had my first global game in a very long time this past week and Played as Germany (lost) at around turn 5 when Europe stagnated/Tokyo was on the eve of invasion and axis conceded. I never liked blaming a loss on bad luck but this time I really felt like the dice Gods had it out for me. after a fairly average battle for Paris which resulted in me keeping my stack of tanks, I forgot to implement taking the french treasury (we normally forget this step anyways and i was supposed to implement it this game) which was my first big hiccup. My first dice problem (and by far the worst in the game) was my assault on the Royal Navy. I followed my typical strategy of sending the Bismark, one sub, fighter and tac to sink the British BB, cruiser, and destroyer off of Scotland. two subs to sink the destroyer and TT off of ireland, and 2 (or 3, I forget) subs, fighter and tac to assault the main stack in the English channel. I also decided to press up the attack, as my unbeatable friend was playing UK, and send two bombers accompanied by all remaining fighters to hit London’s IC. attack off Scotland succeeded, but every other attack failed with no British losses. surprisingly enough we had never strategically bombed an IC and have the defender scramble intercept fighters, so it was much to my surprise when I found out all aircraft roll at a 1 but still saw my opponent rolling snake eyes every time and i kept getting five’s. this brings about my first question, given my units that i appropriated to sink Royal navy (in case of English channel I just send as much to draw scrambling fighters as much as actually trying to sink ships) did i not send enough? or did i just get screwed by the dice and the situation was nothing i could have prevented? and in the case of the SBR, is that a smart thing to do G1? and if i were to modify the values aircraft were given in the air battle prior to SBR what would you recommend changing it to because personally i hate rolling for 1’s. I did not allocate forces to take Normandy and instead sent them all to Paris, this coupled with my Naval/Air fiasco allowed Normandy to stay in the hands of the allies the entire game with Britain (U.S. went all in Japan and was absent from Europe) constantly shipping forces over to counter my constant raids from France (my tank stack that survived battle of Paris killed all but one fighter in Normandy G2 which is why the constant skirmishes developed). This was just the Western Front. In the south and East the Axis attempt was disappointing. G1 I took Finland, Yugo, and Bulgaria putting a minor IC in Romania moving all forces not allocated to west or Yugo onto the Russian border. My plan was against a medium skilled Russian player and involved a southern root to the Caucasus with 6 inf covering flank in Poland and Finland while keeping distance from Leningrad. However due to a surprise takeover of Tobruk and a weak Italian response I made a ill decision to build a factory in Yugo and start shipping inf to Libya. North Africa’s fate was sealed before i could send my Afrikacorps and cost me 29 IPC’s for the minor, transport, 2inf and art. this major setback in south and west meant my Eastern campaign could only do so much and my stack only made it to Western Ukraine through E.P. and Besserabia when the major Russian stack from Ukraine attacked and Soviets pulled it out with 1 tank remaining. The next round the Axis capitulated with Euro-Axis doomed on all fronts and Japan looking out at the U.S. fleet sitting triumphantly in the sea of japan. other than the questions i already asked as to what caused my downfall, how was my decision of Barbarossa strategy? Romanian/Yugo factory? I would love to know and would love just one win for global that didn’t involve my nemesis on my team

Lots of questions on Germany and UK

RE: Safest route/road to Moscow
I believe if Japan extends the majority of their navy past India that they are setting themselves up for an invasion. They will be 3 or more turns away from Japan. Ships and planes seem to get lost in the Indian ocean anyways ;)
that just made my day

RE: The Mediterranean Sea
slightly off topic, but if you want Germany to send an actual force to help in the med/Africa (aka land units in addition to air) do you think the best way is to take southern France G1, Yugo and then build a factory, or just building a force and shipping them around France to med the long way?

