    • RE: Did The Caspian Sub Group Die?

      On the Caspian Sub thing, I know the creator also, we’ve played a few times.  I introduced AA50 to him a couple months ago.  We sat down and playtested it a few times.  He wasn’t very impressed.  He thought the game was broke and that Allies could win nearly every time though he did admit that it was an early assessment.  He’s getting into some tournament chess like myself.  I’ve been playing it for a while and told him he would be good at it.

      He’s got a brilliant mind for strategy games.  I have learned a lot from him.  If he wanted to he could do very well at AA50.  He was the only one at GenCon to win Smorey’s Axis and Allies tournament for Revised alone!  We’ll probably play again soon and I am going to talk to him about Csub!

      I kept a few of his articles- his tactical articles are still very valuable for the AA50 game- but not the strategic ones anymore as they were geared toward Revised

      HELP!!!

      I’m in a tournament game and I am having trouble getting the toolbar to show all of a sudden.  I opened it and it wasn’t there.  I tried downloading it again and restarting my computer and it doesn’t show.  I’m gonna try reinstalling it again (good thing the maps are saved on the forum).  I have the file and it says that it is turned “on” but it doesn’t show.  The infobar is showing but not the toolbar.  Can anyone help??? :-(

    • RE: A Serious Discussion of Technologies in 1941

      @U-505:

      You can’t identify the weaker techs because for every tech there is a country that benefits more than others. For example, Improved shipyards help Japan, UK and US but do little for Germany and Russia.

      Your best bet would be to dumb down the more powerful techs

      I think for heavy bombers, an attack 5/defense 2 and +2 damage on SBRs is adequate. No unit(except rockets) should ever auto-hit in a game.

      LRA should add only 1 move instead of 2 to the range of aircraft.

      And there should be a limit to the number of infantry capable of being moved as mech infantry, such as 1 or 2 per turn. Or keep the unlimited number of moves, but limit it to being used only during non-combat.

      I think this is the right idea here, however, it very difficult to “measure” the value of the tech because of the different variables involved- what country gets them and at what time in the game, etc.- all left to chance.  Might as well play paper, rock, scissors to see who wins the game.
      Just say “no” to tech- except for casual games of course.

      I’ve just started playing online and I am really enjoying it.  Thanks to everyone for the help and my apologies to Jennifer who I ripped on about online AA games.  Even though I think FTF is still better, PBF/online has been both convienient and enjoyable.  Thanks again.

      Questions:
      What is the 1-10 order?  A ranking or something or just a place spot?  Is this a single elimination tourny or Swiss style??
      Of the 2 new optional rules Larry gave us in his updated FAQs (Jan 12th), what will be used?  Will we use the escort rule and/or the Black Sea closed rule or none of them???

      @Cmdr:

      I did, three times.  Germany got royally stomped all three times.

      Japan didn’t even have a prayer of getting anything of any reasonable strength to Russia before Berlin fell to the Russians. (Likewise, England and America didn’t have a chance to bring any real units to Europe before Berlin fell to Russia.)

      It was akin to playing the allies vs the TripleA AI, but when the TripleAI was drunk.  If you know what I mean.

      I seen the same thing, gotta agree with you on this one!  You have to play with NOs in AA50, especially for Italy’s sake- they can’t survive, neither Axis in Europe without them.

      Finally, someone with some sense.  3 or 16 %-who cares its too dicey- might as well play russian roulette or craps.  If you tech people “love” tech so much than you guys can play me everytime and I’ll start out with heavy bombers and you- nothing.  I mean c’mon “tech doesn’t effect the game that much right???”

      Come on.  Why should someone just give you a free tech?  Are you that insecure in your strategy?  Just because we “tech players” love tech so much, doesn’t mean that we even use tech in every single game.  It’s just an additional strategic option which also happens to be very historical.

      Look, I think the people deserve a CHOICE to turn the option on or off as well as the NOs.  Also, what about the 2 new optional rules that Larry gave us in the new FAQs- use them or no???

      Questioneer

      Haven’t you been reading the posts?  It has been proposed and accepted that players could request and play non-tech games.

      In my opinion, for the 2 new optional rules, the Intercepter rule would help shut up the whining about SBRs, so I say use it.  Personally, in my group’s games, SBR is rarely used, so, the new rule won’t affect us much.  For the closing of the Dardanelles, it will definitely change our games by keeping Italy off of Russia’s back, but the rule is more historical, so I also say let’s use it.

      Comment1:
      Historical???  LOL  Measuring actual research and development with dice- right lol :lol:

      Comment2:
      Sorry, No-tech games are cool, haven’t been keeping up- this forum is huge you know.

      Comment3:
      Agree with 1st optional rule, but the 2nd (close black sea)- would that unbalance the game to allies a bit though???- debatable.

    • RE: A Serious Discussion of Technologies in 1941

      The problem with tech is that as Axis you need to get the NO’s ASAP in order to have some comfortable buying cushion for them.
      Now your strategy is –strive to get NO’s --to get tech --to blow out opponent.  This strategy just seem too linear.

