If no other countries came to the Soviets defense Germany would have been able to defeat them if they had gone after them first.
But once UK and France were in it because of taking Poland, Germany should have never bothered attacking Russia until it had dealt with UK. At the battle of Dunkirk when 200,000 UK troops were trapped, all Germany had to do was come in at full force quickly with all of its forces, naval and air included, and capture the UK transports and all the men. Then using their own transports gone accross the channel and put UK away. At that time (1940) UK was not heavily defended and US had not amassed a large contingent yet. If Germany had done this UK would have fallen and then Germany could then have went all out Russia while holding the Atlantic wall. The Allies would have to come from accross the ocean if they wanted to try an assault, they would no longer have their staging area in UK as they did. 8-)

RE: Survival question
I agree with LT04 as well. You gotta go with the local help. The med student is probably not that adept any way, based upon what I have seen at our hospitals.
Good call LT04. 8-) -
RE: Haven't played Axis and Allies in forever!
We played a 5 player AA50 game 42 set-up two weeks ago and we actually managed to finish it in about 9 hours with the Allies winning. I was playing Russia and basically bought only all men until the last few turns when I switched to all tanks instead. It is kinda of boring game as Russia, as you just simply have to hold on until UK and US (somewhat) come to your rescue. You must take back what you lose to Germany every turn so as to keep the “buffer zone” away from Moscow. It was actually really cool having that many players, as we have only been able to do that on occasions, as everybody is never available on the same day. 8-)

RE: Star Wars Quirks
I agree with the inconsistencies mentioned about the EP 1, 2, 3 vs. 4, 5 & 6. I think Lucas should have never bothered with the “Clone Wars” and did a trilogy on the “Knights of the Old Repulic” 1000 years or so before the first Death Star explosion instead. That way you start with all new caracters and the end plot is not already known and anti-climactic.
If you have ever read Darth Bane 1 and 2 you know what I am talking about. Imagine thousands of Sith fighting against thousands of Jedi, all in their prime, the battles would be glorious and the action would never stop. Also the way Bane deceives everyone, even his own kind, is true Sith tactics and he is the one who created “The Rule of Two”. That would be something to see. He was ever to make more SW movies that is where I would go.
The only other choicce is to get all the original cast members back and do a series after EP6, when aliens come from a different galaxy and invade. This would include Luke as the head of the New Jedi order, Lea and Han married, all their Jedi kids, etc.
EP1 to 3 are definitely good, mostly duer to effects and battles, but lack story and depth like the originals had. -
RE: Terminator 4
Look’s like it will be pretty good. The futuristic war scenario is one I have always liked. Some of the previews look quite amazing for the special effects and filming.
Imagine a version of A&A that is based upon a Terminator type of story, with the machines against the humans. It opens up a whole new world of posibilities and weapons. 8-) -
RE: Would the Allies lost if the USSR joined the Axis
I would say yes the Allies would most likely have lost. The reasoning is that if Germany’s back was protected by Russia and then Russia could concentrate on the middle east, India and assist Italy with Africa, all of Asia, Africa and Europe would be under Axis control quite quickly ajnd easily. Russia could then help Germany in the defense of Western Europe and Scandinavia and then it could start building its own fleet and airforce to assist Germany against the UK in the Atlantic and could help Japan against US in the Pacific. A game of Axis and Allies played that way would be over quickly and I think it would have been the same in real life. It would be fun to try as the Allies to see just how overwhelming it would really be and how long you could hold out. Me thinks not to long. :-)

RE: Basic strategies for Axis
I agree with the shield and sword statement. It is my experience that Germany on its first turn should buy a transport for Italy and all men. Regroup your tanks and all your infantry into Eastern Europe and plan to take Karelia on turn 3 if possible. Turn 2 can work but can be costly. Germany should buy mostly all men on turn two and three as well and move them into Eastern Europr so as to overwhelm Russia and get ahead of their infantry total. Once Germany has more infantry than Russia attack Karelia with men and tanks only, save your planes. From Italy send two full transports every turn into Egypt and Trans Jordan until you secure the Suez and subsiquently Africa. Meanwhile Japan hits China, and India and then all out Russia, while still maintaining suppremacy in the Pacific by staying one step ahead of the US and as someone else mentioned take out as many US and UK ships as possible while not over commiting your fleet and only losing the cheap expendable replaceable pieces. An IC is a good idea if you are sure you can hold it: Manchuria is good to go after Russia, but can be reinforced by Japan transports anyway, FIC is safer but India is the best of both if you can capture and hold it, because it is two squares “a tank blitz” away from Caucauscus and Trans-Jordan and you can move fleet through the Suez if needed and assist Germany in conquering Africa as required. Not to mention taking precious money away from the UK. Japan would then purchase three tanks every round for India (or FIC) and keep that up until Russia falls. From India or FIC you can also launch a strike on Australia and New Zealand to further hurt UK. If UK buys an IC on India, Japan MUST capture it at all costs or UK will get the upper hand and its game over. If Germany and Japan hit fast and hard as a unit first at UK to bankrupt and “stall” them and get the valuable money they need and at US to “stall” them, then maintain that stall on both of them and go all out Russia so as to hit Moscow on the 5th or 6th turn from both sides, the Axis will have an IPC victory easily or if using victory cities (AA50 and new) or complete victory rules they will be on their way to world domination. :-)

RE: Subs… what's the point?
I agree with Texcap as I have used subs in a similar manner multple times. Not only effective for US but Japan can do the same to the US by building their sub fleet to add to the starting ships and moving in so as to be two sea squares away from Western US sea square. This forces US to concentrate on the Pacific and eliviates Germany from dealing with three on one tactics. Japan should concentrate on the land battle but should never neglect the sea as ultimately it will be their downfall if they do not protect their sea spaces. I have won with both US and Japan by forcing the envelope with subs. Germany can buy subs but must insure that it is not a waste of time and money, it will force UK to build Destroyers and Germany can counter with subs and planes before UK can use their destroyers staying one step ahead; but only if Russia is contained and losing ground. If Germnay manages to gain control of the Atlantic they will most likely win. A good trick is for Germany to purchase an IC on France and build transports and subs in the Med after Italy has moved its fleet to sea square south of France to protect transports, that way Germany can assist Italy and vise versa. This is for the AA50 game on course. This way Germany can defend against allied naval wanting access to the Med and can re-inforce Italy in the Middle East and hit Russia and India from there. Also this will help Italy secure its bonus money. Once the combined fleet is large enough you can move it into the Altantic adjacent to France, so it can reach UK and so you can add new untis to it and stay ahead of the Allies, thus rulling the Atlantic. Remember subs are a compliment to the rest of your naval force and are the cheap units you want to protect your expensive investments. You do not feel bad “trading pieces” with an opponent who is loosing more expensive pieces in return. :-)
