If it starts with just subs and transports, you can ignore them.

Is Japan amphibious assaulting Korea?

If it starts with just subs and transports, you can ignore them.

You can ignore them if you are just moving through.  If there is an amphibious assault (or you just end your movement there) then I there is a battle. At least, that’s how I read it.

Now I have 2 questions.  If unescorted transports try an amphibious assault and the defender scrambles, can the attacker retreat or are the transports all sunk?

Con you scramble against shipped parked in your waters if they are not conducting an amphibious assault, or is the latter required to for a sea battle first?

But is there even one round for them to survive?? Aren’t they all gone? Or this is the only exception to “the transports are all automatically sunk” rule? For example in the carrier retreat thread, someone asked if it was possible for warships to roll instead of autosinking so they could retreat from the surving transports and the answer was that that move was invalid as there is no rolling vs transports.

There is no rolling versus defenseless transports.  By definition, transports that can retreat are not defenseless, so combat would be conducted normally.