RE: Questions on my first Global 1940 game?
1. You say UK lost all of its territories in North Africa except for Alexandria, does this mean the Italians have Egypt and you used an Amphibious assault to take back Alexandria (or Italy did opposite to Egypt), or are you confusing Alexandria and Egypt?
2. I am by no means in expert on U.K. as I find it is one of my tougher powers to play (along with Japan) but i will try and help you out of your little jam
3. In terms of your take on how US, Russia, Germany, and Italy are doing it sounds very usual (including loss of France and UK navy) so don’t worry as the axis have not made any Game winning victories and you are still in very good shape
4. Take a deep breath, Allies are meant to be losing in the beginning and right now the UK is at its worst which is before US and Russia come on the scene
5. don’t worry about South Africa, If all Italy has to take it is the few inf and art from Ethiopia/somaliland to threaten it then it is not really that big of a threat and you should spend more in defense of Egypt then of SA. If Italy has captured Egypt then you have bigger problems then South Africa. In either case just buy 1 or 2 inf to defend if Italy is pushing SA, but your money can be much better spent in Britain and Egypt
6. Gibraltar is infinitely more important than French North Africa despite IPC difference because of Gibraltars ability to both bottle up the med and provide an invaluable staging point for allied naval assault in Med
7. Canada I find is not very useful except for transporting units already in Canada to defend Britain
8. Before you build any Navy whatsoever make sure the bulk of your IPC’s are going towards the defense of Britain. Once the threat of a sealion has passed (German Invasion of Britain) then you can start focusing more on Navy
9. Overall your best course of action should be buying a lot of inf in Britain with any leftover IPC going to the defense of Egypt which is by far the most important non capital UK territory. I would also recommend shipping most if not all of Canadian forces to Britain so you can spend more on defense of Egypt. Don’t make any major counterattacks until US and or Russia enter the fight (unless Italy is stupid and leaves one inf or something ridiculous to defend a territory next to a stack of your army). Hold out, help will arrive soon and then you can make your move
10. welcome to Axis and Allies and i hope you have an awesome time with it :) -
RE: No 1940 Third Edition Plans For Now
What is the next project that Larry is working on if not tweaking up games like global?
-
RE: I have lost russia turn 5 for the last 4 games in a row….
One thing i have never understood is the full retreat. I get that if you withdraw everything to Moscow or the other victory cities that you make it a lot harder for Germans to take, but if you dont leave a couple inf behind in a screen doesnt it just let Germans Blitz there faster and make the strategy less effective?
-
RE: Tec Rolls! What do you all shoot for?
I have only rolled for special dice once in my life and then decided it was stupid when i didnt get anything :p
with that said, my typical nemesis always buys special dice and i must say it sucks when it is used against you. The two that are always shot for is America going for heavy bombers which after it is achieved masses 8 bombers and eradicates Japanese fleet and home island. For Germany it is jet fighters, the reason being you use them as a defensive tool and you already start with a butt load of them so it is easy to defend in west while attacking in the east

RE: Alpha +3.0.beta project
trololol uncrustable…… i dont mind though considering everyone on this forum has got to have their own opinion of what to change in global… though it is a house rule… damnt why not just put it in both :p
-
RE: Alpha +3.0.beta project
1. Yes, replace 3 inf with ideally 2 mechs and 1 (maybe 2) tanks as to not Give Soviets to strong of a presence but still A. represent the armored presence that was kept there throughout the war due to border skirmishes B. Have a full retreat to Moscow start showing it’s benefits before round 7 :p
2. I think it is a bit weird to have ANZAC sitting in or off the coast of India. Personally i would say to have the ANZAC forces be in Egypt as it is within a couple of months after the game starting that they got there. However, if you were to have the forces not starting in Egypt I think the smartest thing to do would to have 2 inf and 1 artillery sitting in either a transport ship in the red sea or already landed in trans-Jordan
Keep up the good work Braccon :)
P.S. I have no idea how you would balance it and you would have to break the rules to do so, But what about an IC in amur?. when Germans were assaulting Moscow most of the Soviet Tanks were being made and shipped from the far east and the also had the important port city of Vladivostok there which could serve as a naval base. Again it probably would never work considering Amur is worth 1 and it might make Russians and Japanese at eachothers throats for Amur and Manchuria but it has always been an intriguing idea to me
-
RE: Alpha +3.0.beta project
three things
1. I think you typed in a different language when talking about the German NO of holding the Caucuses :p2. Why did you remove all ANZAC presence from North Africa?…. If anything ANZAC presence there needed to be buffed :p
3. for historical and Gameplay reasons I think you should give Russia 2 or 3 tanks/mechs in the far east bordering manchuria

