RE: Troubles playing japan
First of all, I want to say that USA committing any purchases to the pacific is a mistake.
I can’t agree with this 100% anymore. The winner of the most recent TOC, epikinion, used a USPac strat. Another elite player, williamilsanguinario, also has been doing this as of late
That said, assuming the US commits to the Pacific…
1. Japan should always sink the US fleet at pearl harbor.
But you don’t know that there’s a commitment because Japan moves first. I generally agree that Pearl is important. However, “always” is too strong.

RE: What should be the first actions taken by Germany at the beginning of the game?
That’s why under Caspian Sub and tripleA ladder rules you can’t attack an enemy capital with ground troops in your first turn.
Like you mentioned, it turns a wonderful game into a coin flip and spoils the fun.

RE: Weapons Development Chart
You are talking about the correct game, right? Revised, not 1942? Isn’t the weapons development chart basically just a list of the six techs and if a country gets it, you put the little marker with their flag next to it? If the one that comes with the game is too garish for your taste, couldn’t you just write the names of the techs on a sheet of paper?
A lot of people still play this game, but AFAIK all on tripleA. It’s more convenient than using a board, and easier to find opponents. However, most (95%?) people don’t play tech. Hope to see you on the (virtual) Revised battlefield soon.

Thank you for the input, marineiguana. Great stuff (although 1 typo - R can only attack Ukr with 3 inf R1, not 4).
I can’t add anything of value to that advice. However I would like to additionally quibble with Wolfshanze:

messing with the UK or its seazones - after the boats are sank in turn one - is not usually a feasible option vs a competent player in a KGF. They’re not going to leave their main fleet where you can sink it or leave the island undefended. Continuing efforts in this direction usually lead to a loss.

Revised is far from dead. The board game may not be produced any longer but at any given moment at a popular online site there might be 5 games of revised underway and 0-1 of 1942. It’s my opinion that the 1942 edition was not an improvement on revised.
