Probably not. I dont see how anything is going to get better. You arent going to be able to get enough vcs anytime soon and US is just going to spread. Good news is UK didnt get much plunder b/c it already sacked berlin, but still losing 85 and the fleet is going to hurt.

Japan did have a bad start with failing to take Yunnan. I guess getting the SZ62 TT was nice though, probably not enough to compensate though.

I’ve always struggled with playing Japan. They really died this game. Perhaps the starting dice was a factor but I’m sure I could have played them better by a fair bit.

Thanks for the game. Looking to reduce my games at the moment. Just not enjoying it as much.

for one thing, you gave up Korea way too easily to the Russians. also, I think you should give up on j1 for a while, let it go in favor of a j2 or 3. j1 is harder to pull off when you don’t have the expertise yet.

But I used to do a J2 for quite a while, I just found it less good than a J1. One thing I think I should reconsider is the attack on the SZ37 BB. I can’t really see that it is worth it.

Regarding Korea, I’m guessing that you mean that it took me too long to dislodge the Russians. I can’t see that it would have been worth it to stack it up with a bunch of inf and perhaps planes.

J3 is great. Gives Japan time to setup, and Germany/Italy time to get situated. J1 for me is ugly just because I havent played against it much recently so I overreacted to some things.

For this game, I think you easily had the game won if you had played Japan better. As you continued to by ground units for Japan I got pretty confident that I wouldnt have any trouble. I had shut Japan down around J7 which is crazy. You had massive ground armies that effectively did nothing. I dont think its unreasonable for you to just decide to commit to buying at least half navy everyturn with Japan. I would do more than that. Japan has such an incredible airforce that even though US/Anzac can outspend Japan it takes them a long time to catch up. And since Japan just has to defend which is easier to do in a cost effective manner it can last a long time even with US spending 100% in the pac. Instead I was able to switch over to europe with pacific essentially shut down.

I dont think my europe play was particularly good this game but hard to say since I bailed on my plans to sack Berlin.

Also, you could have used your german/italian air much more effectively early game. I was able to make some important gains early on with minimal investment because most of your airforce was out of range (for example 6 or more air in cyprus).

And then you need to pay more attention to things. You got caught up by a few tricks that really doomed you. Probably a result of playing too many games, losing berlin was ugly, having no italians around to open denmark really screwed you in the end. THen there were things like letting your japanese fleet get killed by a naval base buy, not defending z113 adequately, and leaving units in vulnerable positions to get annihilated. Some of those worked out in your favor due to dicings but eventually it adds up.

Not trying to pile on, but I think in general the strategy is ok, you just need to do some little things to execute better (of course thats what A&A is all about).

yes a lot of good advice in here.

simon, I don’t think your problem is needing to take a break cuz you’re not enjoying it much. I think you need to take on fewer games, slow down your pace in a game, and really think about what you’re doing. and probably take on more competition closer to your level for a while, so as to rebuild your confidence. maybe tier 1 and lower end of E.

I’m interested in a slightly different opener as Japan, just not like what you’re suggesting. When I’ve done a J3 DOW I really haven’t liked it. I don’t think I really understand the merit in the J3 DOW unless Germany gets into the Med. Which doesn’t seem that great. J2 just weakens the J1 IMO although it does reduce the risk.

If you’re saying that I should build more navy and less army, the only way I can see that would work out is if you don’t put an IC on Kiangsu, Shantung or Manchuria. Otherwise, you need to defend the IC if China rushes after it, quite obviously. JDOW had a strategy that he’d build on FIC & Malaya and avoid building in China, perhaps for the same reasons. China was a massive pain in my bum in this game. So perhaps there is merit in these ideas but then not having that IC makes fighting China a lot more difficult. Certainly, Malaya is far more useful than Kiangsu if Japan is going after Australia.

One thing I’ve noticed in my games lately is that sometimes I’ve been failing to take Calcutta J5 for no particularly obvious reason. Perhaps this is just less focus on India allowing the stand there to be taken.
