    • RE: HBG Themed WW2 & WW1 Dice

I voted for “I want other items (please list)”, among others.

Young Grasshopper had this great idea in one of his very informing videos. We need coloured dice with hit markers. For example:

      • ordinary BLUE dice with one side marked with a crosshair, explosion, skull or something to indicate a hit/kill
      • ordinary GREEN dice with two sides marked as said
      • ordinary YELLOW dice with three sides marked as said
      • ordinary RED dice with four sides marked as said
      • ordinary BLACK dice with five sides marked as said

The point is that the different colour of each dice represents a differant number of hits.

If I attack with two inf, one art, one tank and one tac, I today have to roll

      1. one dice @ 1
      2. two dice @ 2
      3. one dice @ 3
      4. one dice @ 4

That is four rolls and I must remember how many hits for every roll. Then the oponent does the same thing. This takes time.

However, if HBG had dice as explained above, I could simply grab one blue dice, two green, one yellow and one red. I could roll them all at once, in one throw. And then just count the total number of crosshair, explosions or whatever the dice are showing to represent hits.

This would save a lot of time in each game!! Subs, AAA, offshore bombardment etc might need to be rolled individually, but we would still save a lot of time on all other combat rolls.

Young Grasshopper also said that the combat board should have different colours for each section, to make it easier to see what colour we should roll for @ 2 and so on. That would be nice, but I don’t think that is needed, after we learn the colour of the dice representing two hits on it’s six sides.

    • Question about conquering damaged IC

If a damaged IC (or NB or AB) is damaged and then captured, what happens to the damage? Is it automaticly repaired or must the new owner pay to fix it?

In a game last weekend, both Germany and Italy conducted SBR on the Russian mIC in Ukraina. It was eventually maximum damaged and Russia didn’t bother to have it repaired. Then Italy captured Ukraina. But did Italy capture a damaged or a fully operational mIC?

    • RE: Question about damaged carrier and planes landing

Thank you guys, that was very helpful.

But when will this “trapped cargo” situation the rule book mentions occur? Only if the carrier had one friendly plane from another nation, and the owner of the carrier moved it into an attack, in order to use the one free space for his own fighter, coming from somewhere else? But he got two hits, so his own fighter is gone and the carrier is damaged? Then the friendly fighter cannot do anything until the carrier is fixed next round or so?

    • RE: Medals for A&A countries

Looking for the most supreme medal/order of each country? Or the most “WW2-like” medal/order of that country? Or just any typical bravery medal of each country?

Japan should be the Order of the Golden kite: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Golden_Kite

UK the Victoria Cross: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Cross Personally I tink the DSO it looks better: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distinguished_Service_Order

UK in India, maybe Indian order of merit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Order_of_Merit

Italy could the medal for military valor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Military_Valor

    • Question about damaged carrier and planes landing

I have a question about the carrier as a capital ship, taking two hits to kill.

Imagine there is a carrier with two planes on it. They all belong to the same nation, and are the only pices this nation has in this very sea zone. Then the carrier is attacked, let’s say by an enemy destroyer. The destroyer scores one hit, and the carrier or the planes scores a hit as well. So the destroyer is gone and combat is over.

However, the defending player choose to let the carrier take the hit, since it is a capital ship. So she flips it over on it’s side. From what I understand, the carrier is now damaged.

And damaged carriers cannot conduct air operations? Which means the planes, if they cannot land on a different friendly carrier in the same sea zone, can move 1 space in order to land, right? But if they still have no place to land, they are considered lost?

    • Malta

Have any of you gotten much out of Malta? The island played a relatively important role during the war, but that is never reflected in any game I’ve played.

The German player usually tend to invade Malta early, with minimal forces to take out the British fighter there. If he succeeds, he moves the troops to the African mainland afterwards. If he fails, usually the British player will land the fighter in North Africa in his turn.

After this, nothing happens on Malta.

Has anyone else managed to get Malta more into the game?

    • RE: Best Individual German Record

I went with Otto Kretschmer on this one. Maybe not the best one, it is impossible to tell.

