RE: What's the worst luck you've had in trying to take a territory?
It was a game of Axis and Allies Europe. I was Germany and had amassed a massive stack of stuff to take down Moscow. Of my six planes, five were shot down by antiaircraft fire. I wasn’t too worried though because I still had more units than the Russians, and mine were of higher quality too.
I had something like ninety pips of offense–for an average of 15 hits per round–and managed to score only six hits. The Russians had an above average roll and it was all downhill from there, and my beautiful stack was wiped out. After checking an odds calculator I discovered that I had just lost a 99.99% battle.
I remember suppressing the urge to go out to the garage, douse the game in lighter fluid and have an Axis and Allies bonfire, but in retrospect I should’ve just done it because I owned the board and it really would’ve been cathartic.
Stupid AA guns.

RE: AA50 re release
Well, let’s be honest, we didn’t really need all those pieces anyway. If they were to take away 100 units and replace them with 50 chips I’d be more than happy.
I’m sure there’s going to be some rules or setup changes to this version of 1942, too, because as it stands under AA50 that scenario is ridiculously difficult for the Axis to win among experienced players (from what I’ve seen).

RE: Which is better 41 or 42?
'41 is better. '42 is IMO heavily weighted toward the Allies.
-
RE: What do you do with the Americans in your "standard game?
I go exclusively Pacific in either '41 or '42. Always play with NOs.

RE: What is LL?
It’s an interesting tradeoff. As an attacker you gain from never having a 90% battle blow up in your face, but you lose because you’ll also never have a successful attack that leaves you with “bonus” units that should’ve died had the defender rolled better. I imagine you’d be perfectly happy with that.
I’d like to try the variant sometime. It doesn’t strike me as Low Luck so much as Low Frustration. :-D

RE: German Industrial Complexes
Now this is an interesting topic.
The idea of building a factory in Norway is very interesting, but at first glance I don’t see how it would work. You can only build three units a turn, and I would think Russia would set up Finland as a dead zone so you wouldn’t be able to advance easily. And then the UK should set up to take the territory as soon as possible. Has this worked for you in a competitive (tournament) game? If so, could you share a link? I’d love to see how it played out.
To me France seems ideal. After that, spend your first 30 bucks on 10 infantry and any remainder on French armor. That way you can always have a nice stack going East. Or if you’re in the situation that so often happens where Germany is waiting for help from the Japanese, never underestimate the ability to draft 14 or 15 infantry a turn to help hold out.
I would think, though I haven’t played enough to be sure, that building in any 2 IPC territory just isn’t going to be worth it (unless it’s Egypt, maybe, where you’re never going to get stuff there ever again otherwise).

RE: Can the Allies win in 1942?
Who says you need to keep it?
Maybe you don’t. I’ve played the scenario a few times and I think it very well might be worth trying to save; you can delay British landings for a turn or two and that might be worth the 14 bucks you blow on it. But I’m not sure.

RE: Why is 1942 scenario so unpopular???
When I first got AA50 my friends and I played solely on the 1942 version because we figured it have the closest feel to our old Axis and Allies games. It’s pretty good, but having played 1941 a little recently I think it gives players much more flexibility and the opening moves feel less scripted. Maybe that is why '42 isn’t too popular so far.
I hope more people start playing it though, because I want to find out if people agree with me that the Axis needs a bid (or some other help) to give them a chance of winning against a competent Allied player.

RE: Can the Allies win in 1942?
I think the Axis is pretty well hosed in 1942. So long as the USA goes Pacific only, it can ALWAYS hold Hawaii, which means that barring freak circumstances Germany has to take Moscow (I assume we’re using a 13 VC victory condition here). That’s not going to be easy… on G1, you HAVE to build to the Baltic fleet if you want to have any chance of keeping it, and you need to buy at least a carrier. So now you’re down from $37 to $23. France is underdefended, so you’re going to need to divert some of your G1 Berlin troops there. You’re going to need to send some stuff down to Africa. By the time you’re done, you’re way, way behind in keeping parity with Russia on the Eastern Front. It’s hard to come back, too, because you’re limited to building ten units. You can build a factory in France or Poland, but you want to do it early, and on G1 you just don’t have a ton of cash.
I only play offline, so I don’t know if that experience jibes with what you guys are seeing. But on G1 you have a country that is way, way overextended. Unlike with the Allies, if you screw up even a little you can blow your chances of winning.
I’m not sure if the game needs a “fix” yet, but two ideas I’d like to try:
-
Germany starts with a bomber in France. This would make it a lot easier to sink Allied shipping early on and take some of the heat off of Western Europe.
-
The Skagerrak acts like the Suez Canal, and is impassible to ships unless you control both Northwest Europe and Norway at the beginning of your turn. (This isn’t my idea; someone over at another forum came up with it.) It could really help breathe a lot of life into Germany’s Baltic fleet, since it’s generally only going to be hit with planes.

