"The Pacific" Miniseries
From what I’ve seen on the boards it seems like most of you guys have an interest in WW2 so I thought I’d mention the miniseries HBO is running called “The Pacific” starting on March 14. It’s done by the same team that did “Band of Brothers” and, from all the trailers and bits I’ve seen, the series looks like it will follow in the success of “Band of Brothers”. Check it out http://www.hbo.com/the-pacific/index.html. How perfect is the timing - after a few months of the game, we get a realistic look at the actual war.

Scramble Question
Scenario: Japan is attacking the transport off the coast of Hawaii on J1 with a bomber. Can the planes on Hawaii scramble even though Japan is not attacking with any naval units?

RE: Ok We Give Up
Maher,
While I personally haven’t played against a J1 attack (only J2), I wouldn’t change my general Allies strategy too much.
With America I’m getting destroyers and subs. When wartime kicks in, I get a few of everything: always 1 - 3 subs and destroyers, change up every other turn with a cruiser and battleship or cruiser and bomber. I also try to have a transport with every fleet group at Hawaii and Australia. This keeps Japan honest with Japan and mainland Asia defense. I use the convey belt strategy and see what opportunities present themselves with SZ 6, Iwo and Okinawa, the DEI, and the Philippines. With ANZAC I’m getting fighters for island defense or subs and destroyers to nip away at Japan, getting the NOs, and maybe snatch one of the DEI from Japan. With UK, make India a fortress (use ANZAC and US planes as well) so Japan has to keep cranking out infantry and tanks to capture it.
Thats a general outline. I hope it helps. Its hard to cover everything with this game because there are so many scenarios and little details. The bottom line is Japan can’t be everywhere, and if you build correctly with the Allies and make Japan always have to worry about 4 or so different problems, you can win. I say can because nothing is guaranteed when dice rolls determine the outcome!

Scrambling Question - What can the planes attack?
Hi everyone,
First of all, as my first post, I’d like to say I think this is a great site and a great resource for all A&A players. Its fitting that such a great game has an equally great online community.
Here is the situation: Japan has 25 subs, 1 destroyer, and 3 carriers (all loaded with fighters) and is attacking the Philippines (which is held by the US and is defended by 1 inf and 2 fighters) with 6 infantry. I have a fleet and bombers waiting to counter at the Carolines (15 destroyers, 5 subs, 1 cruiser, 2 battleships, and 7 bombers).
My question is in regards to how the fight at the Philippines plays out. The Japan player will first announce what planes he will commit to the fight on the ground, correct? Then I announce that I want to scramble, correct? When I do scramble, can the fighters only hit the surface ships, ie the destroyer or the carriers and not the subs?
I know this might seem kind of ticky-tack, but my thinking is if I scramble the 2 fighters and they can only hit the destroyer or the carrier, that would be huge in the ensuing counter attack (if Japan lost the destroyer, my subs would get surprise shots; if the carrier got hit, that would be 2 less fighters hitting at 4 or less I’d have to worry about).
Thank you for your help!