But I have always been fascinated about the fate of the U-boat crews. Seems to me they were all doomed, sooner or later they would be hit by a depth charge - the more patrols they survived, the greater was the chance for not surviving the next one. Just like playing Russian roulette without spinning the cylinder between each pull of the trigger. I guess  Kretschmer would be KIA if he had not ben captured so early.

    • RE: WW II in Europe {day by day change in map}

Very interesting. To me it looks quite correct, it even got the Soviet liberation of northern Norway. I didn’t realize that the Soviet got that far into southern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria etc.) that early in the war. And the situation in Stalingrad must have looked hopeless in January 1943.

    • RE: Medal of Honor Films

Some years ago I saw a rather good series about recipients of the Victoria Cross. Each episode was a little less than half an hour, I think. It covered WWII, Korea and the Falklands. The episodes consisted of original filming, interview with the recipent (or his next to kind if KIA) about the citation, dramatic paintings and a female member of the royal chancery telling about VC and awards in general. Pretty good actually.

I’ve also seen a series dealing with Afro-American winners of the MoH. They got their medals only a few years ago, since it was hardly acceptable to award MoH to colored troops right after WWII. This series contained some dramatized scenes of the citation, just like a regular movie. It also showed some orignal filming of president Clinton awarding the MoH to the soldiers or their relatives.

I’m not negative to a new series about the citations of the MoH, but at the same time I also feel it has been done. I would prefer a series that focused on the Iron Cross, German Cross, Knight’s Cross or perhaps compared the actions that led to the highest award of different countries.

    • RE: Would You Purchase A Reprint of "Classic" Axis & Allies?

No. I already have a very nice and complete classic. Also I have Europe (1999), Pacific (2001), D-day and 1942 2nd edition. Now I’m waiting for the exchange rate for USD to be more favorable, so I can buy 1940 Europe and Pacific, both 2nd editions.

I know saying this is just like cursing in a church, but I feel well stocked having all those, and can’t see why I should want to buy a remake - or any more A&A games.

(Yeah, I know, I’ll probably regret and reverse this statement of me in a few years time  :-P)

    • RE: Remember your 1rst game?

      Great thread.

I saw the game the first in a toy store. And spent hours in the next few weeks just to stare at the box pictures and figueres. Eventually I bought the game in a book store, but was disappointed that the rules were only in English and the figures less detailed than on the pictures. I was probably around 15 years old and English is not my mother tounge.

Soon I played my first game with a friend. But I’d had the advantage of studying the rules, the game’s goals and map more than him, so it was not all that fair for him. We had hardly understood all the rules, especially I remember we struggled with the rules regulating submarines. We understood the Suez Canal, but in the start we believed an allied party had to control Gibraltar in order to let friendly vessels pass from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and vice versa. We had no idea what strategies we should use. No one dared to attack on the Eastern front, because of the vast number of forces we eventuelly put there. Most of the fighting took place in Africa and other places far away. We built and dispatched expeditionary forces that would conquer / liberate Brazil, Madegaskar, Australia etc over and over again. My buddy was the Axis powers, and at one point he had more troops in Africa than in Europe. In a moment of clear vision, I took a chance and invaded Germany. He was stunned and lacked enough forces to liberate Germany afterwards. Instead he decided to defend Japan to the last man, and bought only armor to ble placed in Japan for the rest of the game. Both of us were now hooked on A&A and he bought a game for himself next week. He defeated me some games later, and we have defeated each other over and over again after that.

Some of the best moments were when we had 4-5 players. Great atmosphere, loud cheararing, laughing… The Allied players sang “Rule Britannia” at the top of their lungs when the UK player was rolling dice in crucial battles. The Axis players knelt and prayed loudly to God, if He really existed He had to let Germany win World War II. Only for fun of course, and mighty fun it was!

      Many thanks for your reply.

Perhaps the investment in special chips for Axis & Allies proved to be too expensive, so they returned to the previous variants.

      Hello,

Are the chips in Europe and Pacific 1940, 2nd editions, compatible with the new type of chips in the 1942 2nd edition?