RE: Italy in France??
Brits are going to back up France with RAF if France is still standing after G1, but no matter how many planes Britain sends France is going to fall. Now if Germany strafes France and leaves it to Italy then the Italians either lose a considerable number of forces or don’t take it at all and have to wait until I2. Either way this strategy is going to cost both sides much more money then if Germany takes it G1. The difference is that the Allies have the IPC advantage and can come back from losing its starting forces much more easily than the Axis can. Yes, this means Italy gets an extra 4 IPC and Germany can take out RN without UK scrambling and these are the definite pros to this strategy. But the fact of the matter is that this strategy means Italy is slow to take on Africa which is absolutely detrimental and even if Italy is making 4 extra IPC that is going to mean nothing If Britain takes the opportunity to destroy Italian North Africa. While subtle, Germany is also going to be able to make one less mech which might make all the difference when rushing Moscow. Germany is gonna suffer a loss of IPC for Italy which will not end up helping it’s ally much if at all. Seems like a loss for the Axis to me. I think it is a great idea for Germany to help Italy and while this was a cool plan to do that, it would be much easier and more practical if Germany took Yugo or southern France and pumped supplies to north Africa or just flew a few planes south to help it’s axis buddy. Anyways this is just my opinion and I stand to be proven wrong.

RE: Global 1940 is the best Axis & Allies game
1. Karl I love your pic of Marx with sunglasses xD
2. I love the idea of having these “objective” territories having to pave the way for an overall final objective, adds a nice historic value. However, I think it is going to be a pain in the ass trying to implement this with it to not upset the game balance and or make game not fun anymore. if you do It correctly though i think it could be sweet :)
P.S. considering a German sea invasion would require allied control of Denmark (and Norway?) for entrance into the Baltic, I think that if Germany can’t take back Denmark after a round then Germany is bound to lose anyways :P

RE: Global 1940 is the best Axis & Allies game
As Tall Paul said “to each his own” And for me the closer I can get to actually having something strategically equivalent to being the Commander of a nations might, the more fun I have. And I find that the larger the scale of board game the more I feel like Rommel, Zhukov, Montgomery, Patton, MacArthur, Yamamoto, etc, therefore the more fun I have. Yeah rounds take longer to get back to you, but that is a matter of patience. Not to mention you have much more to do when your round comes around and therefore more time to think. Gamerman if your not having fun then switch up your play style and/or play a more uncomfortable power then your used to, make challenges for yourself. If your still not feeling anything then I think you have worn this game out for yourself and should be playing AA50 instead of G40 as you have said so many good things about it. Who knows, maybe one day G40 will give you some appeal again

RE: Alpha +3.0.beta project
Also Subs are pretty easy to kill it is not like they can hide like in the real war
actually subs are perfect at hiding. If there is no destroyer in the area the sub cant even be attacked at all by anything (given of course that you were smart enough to opt to submerge your subs)

RE: Alpha +3.0.beta project
This is in response to both Italy changes and Atlantic UK changes
Italy: I like it historically, but balance wise i am scared. Italy is really the only minor power in the game that can grow into a great power (specifically by taking Egypt and border European nations) and I am scared taking away strat bomber and tanks will limit its ability to become a major power. But hey, i haven’t played Italy with this setup so i may just be crazy :p (and the extra subs will probably counteract this anyways)
Atlantic UK: Love it…. absolutely love it… maybe not the inf in normand-… nope… France is gonna fall anyways so another inf in Normandy wouldn’t really do much, so dare I say your changes are PERFECT… That UK NO is SSSOOOO needed to add on to the lame ass UK NO OOB and It made my day when i saw it in your changes…
Fantastic Job and I can’t wait to see more :)

RE: Global 1940 is the best Axis & Allies game
That sounds really awesome paul!..… I always imagined Germany starting with Panzer 3’s, then moving up to Panzer 4’s, then the panther and Tiger maybe even going to King Tiger (with Battleship stats)… If that really gets implemented I am sure there will be a lot of balancing issues to work out but I am up to the challenge :)… P.S. Have been checking out pieces you got from Allworknoclay for some time now and i can’t wait for more (especially excited to see what he does with French Inf) P.S.S. I am so nerdy I watch one of the why we fight movies to get pumped for an upcoming Axis and Allies game :p

