units back and forth to Sicily from S Italy when they control both territories and the sz is NOT hostile?OK Denmark and Sweden different countries, but what if I’ve been in control of both and sz 113 for a round?
Where it gets me is when Germany invades Scotland from SZ 111,it is assumed they crossed over to N.Ireland even if Uk controls sz 109 and 119.Next Germany can take Eire without transports, thus denying a possible landing space for counter-attacking allied aircraft.
As for Sicily,I like that the game designers made it a separate territory probably because historically the allies used it as stepping stone to invade mainland Italy.Does anyone ever invade Sicily?I don’t recall it being discussed other than a cheesey way to get Russia more spreading communism bonuses. -
Transports required?
I need transports to go from Sicily to S.Italy 2mi and Denmark to Sweden 2.5mi but not from Scotland to Ireland 12mi.Why is that?

RE: A&A 1940 Global: Japanese invasion of Russia and Expeditionary Fleet to Europe
@shadowhawk USA bombers have nowhere to land if scotland and eire are unavailable. If Germanaby owns normandy factory by G2,new units can be placed in sz 110 G3.I think USA needs at least 4 loaded carriers + DD in sz 102 by USA turn 2 to kill what could be in sz 110.
Keep in mind , Germany is only committed to sealion when they spend their G2 money on TTs.If it does’nt look viable do something else. -
RE: A&A 1940 Global: Japanese invasion of Russia and Expeditionary Fleet to Europe
@shadowhawk When there is a legitimate Sealion threat I think USA is buying on the atlantic side rd 1+2.I agree that the"Expeditionary Fleet to Europe"half of this thread is different but ultimately unwise.Hell just stay close to sz 6 so you can build and transport land units out of Japan every turn. How about flying most of your air force to the Europe side?
sz 38 or 41 >iraq 4 spaces
suiyaun or yakut >nenetsia(beside archengal) 4 spaces
kwangsi(with AB) > romania or iraq 7spaces
sz 1 >qubec 4 spaces…that one is a crazy kamakazi -
RE: A&A 1940 Global: Japanese invasion of Russia and Expeditionary Fleet to Europe
@shadowhawk In keeping with the idea of sending the IJN to the europe map ,I have an alternate idea.J1 send IJN with transports to sz 33+34 (carolines and palau islands)This looks like the usual set-up to take Phil +some money islands J2.Instead attack Anzac, you may be blocked and have to settle for Queensland.Better if you can grab Sydney or New Zealand.(all 3 have NB)With NZ NB you can grab brazil and be in the allies underbelly threatening Africa,Gibralter etc
I’d actually be inclined to take Sydney 1st before setting off for S.Atlantic just like I think it would be best to take Calcutta before heading towards Med if that’s what you are determined to do.
Oh and it’s less distance to Moscow if you move through Northern China instead of siberia.Build an AB in Jehol to protect your coastline and extend aircraft range. -
