In need of a new laptop

Looking to spend around 1000$ for a new laptop

The laptop is for :
1- school
2- video and movies
3- Adobe Indesign (a program that allows me to make journals)
4- Being able to play games is a bonus
5- HDMI output is a bonus

I’m not interested in HP (unless you have very good arguments). My current laptop (HP) failed me

Hesitating between Sony Vaio and Apple (apple is more than 1000$ though). Some suggested the notebook (the small computer, cheap, but great for school only)

yea, they are available for the US. I’m in Canada :(

meaning 999$ converted to about 1000++$ canadian. Add in the terrific shipping costs = above my 1000$ that I want to spend

I’ve looked on Ebay. But due to my lack of knowledge of Apple, I’d rather avoid it. I don’t enough to prevent someone from ripping me (not stealing money, but selling me something that isn’t worth that much)
