1914 attack rules vs traditional A&A attack rules…think strategy

@Krieghund Thanks. I don’t play a lot of 1914 so some of the mine rules are pretty wonky for me. The bit about mines halting movement in particular is pretty important.

Where can the additional set be brought? At ebay.com did not find replacement set for Germany, UK & Austria-Hungary

I think I’ll point out one issue you may have missed:
If you move all of your units out of a territory you control, you still retain control of that territory until an enemy moves into and captures it. (A&A 1914 Rule Book, pg 15).

This means that you do not need to maintain infantry in every territory you control. Now you do have to keep infantry in territories where you otherwise have troops, An army in a territory must contain at least one infantry unit. (A&A 1914 Rule Book, pg 15). But if you pull everybody out, you don’t need to leave a trail of infantry behind.

I’m not saying that A&A '14 has all of the pieces it should have, but the piece shortage is exacerbated when you leave garrisons behind when you don’t need to.

The 17 hour game was Global 40. We played 1914 for 7 hours but it was never in doubt after about 4 hours or so.

There are fewer phases in this game.

Naval changes things up a little, and Air power adds in some twists, but in general that’s all there is.
You cannot retreat after combat (in the same turn) as there is no non-combat movement phase.  You have to wait until your next movement turn to retreat any of your land based units (including fighters).

All of these rules are very well spelled out in the book (minefields, movement, transports + planes, etc) though it MAY require 2 or more readings to understand how they all interact as not everything is laid out in a simple format.

That will be interesting. It seems like a Norway-Denmark NO-type rule would be good, except supposedly the game was said not to be complex enough for NO’s. Maybe to avoid confusion one of the German seaside territories will have a larger than expected income. I’m not sure if the Unrestricted Submarine Warfare phase will be for more than just Germany, but if it were, then the allies could take out the “convoy” between Scandinavia and Germany.

Hey Flashman, you are well informed and have good ideas BUT I can assure you that these thoughts will lead to complex rules which Larry would like to prevent especially for this initial release which is supposed to bring some numbers in!

I am curious how he avoids some of your described problems but we will see.

In an advanced game/collector’s editon whatsoever things might be different!