      Also, the 3% chance is skewed thinking.  Heavy Bombers is not the only bone-crushing tech.

      Certain tech can be devastating for certain powers depending on who gets them.
      The US, because of its location of safety on the map and its diverse battlefronts, can utilize more of the tech than other nations, that will increase the 3% to 6%, 12% or over 20%- big difference.
      I don’t want my game decided by large amounts of chance like that.  Its like playing roulette- or Russian roulette for that matter!

      Like I’ve said before, I think playing with tech is fun, and even though it is much better than Revised, it still skews the game greatly.  In FTF tournaments, they never play with tech because of this very logical reasoning.  IMHO-leave tech for entertainment night.

      @Cmdr:

      Yes, the NOs balance the game in my opinion.

      Without them, you’d almost have to give the Axis a significant bid that deployed in certain rounds. (Like +18 IPC on rounds 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 12, 15 and 20) to account for not having the National Objectives.  That would be split evenly among all three axis powers, btw.

      I’m curious, have you played AA50 w/o NOs and tech to really see the differences???  I have, but only once.  It does changed the strategy a bit, and yes I do believe the bid goes to the Axis for sure.

      Still looking for an opponent. I would prefer a '41 scenario with NO’s, but I’m flexible on the set up. I mainly want to work through the mechanics of play on this forum and try out some opening strategies.

      Thanks in advance.

      I’ll play you.  41-version, NOs- yes, but no tech.  You want Allies or Axis?  Still wanna go??

      I only got a game in using the battlemap myself, but I am a long time AA player- Classic (when I was a kid) Revised, Europe, Pacific etc. and I’ve played AA50 about 7 times FTF (face-to-face games) with some good tourney players.

    • RE: AA50 League and/or Tournaments

      @U-505:

      And just remember that radar doesn’t make SBR’s unprofitable. It only brings the cost/benefit numbers back to a relatively normal level with the advantage still being with the bombers. You knock twice as many bombers out, but the ones that survive still do double damage. You can figure [6 bombers v. radar] means on average 2 lost bombers with 4 remaining bombers rolling 8 damage dice as opposed to [6 bombers v. AA] with on average 1 lost bomber and 5 remaining bombers rolling 5 damage dice. Radar doesn’t exactly offset heavy bombers completely.

      And heavy bombers don’t just help with SBR’s. They affect the entire gameboard. This game isn’t so much about winning the dice battles. It is more about leverage. Forcing your opponent to abandon a weak position without having to risk large amounts of your units. And that includes naval as well. All of those people who say that Japan can stop a US SBR campaign with Japan landing in Alaska can’t do that against heavy bombers. Ask yourself what Japanese player is going to place their navy within range of US heavy bombers just to try and slow down bomber production.

      The fact remains that if the US, Japan, Germany, or UK get heavy bombers on their first turn, it is over for the vast majority of games. The only ones that can be salvaged when your opponent does that are the ones where you happen to roll heavy bombers early as well and hopefully without a massive tech investment that would cripple your unit production which is very slim indeed.

      I don’t really care anymore. If we are allowed to make gentleman’s agreements about not purchasing tech in a game then I’m happy. And if I play a game with tech and I manage to win a game because I lucked into heavy bombers or any other exactly right tech rolled at exactly the right moment then I’ll know it was a cheap win that I didn’t deserve. At least I’ll admit it. I won’t pretend it was some kind of master strategy.

      @questioneer:

      KGF, dead in AA50???-brave words my friend.  Oh its alive, and even better than Revised if you play the Allies right and hit Europe hard.  Against a forceful KGF, Japan’s best moves are to either
      a.) try hitting the U.S. through Alaska- hard!! or
      b.) get to Africa ASAP and help Italy.

      Yes, Alaska path is the way to counter KGF, and by itself alone it’s a good reason to even not trying KGF. USA can have 5 more IPCs now with NOs, but Japan will have at least 10 more from the same source, probably 15. Anyway, the fun thing is that Japan can go Alaska path and attack Africa at the same time because they have enough income.

      DM said you cannot land directly in wcan. Well, not from Japan, but you can from bur or sfe. Simply land guys there from Japan and setup a 4x4 chain. And there are many wicked tricks for Japan when you start with 5 trannies.

      You should take techs into account, but that’s another history. I’m not sure if I would play a game without techs or without NOs

      Too risky trying KGF. And adds no fun to the gameplay -> I would not try it even against a novice player

      Yes, I’m under the assumption that this is a game w/o tech.  It seems like half the people play with tech and half don’t.  The tech debate is of course for another thread- I won’t get into that.  But yes KGF will work with well in the 41 with NOs or w/o NOs.

      Under the above assumptions, if you did go at Alaska, you have to invest in that plan all the way, or it will not work.  But when you do, then you sacrifice other fronts and the Brits and Russians remain a little stronger than usual.  You will give up something.  I personally feel the best plan is to help Italy in Africa.  I would like to investigate in the Alaskan plan a little further with the counterattacks to this and see though.

      The game is simply about balance and inbalances in material, space and levering incomes.  Finding these imbalances quickly leans to your advantage.
