Destroying transport

Right. In fact transports don’t roll. They need other warships as protection. Only the other ships roll.

Just so I’m not second guessing myself, if there was a destroyer blocking you, you could still perform an amphibious assault if you aided the transport with fighters, right?

you can always make an amphibious assault with a transport… as long as the attacker wins whatever naval combat occurs in the SZ.  if a Destroyer and a transport attack a SZ for amp assault and there is an enemy destroyer there, combat occurs.  as long as the enemy is sunk, you can continue to amp assault the territory.  If its survives then your transports are sunk as they do not have any combat (or defense) roll.

After the combat round is finished, yes it can retreat.

But there are a lot of weird situations: imagine there’s a SZ containing an enemy sub and a destroyer and that you send the transport to make a landing, along with 2 fighters to clear the SZ. Since the enemy sub can’t hit the planes if it rolls a hit on 1 you’ll have to remove the transport as a casualty.

Hobbes is correct.  The destroyer must be in the battle, not just in the sea zone.

The rule as you describe it is from the 1986 edition. The computer game is probably based on that version.

With transports being completely defenseless in A&A1942 what is the best way to protect them? Keeping a pipeline into various areas seems much more difficult to obtain with this new rule. There also is no easy unit in the sea to produce and buy each round to stack next to them like infantry.

I have been hiding my transports and keeping them out of range as best as I can but that kills any real stream of units (for example from the UK into Norway). The best thing I have come up with so far is to try and build a buffer around the mass of transports. I just occupy all land zones or sea zones with at least one unit that aircraft cannot fly over so they will need to enter into combat before they can reach the transports. However, I find it to be costly and hard to maintain. Any suggestions would great!

Best/cheapest/most effective defense for transports is a loaded carrier and a destroyer (or two).  Destroyers are your fodder, and if you have to lose a plane the US can usually afford to send one to replace it.  If you need to stall the German navy place a destroyer by the Baltic and force Germany to lose air.

Like KH said, you can’t stall aircraft.

Yes - as long as there are enough movement steps to do so.