RE: Quick rules Q: landing fighters on carriers
Thanks, that was what I thought too. The thing that threw me for a loop was that I downloaded TripleA and it doesn’t look like they allow that sort of move, so I wanted to make sure I wasn’t playing it wrong all these years! :-)

Quick rules Q: landing fighters on carriers
Quick question.
Assume that we’re playing the 1942 setup. It’s Japan’s first turn. Japan has a carrier in the Caroline Islands sea zone (SZ 51) and a fighter in Tokyo. Japan wants to attack the Hawaii sea zone (SZ 53). That sea zone is four spaces away from Tokyo.
So Japan moves the fighter (and some other units) to SZ 53, but not the Caroline Islands carrier, which would be that fighter’s only possible landing space. During non-combat movement, Japan will move the carrier to SZ 53, which is vulnerable to US attack, only if the fighter with zero movement remaining survives. If it doesn’t, the carrier will move somewhere else.
Is that permitted? Or does the carrier HAVE TO move to SZ 53 during combat movement?

RE: Axis and Allies Enhanced: Anniversary Edition
If you’re going to delete my posts, you should delete hers as well–there is absolutely no way that she owns a copyright on that title. I would think that this site and this hobby deserves better than to let obvious lies stand while deleting the posts of people who point them out.
I will delete every post that is a whining post. Jennifer is not complaining but basically answering the whiners and its sidetracking the thread.
You and the other have had way too many posts where you just complain. Look at your total posts and compare them to posts that are not about the whining sound. I could give you more latitude if you have 1,000 posts and you got 5 complaining posts, but your ratio is like 98% complaining posts. enough.

Other than that your basically just making house rules for a game that has been published and NOBODY can claim anything because 100% of all the house rules came from other people who took the rules and called it their own.

RE: UK: The Italian Fleet Gambit
Wouldn’t it actually be titled “The British Bomber Gambit?” :-D
If I’m the Axis and I know it’s coming, I think I have a counter. But I’ll need to play it out first to see if it works.

RE: Axis and Allies Enhanced: Anniversary Edition
I just think it’s lame to copy his rules from a different game and add them to the new game and label them under someone elses previously established name.
I agree completely. The three guys you mentioned cared for and nurtured the AARe ruleset for YEARS, and now it’s basically been hijacked out from under them.
The only possible reason to call the Jenny ruleset “Enhanced” is to confuse newbies or people like me who play a lot offline but don’t really keep track of the online scene. And then to keep at it when the original three ask nicely to desist is boorish and arrogant.
I for one will never play AA50:Jenny, but if the real Enhanced rules come out once you guys get a sense of the game’s balance please keep us informed.

RE: Axis and Allies Enhanced: Anniversary Edition
Yeah, I don’t want to stir anything up but it doesn’t seem right to adapt the “Enhanced” moniker without the endorsement of the original AARe guys.
Besides, AA50 hasn’t had time to settle yet. I think over a year passed from the release of AAR to the development of AARe, and that’s good because apart from a little clunkiness with subs, AARe was an excellent ruleset. You could tell that the collaborators behind it had played a LOT of games. I don’t think anyone can really say that so far in the three or so months AA50 has been out.

How much of a hand have axis_roll, cousin_joe, and the other folks had in this development?

RE: After Action Reports
heh, they kept trying to reposition where they placed it. but i generally had fighters on finland and france, and the bomber in germany. so the reach wasn’t difficult. it was ammusing as the uk build a lot of tanks their first turn, and never got to use them
Did the UK sink your Baltic fleet on B1?