RE: Alpha +3.0.beta project
First of all Global 1940 takes place immediately after Dunkirk. This means that Nearly all British and French armor is gone as they left it behind to the Germans in operation Dynamo to retreat to Britain. Speaking of operation Dynamo, the whole point of there being French troops in Britain is to represent the Thousands of French soldiers that retreated across the channel to Britain from Dunkirk. So the only thing you can really change for historical accuracy is taking out the fighter From UK, but even then there were plenty of Free French air crews that helped out in the battle of Britain after France fell. After Dunkirk, all British and French forces in northern France (and therefore Normandy-Bordeaux in global) were destroyed or retreated to Britain. This includes Infantry so a buffing of Normandy with infantry will give no more historical value to the game than extra tanks in France would (by the way French and British tanks were absolute crap compared to Germany’s Panzers). And if you remember the British actually attacked the French Mediterranean fleet after Paris fell because it was too strong to fall into German hands (the French actually had a number of Battleships in the Med) In global I find the starting position of France to not be in need of much change. With that being said, If your going to change French starting units in a way that would benefit historical accuracy (and possibly game balance) focus more on inf in France and Southern France. As I have said before, almost all of British and French tanks in Europe were completely wiped out as they were almost exclusively stationed with forces in the north for the main offense into low Countries which were destroyed when Germans Blitzed through the Ardennes cut them off in Dunkirk pocket. So to represent this I believe you should swap out the french tank for another infantry or artillery (same with British tank in France). As for southern France, French Military supplied a great number of divisions along alpine wall (Italy) and to a small degree facing Pyrenees mountains (Spain if it decided to join war with Axis)Which is in the global territory of southern France. While they were still outnumbered in the actual war, they weren’t nearly as depleted as they are in global. Considering the fact that it is worth 3 and more importantly is an NO to Italy, I think the 1 inf you were going to send to Normandy would be much better suited in Southern France considering the huge Italian (and German) force that can take it round 1. By no means do I believe that there are no changes that are needed to be made in the name of history regarding France or any power (Inf in FIC, diff China rules, stupidly long bomber range, etc.) And by no means am i saying your suggestions are ridiculous, in fact, I encourage for there to be historical changes to global and love to hear ideas like these. I challenge you to find me a way make Americas income more accurate (and fair). Or, if your hyped up about the French, try and make a simple rule to represent Vichy and Free french forces. I look forward to hearing your ideas Braccon :)

Evolution of units?

RE: What went wrong with Japan?
Thank you guys, i actually feel a lot better about myself in general :)…… You guys have been great with giving me answers to my questions and i got 2 more for you.
1. If i am planning to go all out on all fronts, how do I manage India and China while using as few resources as possible? China since it doesn’t have a capital seems like there is nothing to do except attempt to conquer every last territory (I did this my last game and ended up with leftover troops trying to attack the last Chinese territory which had a stack of 8 inf and a few artillery) But if i leave it mostly to itself than I have to constantly worry about art and inf strikes on all Japanese occupied Chinese territories without a capital to bottle it up. In terms of India I just get to making a French Indo-China IC and then start scratching my head. Even If i take Hong Kong and Borneo the Brits still have 10 IPC’s moving in one direction towards me from India and I don’t see how to take it without using my navy
2. We have had a house rule since our days playing the original axis and allies where there are no blockers for amphibious invasions. For example during an amphibious invasion of the Philippines, Japan would choose which forces he would want to take out US navy in that sea zone and then which forces he would use to accompany transports in the assault of phili. This would take place as two separate battles so one unit could not be used for both, However if the battle at sea ends in favor of the US, then the invasion does not take place and those units return to where they started (this was my disaster at phili because I devoted too many forces to the actual invasion and not to the sea battle So US navy held out and my invasion force had to retreat to Hong Kong). We established this out of a little bit of laziness but also because it represented the element of surprise that is eliminated when blockers are taken into account. After reeling from the realization that Japan would have survived if we had followed the rules, it makes me ask the question of whether this is a good house rule or if it breaks the game.
