Re: Imperial borders
With this game being released next year I was wondering if HBG would be doing pieces for each country. I would be very interested. Thanks
Do we have any Monopoly fans on this forum? My sons have started a love affair with the game. We play every weekend.
I have always loved money and counting, so Monopoly has always been a favourite of mine.
Unfortunately, I am an awful loser when it comes to Monopoly(not at all when it comes to A&A incidentally), so only rarely play.
Three Christmases ago we had a game at my wife’s parents’ house. I was drinking(of course) and made a complete arse of myself. I got annoyed as the 3 sisters schemed together and beat me when I was clearly ahead. I was robbed! They still talk about it. And ridicule me.
Hope your boys do not grow up into me Worsham.
Ah, good old Monopoly money: the venerable ancestor of the A&A IPC. It holds an honoured place in gaming history.
A few years ago, a newfangled special edition of Monopoly came out in which the paper money was replaced with (as I recall) Monopoly debit/credit cards and an electronic reader. Presumably this was meant to attract digital-era kids to the game, but I thought this was just not right. There’s something much more satisfying about having actual money in your hands (even if it’s fake) as opposed to swiping a plastic card. And it can be argued that counting paper bills teaches kids useful skills in arithmetic, which is a valuable bit of education.
Agreed. You know I am a technophobe, so you can imagine what I think of credit cards in Monopoly! That is ridiculous. Am glad to say I have never seen that version.
Monopoly is a game you learn counting and the value of things.
And the shame of bankruptcy and penury.
Here’s the game I mentioned, complete with Visa-branded Monopoly credit cards:

It was produced in several editions, including this London-themed one:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/35262/monopoly-here-now-electronic-banking-london-editi
“A modern Monopoly for modern people!
Now you can wheel and deal without the hassle of carrying loads of cash on you - especially if it’s in millions of pounds!
Things have moved on and, just like in the real world, all you need to do is swipe your bank card to transfer your money - it couldn’t be easier!
The places have also changed to reflect the real London of today that we all know and love - from Bishopsgate to Kensington Palace Gardens!”
The game is exactly the same as all the other versions of Monopoly, but has an electronic banking system and “Special Edition themed tokens”.
There is a WW2 monopoly BTW.

Thank you both.

I’m awful loser also. My oldest is a sore loser. Our latest game was my best game in ten fifteen years.
I just got annoyed because unlike me, none of the 3 sisters had a set of properties, so they decided to sell one to each other so they would. I thought that’s not going to help me win and could not see how it would help them. Thought they weren’t playing properly!
Anyway they learnt a lesson in bad sportmanship that night.
Every year since I have suggested we replay: I will not be cheated out of an obvious victory again.
Beaten by 3 girls!

Don’t feel too bad. There’s a military axiom which states that an attacker typically needs a three-to-one ratio to succeed when launching an offensive against a defended position.
Thanks Marc. Are you suggesting I find 8 male family members to join my side, then I too will win?
Not going to happen: they could throw their mother in and she has 4 sisters (most of their cousins are girls too).
The odds for us could get worse than Rorkes Drift!
Maybe I should take 1941 over this year.

No, I was simply making the point that there’s no dishonour in losing when you’re fighting against three to one odds. Except possibly in situations involving the Inverse Ninja Law, which states that ninja are weaker when they are in larger groups. (See the Wikipedia article on the Principle of Evil Marksmanship for further details.)
Of course there is dishonour in defeat.
I thank you for the Japanese reference, which has also highlighted two grammatical errors on my part.
I now have two reasons to say “I am more an antique Roman than a Dane”.
The best hotels on the map are maroon, orange, and red being the best.
IN the middle are blue and yellow for late game and light blue for early.
forget utilities and green.
I have a book that lays out the statistical values of landing on each property.
I got several types and games of Monoply. The Original, City, Card game etc., even on the consoles X-box and Wii.
To me it´s a strategic game where you have to figure out the best way with uncalculated circumstances and risks.
I learned to beat my opponent with any given or bring it at least to a hard win for Him/Her.
right now I try to beat the Wii game boom streets wich is a close monopoly game as well…

I remember those days. My sisters recently went through it too. Was probably the first adult game I learned how to play, so that was probably part of the obsession. Problem is at that age that no one wants to play with you.
Monopoly is one of the best games ever!
However, i wanted a version with oil derricks, not hotels.
A combination of both could be fun.
I always played with the $500 free parking and all fines go into free parking.

$500 is kind of a lot, no? We usually do $50. Sometimes we even play last property left goes to Free Parking, though if you land on it you can still buy it.
The fines ( say like income tax 10%) usually bring this fund to about $1500. Needless to say, players love going to jail. The rule should be while in jail you cant collect income from investments.
Since our kids are young and we need to keep the game around a three hour time frame we have started randomly dealing out the deeds of property at the begining of the game and keeping free parking empty. This has caused the game to run between 2 to 3 hours.
