    This is a nail biter.

    I couldn’t let this one go because I said to you the attack was ill-advised so I looked what I would have done and I came out with the following:
    Buy carrier, 2 fighters, airbase and 3 inf.
    Then you make a full stack of sz36 next ot FIC. You will have 9 air there and I have the odds of a US attack on below 20% in that case. Even with an ANZAC follow up Japan could hold the sz.
    You have your 3 transports ready there and you can bring the land units from the islands back, too.
    Certainly, I might take the islands from there but your fleet is the strong enough to push me back once you unify your fleets. Also, you have TTs to take back later.
    It is always better to hold on with Japan and resist from making risky attacks crippling Japans air force.

    Keep mind, it US loses its forces with an attack, not only the units at phillipines are gone but the 6 DD, sub and bomber at Caro, too.
    I would have never made this attack as it would not even be ill-advised, but silly.

    Interesting, thanks for running those numbers. Trading fleets absolutely works against Japan so even if I had diced you, it still may not have been very helpful for Japan.

    Major downside might have been not having a naval base on FIC. My northern fleet couldn’t have moved into SZ6, so either I’d need to buy that (I could have trimmed a fighter by flying one from SZ5), or converge on SZ19. Hmm.

    Yes. Sz 19 may have worked, too. As this would have allowed you to merge fleets, maybe the better choice. Harbour might have been an option to stay strategically flexible.

    I thought I’d take the 3% chance of retaking Southern France. I see what you’re doing there.     That is what I meant to post. Obviously pasted in a previous post with a stray click.

    Downside of holding on to Philippines J4 was that I would have had to abandon the 2TTs starting in SZ5. The 3ftr 1tac 2bomb you could hit it with was way too much for me to defend against. Still, better to defend the money islands in most cases. I guess that was why but my logic didn’t consider what the USN would do to me in later turns. Hmm, if I had have converged on SZ19 that may have been ok but conceding the Philippines is not great.

    Oh and thanks for the game.

    One other interesting point, is that in the other game where I declined to make the Yunnan attack, Japan became dominant around round 10. Maybe keeping the air alive is pretty important.
